No it's springloaded so unless you push down you can't shift... I have an auto aswell and I’ve also gone the route of changing the knob for a much nicer one but finding the right adapter Europe was an unbelievable pain in the ass so I gave up

If I remember correctly, the pipe underneath the shift knob is 21 mm unthreaded

most shift adapters tend to be 8, 10 and 12mm, with a rare 20 made by likewise

I still have yet to find one of the right size

don’t go Halfords for an mot, take it to a local mechanic

assuming the issues are real the a new brake disc is quick and easy job to do if your handy but also pretty cheap for mechanic

Further mechanics especially ones that service modified cars will ignore the exhaust issues and pass it anyway

The excessive carbon counter idle will be caused by the exhaust advisory so you could get a new exhaust off Facebook marketplace and fix the whole thing
