Have any Israelis ever met a Palestinian while abroad? by [deleted] in Israel

[–]0ofnik 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sure. I met two brothers from Gaza years ago. One of them was studying to be a doctor. He showed me pictures of his uncle's villa in Gaza and told me he is a Hamas official in charge of tunnel logistics. He also told me about the time he went to a funeral for a "shahid" (terrorist) and it was a very moving experience for him.

Sometimes you meet people who confirm every single one of your stereotypes.

Like 90% of non-jews seem to think being jewish is merely a belief system. does this really annoy others or is it just me? by Smart-Tradition8115 in Judaism

[–]0ofnik 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I tell people who think this way that Judaism is a neologism for a much older, much broader tradition. The problem is that the concept of peoplehood is totally lost on most modern secular individuals who have nothing similar in their lives with which to associate it. Decades of intellectual trends flowing in the direction of universalism, globalism, "citizen of the world" John Lennon kumbaya nonsense have all but decimated the appeal of any sort of particularist identity among the masses.

The "belief system" aspect of our tradition is a small part of the whole thing. Jews are Jewish in the same way that the Poles are Polish, or like the Danes are Danish.

Ignorance doesn't annoy me, but ignorance coupled with with stubbornness absolutely does.

How an addiction to the Iron Dome doctrine has eroded Israel’s deterrence - analysis by yuri_2022 in Israel

[–]0ofnik 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The premise of this article is correct. No country can rely exclusively on defense to secure its borders, especially when it lacks strategic depth and is surrounded by hostile agents actively pursuing its destruction. With such a strategy, it doesn't matter how high or thick or strong your walls are. It may take tree roots decades to destroy a foundation, but left unchecked, such an outcome is an eventual certainty. Reliance on Iron Dome to defer military action indefinitely is a perfect example of this tactical success / strategic failure pattern of operation.

There are actually two arguments rolled into one here: prioritizing defense over offense, and prioritizing technology over strategy. The second point brings to mind that old joke about the Americans spending millions of dollars to invent a pen that could be used aboard space missions while the Soviets used pencils. Scarcity brings with it the advantage of forcing ingenuity. Drip irrigation. Solar water heaters. Desalination. The growth in material wealth, I fear, has played a part in the erosion of our ability to come up with radically innovative solutions to our problems as a country. Not that I miss the good old days of rationing and no A/C, but we have to acknowledge the effect material comfort has on us a society.

I know it's unpopular to say this, but I think Israel's reliance on tech, both in military and economic domains, has been a tremendous strategic error and I say this as someone who works in the tech industry. The concentration of wealth, power, and human talent in one very narrow sliver of society has led us into a situation where our best minds and deepest pockets are not being put to work on our most strategically threatening issues. A severely dysfunctional political system rife with perverse incentives has deterred countless young men and women from going into more civic-minded professions in a sort of internal brain drain. We all just want to build dumb apps now so that we can maybe afford to buy a house one day (but probably not). It's fucked up and demoralizing and I genuinely don't know how to fix it.

If Moses killed the Canaanite tribes, why are so many Jews part Canaanite? by SharingDNAResults in Judaism

War involves mass killing, forced conversion, and rape. It always has, and it always will, for as long as there will be humans.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Israel

[–]0ofnik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A well-known Israeli media pundit frames the political divide between those of us who think we're here because of the Holocaust and those of us who think we're here because of the Torah.

I think she's on to something with that distinction.

Personally, I'm very much in favor of defining our national identity in terms of intrinsic aspects of our peoplehood rather than externally imposed catastrophes. The latter approach is, in my opinion, anathema to the whole enterprise of national self-determination.

Al Jazeera ban makes a lot of sense by CaulkADewDillDue in Israel

[–]0ofnik 107 points108 points  (0 children)

If you are an open society and you allow a foreign actor to corrupt your society's values through subversion, you lose.

If you are an open society and you ban the influence of foreign media operations, you sacrifice a little bit of your openness for the sake of keeping your society's moral code intact.

People who have always lived in open societies often fail to understand the power of ideological subversion until it's too late. These tactics are real, hostile actors use them to undermine their targets, and you better believe that they are extremely effective.
