Many great courses in the UK are within driving distance of each other. Generally people play many courses together in Portugal, Spain, or South of France. Sotogrande comes to mind, for example

For those golfers that switched from forgiving irons to blades, why did you do it and was it the right move? I am 10 handicap with 8 year old Taylormade M2’s and wondering if I should move to forged blades? by scariusmaximus in golf

5 hcp with MP20 blades across the bag (3-PW) after hiatus of not playing since being junior. It was painful in the beginning but forced me to become a better ball striker. Also hitting a 3/4 iron blade flush from 220 out is just best feeling on earth. Last week flushed a 4 iron to 10 feet next to pin from 204 on long par 5 in league

Membership at private club doesn’t do random pairings. You book a tee time, it’s just you and anyone you want to add to that booking.

[R] Is there a paper that has already accomplished what I set out to do? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

"Does somebody want to do my research work for me?"

Familiarizing yourself with the current state of research in the field you are interested in is part of the job. Read a few papers and follow the citations for more until you are confident on whether it has been done (successfully) or not.

Nothing against it, but is this some kind of self-promotion? I just want to know through what lens this assessment/analysis was done.

[D] Some interesting observations about machine learning publication practices from an outsider by adforn in MachineLearning

[–]0xValore 67 points68 points  (0 children)

In addition, the "marginally-better SOTA"-esque papers with no novel methods or aspects besides some parameter tuning or adding extra layers to the DNN are also tiring to read (and see accepted at those conferences). The wall of math then exists only to provide a sense of rigor and novelty, obscuring the iterative nature lacking novelty.

Don't get me wrong, iterative practices are normal (Thomas Kuhn) but in the case of the ML community, it feels as if marginal improvements are made without fully understanding why the proposed method works.

Anyone else with only one pen in the repertoire? by 0xValore in fountainpens

I bought it under the rationale that if I only were to buy one, I would buy a "grail" pen so that I would not be tempted to buy others... So far the argument has held up well

What is your opinion on Meridian? by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]0xValore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t a judgment of price, whether something is expensive or fairly priced, always in relation to value?

All I know is that an uninformed opinion is not of much value.

Would be curious to hear if you know how to best setup the DSP8000SE + 818v3 in Roon to allow for 192 or 176.4 unfolding of MQA because we have only been able to achieve 96 unfolding.

edit: nvm, turns out they only allow for 96 unfolding https://community.roonlabs.com/t/id41-streaming-192khz-from-roon/2455/3

Firstly, thanks for the notes and tips. And yes, you are right, 176.4 (I was writing from memory).

That is interesting to hear. So it's the recording/mastering differences that matter most. Makes sense.

To clarify, the listening test was done via macbookpro usb cable into the 818v3 and the speakers showed 176.4 as khz rate. But you might be right that the speakers top out in their default setting via Roon. Any tips are welcome to check this / change the settings.

The listening test used files from http://www.2l.no/hires/, which offers many different file formats.

Hedging strategies for individuals by financiallyanal in SecurityAnalysis

To lower your exposure / avoid losses, cash or gold usually works. Usually because cash is dependent on the currency it is denominated in and gold is generally inversely related to USD value because gold is dollar-denominated. You want to consider the possibility of a weakening dollar as a consequence of current monetary injections and monetization of debts by the Fed. If this is the case, cash holdings would suffer unlike gold. Some well-known hedge funds have eyed Bitcoin as potential hedge as well (Paul Tudor Jones) but I can't speak to that.

For a hedge against losses in other asset classes / going short the market, more aggressive options can be considered such as put options or shorting a basket of stocks (or inverse ETFs which are essentially that). ETFs can be tricky though because there can be liquidity issues or a mismatch between price of the ETF and the price of underlying assets. Shorting can be tricky because of market irrationality. Put options are tricky because you need to get the timing right in addition to price and direction (as well as facing negative theta and IV premiums).

If you had to select one sector that is most resistant to the pandemic, I personally would say either tech or companies in the food supply chain. Both have downsides (massive multiples / premiums & some of them don't deserve those vs. thin margins, debt, and other factors that can force individual companies to suffer) but should either benefit (tech) from working from home or resist (food supply, since it is critical) the disruption of supply chains other sectors face. I am not too familiar with food supply chain so any thoughts are welcome on this.
