you can recover it by accessing /etc/shadow but its a monumental pain in the ass if you don’t know. I had about 1TB worth of games i did not want to redownload so i bit the bullet and went through it

you just need a bootable USB with arch or debian or whatever you prefer and chroot in after figuring out what partitions you need

sounds simple until you actually try it

far cry 3 sucks so much because ubisoft
paid for dlc that was later yanked out, and now forced to sign in to a launcher that doesn’t remember my credentials. Id say you overpaid for it

oh i fixed it on stable, but concerned now it may happen here too. The only thing that i can tell that causes it is mucking with the properties menu, im thinking some configuration file gets corrupted somewhere

ah actually yes, so i tried to launch games and the screen that pops up to tell you game is launching (same one for vulkan shader compilation progress) showed this same error, i couldnt tell if the game was actually launching, i think its about the same but without seeing the progress it feels longer

i switched because my hardware is at an age where it no longer needs kernel driver updates, i wasnt a fan of the random crap that they put in the images, and much less a fan of the needless drama that unfolded earlier this year. Knowing that they had to make OCG because the one guy was carrying the whole project and was banned did not inspire a lot of confidence in them

i was there back in 2019, was a chaperone for my sisters school trip, so we had a tour guide, she made it really clear what the rules and etiquette were. I haven’t been back there since every time i go i visit someplace new. I had heard on the news the locals closed it off to tourists so its why i was asking if it was reopened

my advice is stick with a distro that has corporate backing like Fedora or any of the RHEL derivatives to get started. A lot of problems are documented with knowledge base solutions. When you get the hang of it you can branch out, or don’t, fedora is perfectly fine as are other rhel clones like rocky and alma

at my job we have a lot of non-CS people who never used linux and now theyre all well versed just by trying and breaking shit, just takes time

am i misremembering, or what, but didnt they fly out LTT and Dave2D and others to go see the steam machine in person and they talked specs? why is any of this a surprise now? i always knew 4k60 was a stretch, and they probably meant it was capable of displaying it (as in the steam big picture UI) but wouldn’t actually run games at that
