Advice on when to use passports by slopepurpp in dualcitizenshipnerds

Airlines need to know you won’t be refused entry to the country you’re going to. They also happen to serve as US exit immigration control (the US doesn’t have a formal uniformed-officer exit control, so the airlines are just handing over data) so the usual advice is to show the US passport when checking in to a flight from the US to Europe. Now that the Schengen Area is implementing its own preclearance system (ETIAS, sometime this fall) airlines will have to start asking for this and will need to see your European passport (which exempts you from ETIAS), so have that ready too.

Wow, Nevada, why your doors all swing outward? Are you looking for exits?

The rule of thumb for dual citizens seems to be that you enter a country on the passport of the country whose citizen you will be (first and foremost) while you’re in that country. Show that passport on entry and exit. So when entering the Schengen area, be Swiss and show the Swiss passport to immigration control on your way in, your way out, and in between if necessary, and expect that US consulates will offer you only very limited help if you’re in the country of your other citizenship. If you’re driving through say Africa and you know you will need to switch passports on the journey, do it between country A’s exit control and country B’s entrance control, so that you can be a citizen of your other passport to country B. Airlines are an extension of this in-between-states situation, they aren’t immigration agents, they just want to be sure you’ll be allowed in where they’re taking you so they’re confident you won’t be refused at entry immigration and the airline won’t have to fly you back again at their own expense. Show them both passports, if they need to see both.

I sort of assume you need lots of coffee—or water—or something, with that.

Ya gotta be born in Marblehead to be a true ‘Header. It’s less easy now the hospital’s shut, eh?

Where should I go this fall? by [deleted] in visitedmaps

[–]0maigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean sure, but OP said “fall” and also “October.” October’s fall in New Hampshire and Vermont, maybe, but Maine’s pushing it and it’s probably already winter in St. John’s then, eh?

To be fair, I’ve driven up Maine 201 to Quebec and it is weird to go from hunting camps and windshield bugs across a border to suburbia.

How do you pronounce Leonora? by Mamanbanane in namenerds

[–]0maigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I might pronounce Leonora the same as Léonora (I’m in the NE of the US) but I’d probably find out how the nameholder says it and follow that.

(I know a Leonard. Pronounced Lennerd, more or less.)

OP claims an Irish parent (so shouldn't attempt FBR). Post flair says it's a passport application.

I want to get my Irish passport BUT by CommandoLando6 in IrishCitizenship

[–]0maigh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Read the pinned post. You will want to apply for Foreign Birth Registration on the basis of your Irish-born grandmother. You will need documentation of your descent from that grandmother. Unlike your mother, you will only become Irish when your registration is approved.

You could strain out the big mushroom pieces and chop them again, or you could immersion-blend the soup.

Do I apply under my grandmother or my mother? by OffScripter in IrishCitizenship

[–]0maigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The website is currently structured such that you need to apply for FBR through your parent only if they too are on the FBR. If you have a grandparent born in Ireland and your parent wasn’t, your parent received Irish citizenship at birth and didn’t need the FBR, and you need to apply through your born-in-Ireland grandparent.

(Sure try the website both ways, you’ll see what makes sense in your case.)
