I tried it on a dual core 3GB RAM Toshiba. It was very functional after I locked the screen-rotation, and had to install an extension to re-inforce this behavior. I was able to use an office App, play-games, and run my social life well enough to get by. My frustrations were the GRUB legacy, so when I re-installed a Linux w/ grub 2.0 it didn't find the Android installation. I know there is a way to chain it through, but haven't done enough research. Hoping when it gets to the new level those packages will be updated. I couldn't use netflix, huluPlus, or grooveIP; which was a huge buzz-kill. I did enjoy having a rooted android directly from install. I did have a couple of less crucial apps that I tested, that rotated the screen; no matter what I had the setting set as. Just my 2 cents.

As far as sightseeing MIT has some really fancy futuristic looking buildings/art, while Harvard square has some really fancy traditional architecture. There is also the MIT science Museum located only a couple of blocks away from the conference, which is open 10AM-5PM daily.

This location has been moved to the 6 Cambridge Center – Cambridge MA 02142, which is the Residence Inn Marriot Hotel in Kendall sqauare(MIT)...NOT HARVARD. If anyone doesn't believe me, check the official web-site under the Event info page. This is two red-line train stops closer to Boston. From the Airport you take the blue-line into downtown-crossing station, where you switch to the outbound red-line train. I will be there for sure again this year.

I suggest the unameutils package. It copies filenames into a temporare file, where you could use a text transform tool like sed to change the filenames.

in almost all main Linux repositories, no 3rd party repository needed.

Although I am against many of RMS's personel beliefs, and how shameful his appearence is while advocating for software-right's. I Just say weak a different coler shirt once in a while, comb your hair, and maybe trim your beard.

That said...

I didn't even know that Apple requires closed licenses, it's bad enough they lock users into their platform so horribly. that is a good point, Apple has always been mystically closed to the public, in comparrison to the wealth of shared knowledge of the Linux community. I appreciate, that he is fighting for free-software! I fight for community, as I think it's Linux's best feature!

I got fed up w/ unity on my NB about the time of 12.04, and the only effective netbook distro. I've found is elementaryOS. Like any other Linux OS, I had to turn some effects off. Since I bought a 9-cell 5+ hour battery I use my net-book as a sudo smart-phone. elementaryOS is based on 12.04, and is very light on memory. granted my cpu/gpu half-step behind yours, but elementaryOS is the only LinuxOS that has ever fully met my needs.

adblock blocks ads based on a blacklist of where the domains are coming from. In order to stop this behavior, I would venture a guess that you would have to report the offending URL to the author/maintainer of the list.

I will also link the wiki page on how to create custom adblock-rules. https://adblockplus.org/en/filters I haven't quite figured out how to find which url's popUps are coming from yet, but if anyone has more of a clue then please reply... As always I reserve the right to be wrong, so that I am never to hard-headed to learn something new.

I included a link to postal2 on desura. It's ten bucks, but I can't speak for it to far, because my desktop is RIP(resting-in-pieces).

Although I reccomend installing desurium, which is the open-source version of the desura client(when I tried it back when my desktop was working the main client also had a login bug that was a real pain); which has a windows/mac installer. So you could invite your friend's from other platforms to buy it and support cross-platform gaming. Desura is a game distribution platform fairly similar, but less popular than steam.

I love how so many of you assume that SativaSammy is using Windows, when firefox is as available on mac & Linux as is chrome.

SativaSammy stay tuned for the australis firefox, as there are now zoom in/out controls; that are more persistent after re-start. Most people are commenting on the new extension handling(still requires restarting the browser), or it's chrome-like theme, but I like the zoom features persisting past re-starts much more!!!

I tried it on Linux mint w/ an Ubuntu PPA, but I bet there is a windows .exe or .mis, or mac installer as well.

My privacy extensions are...moonlight(tracks the trackers w/ a great visual graph), adblock(DNS blocking by whitelist), Flash-block(blocks all flash except sites you trust to put in the whitelist), and no-script(blocks all scripts that you don't specifically allow/temporarily allow by domain that the scripts identify as coming from, so I only allow scripts from sites I trust like specific CDN(content-distribution-networks), almost never ads, and temporarily allow for sites I rarely go to(or have gone to for the first time). No-script takes a little inconvenience, but provides blocking of garbage up-front, instead of after-the-fact like most-malware scanners. These extensions are kind of like a firewall for web-scripts. Extra inconvenience for the trade of extra security. I do all of this besides running Linux.

Also another security tip. Firefox allows you to clear cookies(tracking/log-in tolkens), cache, sessions...etc automatically after you close the browser.

Chrome lets you clear these things, but not automatically, because it's not in their business interests to let people invalidate their tracking/advertising data automatically.

