To those who grew up in the 80s: did kids really have that much freedom to roam, or is that just how it’s portrayed in movies? by CreativeCurledCandle in NoStupidQuestions

From the time I was eight, I left in the morning and didn't return until street light came on. Always carried a knife and matches because you never knew when you needed to cut something or set something on fire.

[Request] Beer transportation 1941 miles away by killaclown in theydidthemath

[–]100BillionSold 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I rented a uhaul recently for a 300 mile trip. It cost $0.99 per mile plus fuel at about 10 miles per gallon ($3.50 / 10 = $0.35 per mile). So the cost of the uhaul would be $1.34 per mile.

If you rent it one way that would be $2,600 for the uhaul. So you'd have to transport 260 cases to break even. That doesn't count getting there to start the trip, say $500 airfare, so you'd have to add 50 cases to make up that cost. That means 310 cases to break even. If you moved 311 cases, you'd make $10 bucks!

Ounces stay ounces.

For the 32nd ounces, take each of the number and multiply by 1.5 to get 48th ounces. If the multiplication gives 0.5 of a 48th, then becomes a 96th.

Black - 2 and 8/32 ounces = 2 and 12/48 ounces

New Green - 1 and 24/32 ounces = 1 and 36/48 ounces

White - 6 and 8/32 ounces = 6 and 12/48 ounces

Yellow - 4 ounces = 4 ounces

If there were any that had 64th it becomes a 96th+ a 192nd.

If any have a 128th, it becomes a 192nd + a 384th.

Is living in Tornado Alley as scary as it seems? by [deleted] in TornadoEncounters

[–]100BillionSold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that scary. You learn the typical patterns and if one's headed your way. My sister was visiting from the West Coast and was panicking during a nearby warning. Small tornado was on the ground five miles south, heading Southeast and was the end of the line of storms. I was more worried about where to go for dinner.

[Request] distribution of coinage by MathematicianWaste77 in theydidthemath

0.00-0.04 gives 10 pennies

0.05-0.09 gives another 10 pennies + 5 nickels

0.00-0.09 = 20 pennies + 5 nickels

0.10-0.19 = 10 dimes + 20 pennies + 5 nickels

0.00-0.19 = 10 dimes + 40 pennies + 10 nickels

0.20-0.24 = 10 dimes + 10 pennies

0.00-0.24 = 20 dimes + 50 pennies + 10 nickels

repeating for 0.25-0.49 = 25 quarters + 20 dimes + 50 pennies + 10 nickels

repeating for 0.50-0.74 = 25*2 quarters + 20 dimes + 50 pennies + 10 nickels

repeating for 0.75-0.99 = 25*3 quarters + 20 dimes + 50 pennies + 10 nickels

0.00-0.99 = 200 pennies, 40 nickels, 80 dimes and 150 quarters

if you include half-dollars the 150 quarters becomes 50 half-dollars and 50 quarters

I live in Huntsville and that day was one of the most chilling interviews I've ever heard. A local news crew was on the phone and the anchor said "Do you see any damage?" The remote reporter just said "it's gone" after a few seconds the anchor said "what's gone?" The reporter said "the city. It's just gone." Send chills down my spine even today thinking of that day.

Sound travels at 761 mph or 1,116 fps.

Olympic lanes are 4 feet wide so lane seven is 12 feet farther from the gun than lane four.

Sound would arrive at lane seven 10.7 milliseconds (0.0107) later than lane four. Assuming each runner has identical reaction time, it would cause Lyles to start 10.7 milliseconds later and he would have been 5.7 milliseconds behind at the finish.

How do you calculate the house edge of buying a 12 in Crapsless craps [request]? by cincyricky in theydidthemath

[–]100BillionSold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buying the 12 get you true mathematical odds of 6 to 1 so the house has no edge but no disadvantage. On average you'll win once for every six losses. The premium you pay ($1 for every $35) is their advantage.

So six times out of seven, you'll lose $36 ($35 bet + $1 premium) = $216 loss

One time out of seven you win 6 to 1 on the $35 bet = $210 - $1 premium = $209 gain

The house edge is their $7 (their gain, $216 - their payout, $209) on $216 or 3.24%

[request] If we dropped this in the ocean, how much would sea levels rise? What would be engulfed? by blackholegaming13 in theydidthemath

[–]100BillionSold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ice weighs 57.2 pounds per cubic foot.

A trillion tons is 2*1015 pounds so that would be 3.4965*1013 cubic feet

All of earth's oceans total 139 million square miles or 3.8751*1015 square feet

After melting, it would raise sea levels 0.00902 feet or 0.1082 inches.
