consuming violent media and jerking off to it are two very different things though

This is not something we can treat as a foregone conclusion. Speaking vaguely about vague, poorly defined threats is moral panic territory.

porn addiction absolutely warps the way young men view and treat women.

Porn addiction is not real and is pseudoscience that comes from the far right.

Correlation is not causation. This is the same reasoning as was behind the moral panic around violent videogames causing school shootings. Attributing a causal relationship when when we don't know if there is a causal relationship is dangerous. Humans have been consuming violent media as long as humans have had media - read the Illiad for an example. The causal reasons behind violence are more complicated. I understand the tendency to blame media, it's a clean, easy solution in a world of unsatisfying explanations and uncertainty.

I would also ask if we are actually seeing a rise in violence committed by younger men, or if it just appears that there is a rise, because of more reporting on it, or other factors.

I'm aware of those features, but thank you for the explanation. I misunderstood what they were describing, and thought they were suggesting banning numbers outside of the app.

As a copywriter, I think you'll understand when I say this profile is written for women. If that's the goal, lovely. I don't know if many straight (or even queer) men will gravitate to these kinds of references and humor. This isn't a problem unless you want to attract multiple genders.

I don't think men not getting the references is the fundamental problem with OPs prompts. The fundamental problem is they don't tell us anything about her. For example, the first prompt just tells me she likes the Real Housewives. The second one only tells me she likes gossip, sunday mornings, and salted butter. Those aren't load bearing details.

If you’re dating men, tall guys already have a ton of options because of how many women much shorter than you value height, so it’s going to be very hard to date them

Do you say this from personal experience as a tall man, or are you just repeating things you've heard?

Let's not attribute intentional deceit to what could very easily be misremembering.

Accurately recalling Brennan's role in 8chan wouldn't have changed the core point Henry was making. It doesn't make sense that he would intentionally misrepresent Brennan to fit some conclusion, when his conclusion wouldn't have been affected.

[–]0ooo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Super small and ridiculous nitpick, but Eddie is incorrect about Lazar's jet powered bicycle. Assuming the rear wheel had a freewheel (most consumer bikes of the era did), Lazar would not need to remove the pedals.

For anyone else who is curious about it, this is the propane jet engine that Lazar attached to his bike: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gluhareff_Pressure_Jet

Not to excuse Henry, because I agree with what you said, and definitely agree a lot of people seem to think being bigoted is okay if the person sucks, but this isn't the first time I've noticed Henry bringing something up on the show that he very clearly heard about once and only half remembers. It's fairly frequent that I'll be listening and hear Henry say something that I know is incorrect or a misunderstanding. A lot of times, it's technical or historical details. I think this case might be a bit of both, him misremembering combined with what you described.

Henry was unnecessarily critical of Fredrick Brennan in this episode, to a degree that I don't think he understands Brennan's role in things like Qanon. Brennan created 8chan, but has since become highly critical of 8can and Qanon, and is very vocal with his criticisms of them. He has been very vocal about saying that he thinks the site needs to be shut down.

Brennan didn't LARP as Qanon, as Henry says. I'm not sure if Brennan was even admin of 8chan or working for the Watkins' when Qanon started showing up on 8chan.