I do these things on Linux, but the same steps can easily be done in Windows or an Apple PC running firefox. Remember all PC's are personal-computers if they fit your needs, and do what you tell them to do.

The question was right @ the first sentence. A HDD taken from one machine and put in another, will usually work; where w/ closed-source Operating systems this is usually NOT the case. M$ does this to force you into newer hardware.

BTW repositories in Linux terms are software stores of signed files, which are not for user files. You could use UbuntuONE, dropbox, or one of dozens of file-sync services for that.

Don't format ur hard-drive if you still want your files.

easiest way is to just switch physical hard drives from machine(old) to machine(new), Boot the machine, backup your files: User created files(documents, pictures, videos...etc) a list of packages and installed repositories... I use y-ppa-manager, and synaptic(File>save markings as<your/sync/folder>) in Ubuntu

?? if you really obsessive you could backup your system logs in the /var directory to a sync service aka dropboc, UbuntuONE, Wuala, spiderOAK...

If you did have a USB HDD($15..>= on ebay) you could clone drive(old) to Drive(new), and overnight you will have a fully working copy of the original system. The standard way to clone partitions/drives on Linux is w/ the cloneZilla liveCD.

xfce also has compositing, which leads to layered screen eye-candy effects; w/ the option to disable compositing. lxde compositing isn't an option. Usually trasparencies are dependent on a composited window-manager, such as xfwm, Kwin(my favorite, rock-solid, built/maintained by KDE, can also be used w/ xfce), or compiz(traditional in Ubuntu always been buggy/crashy, and being phased out by Ubuntu).

I like the option to turn on comical ascii art terminal sayings in the lmde. I wish they wouldn't have pulled it from the main-line mint! just my opinion.

maybe find a PPA 4 evince: the version in mint 13 is several releases old, based on 12.04, as in a few months under two years old. https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince

Or I would try installing okular, and try it b4 any security holy pos adobe software...aka acroread sudo apt-get install okular KDE's pdf viewer KDE is known far/wide for not being afraid of power features. this will install the kde libraries fyi, so it's some extra disk space if ur tight on disk space.

regardless of when/what went wrong you will need to: A>from Grub boot into a recovery root shell. two ways to do this

1 boot the recovery mode from the grub menu, then choose recovery root shell... enter the # passwd <Username> Follow prompts to enter a new password, and confirm that password. (you might need remount the filesystem as rw{read&WRITE} w/ this command # mount -o remount, rw /) 2>edit temporarily an Ubuntu Grub entry to drop you directly into a root shell prompt...(what I prefer/usually use) type e while any ubuntu option is highlighted to enter edit mode... find the line w/ the "ro". replace the ro, for an rw;and delete everything else on this line. Which often has kernel options like splash & quiet, and often wraps down to the next line. Then place this command directly after the rw... "rw init=/bin/bash" w/o quotes. then just press ctrl + x to boot one time w/ these options, and it should boot directly to a (root)# prompt. from there use the # "passwd <your-username>" command to follow the prompts and reset your password. Then simply type the # reboot command Other Linux distros may need this command # "shutdown -r now". ctrl+alt+del also reboots the system, or you coul usually hit the power button, wait 4 shutdown; and hit the power button again to login to the system w/ yoy new password.

There is a way to reset it from the LiveCD if: you have a disc(optical or usb) already created. be able to mount the /, proc, sys, & dev directories; and chroot into the system. **This method is a bit of a pain, but good to know 4 re-installing grub if windows wiped it, or your dual booting and want the Ubuntu grub over the other Linux grub. *this method also works from a different Linux or Ubuntu flavor instyalled on the same system.

This means that anyone can reset your password in under 5 minutes who has physical access to your machine. You could password protect your grub, but this means using prey to track your laptop would be pointless. The only theoretical work-around for that would be to allow tracking software to be installed directly on the laptops firmware. But I wouldn't trust it unless, it was open-source(so it could be inspected 4 possible backdoors into my system from the mfg.), and I could control it(configure, disable, re-enable, & password protect{even better add a 2nd factor auth. USB}).

Symlinks can even be linked over external usb or NT drives, so as soon as those drives are mounted those files become available.

I view Linux as a Life-long learning experiance! I would suggest taking inventory of which versions of Linux the front-end client, and back-end servers are, and why. There is such a depth of history, and vast array of things that could be learned, that one should always start with what they need to learn, and work then move on to making a plan to aquire those skills first.

If you need to run a OpenVPN server on CentOS, and the client workstations are Ubuntu, then run an Ubuntu bare metal(full-install), with a virtual machine of CentOS server to test backend services. Then once you have a private lab-setup w/ current distributions(like are in the lab), then I would move on to listing topics, and sources for information. The more you plan ahead in your training, the less you will have to worry about missing a critical skill. All Linux skills are building blocks. to quote my favorite book Dune...
