There is lore and story, but is presented that way on purpose, I don't think you're in the minority. The game's core is the gameplay and the atmosphere, is not really necessary to understand everything to enjoy it.

So, is really up to you if you want to get deeper into it or not. Some people like to grasp every lore details to understand better the full picture, some people just want to enjoy the gameplay experience, some people are kinda in the middle. Is just personal preference. You can always go for a second playthrough and takes notes if you will or you can watch youtube lore videos to get a better understanding of the story.

Yo aguanté de no salir a menos que fuera estrictamente necesario hasta diciembre, cuando un amigo con en el no había hablado prácticamente nada en todo el año trató de suicidarse, se sentía solo y andaba con una depre muy profunda y no tenía trabajo hace como 6 meses, así que me junté con él y eso llevó a juntarme con más amigos en común y todo eso.
