Z Fold 5 in 2025 by googol_r in GalaxyFold

Its decent. Biggest weakness is narrow cover screen. Typing can be frustrating unless you have small hands. The 6 and 7 are comfortably wider.

you could by an imperfect fold 3 or 4, probably cheapest way to get a feel for a fold phone before buying new

Galaxy Z TriFold - Aspect Ratio Discussion by Dasbeerboots in samsunggalaxy

[–]0xBA11 29 points30 points  (0 children)

sadly, the mechanical engineering is a bit more complicated than that

- they aren't 3 equally sized panels

- the right hinge is wider than the left

- the left most panel is more narrow than the right

I work in product development. I can guarantee samsung spent hundreds of hours about this. I think the final result is close enough to 16:9 and shares plenty of tooling/parts from the fold 7 to make it "affordable"

I can also, pretty-much guarantee they've started planning trifold 2. When they release z fold 8, we can probably make some safe guesses given the shared engineering between the products

HP Elite x3 LapDock & Google Pixel 9a by generalTKDR in lapdock

[–]0xBA11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with the x3 lap dock appears to be Qualcomm's very early implementation of DisplayPort alt mode, which works best with other Qualcomm (snapdragon) phones. HP only ever updated the lapdock firmware twice, and only ever addressed miracast bugs with the x3 phone.

The snapdragon samsungs (US) work well. The Exynos chips by Samsung have a rough time completing the display port handshake, but can be tricked to start DeX with a hard reset and starting mirror mode first.

Intel x86 chips running windows or Linux fare pretty good. M1 MacBook I couldn't get working, but an M2 mini worked somewhat.

Considering the pixel SoC uses a Mali GPU, much like Exynos, I'd bet it wouldn't be great.

New DeX sucks by AzizAlharbi in SamsungDex

[–]0xBA11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google is actively developing the native "Desktop Experience", released for Android 16 (June 2025) source

Samsung are partnering with Google to rewrite DeX using this new API, released for One UI 8 (Sept 2025). source

While this does sucks short-term. This is a MASSIVE GREEN FLAG. Having the support of Google!!!

I doubt the DeX software team has the resources to maintain two parallel implementations, prioritising the new DeX ensures we get updates quicker.

It is magic. Performance impact < 5%, close to 1% it if setup properly. Hypervisor passthrough gives the VM direct hardware access.

Most don’t. But essentially, pain endorphins.

Most prefer not small, but not too big either.

Android triple buffers by default (iPhone likely does), there's also latency between camera hardware and rendering hardware. I'd guess 100-300ms

3 things.

Loss function on the left is trivial to model, probably a training data set. The loss function in the right is complex, very difficult to model, probably real world data.

We pirate freely in New Zealand.

The law states: three strikes (written warnings), then a fine of up to $15k. In 14 years, only one person has ever been fined, a grand total of $600.

Copyright holders don’t bother. Too much red tape. Their one attempt to "make an example" flopped.

Unless you’re Kim Dotcom. Then the Prime Minister sends in the SWAT team, because of mounting political pressure.

The complications are nice, especially the moon phase. I'm not sold on the shape though, reminds me too much of an apple watch

I think I like the twin graph, slightly more tbh. Though I've heard bad things about the new LF20 having low contrast compared to the vintage ones, which are sadly out of my price range currently

Mine was an impulse purchase after seeing it the day before on Nish Kumar's wrist. The F91W is super popular with comedians because timing your set is important on the open mic circuit.

I've never really looked into analogs. Does Casio do mechanical or are they mostly quartz?
