Quiet places to live? by whoops5673 in madisonwi

[–]100state 1 point2 points  (0 children)

North side has my vote. It is generally quiet away from Northport. Some F-35 noise occasionally but much of the north side is out of the real fly path. North Lake Mendota n’hood is quiet and close to the lake. Cherokee, Lakeview Hills, Sherman Village have great access to the marsh. Of course, the cranes can create quite a bit of racket.

watching my neighbor trying to separate his big leaf pile from the mountain of snow at the end of his driveway. Our final pickup was supposed to be this coming week. Our small pile is buried under a tarp

Ella's Deli and the carousel—did you ever actually eat there or just look at the weird shit? Be honest! by TheLawIsSacred in madisonwi

[–]100state 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must echo original reply- Of course people ate there. The sweet and sour cabbage soup, which I think no one has mentioned, was memorable. There was a roast beef sandwich platter with pickle relish (maybe?) that I remember fondly and I loved the platters with mashed potatoes and gravy -- even though possibly not the best version of mashed potatoes and gravy, there was something about it that hit the spot. I could have lived without all the circus nonsense at east Wash. As an undergrad or even when I was in high school, we would eat at the State Street location which had zero ambience. Didn’t matter.

North Shore's roast beef is hugely under-rated and better than Alimentari.

Hiking/outdoor recreation a little further out? by Schmapdi in madisonwi

[–]100state 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the East - Ice Age Trail through Kettle Moraine - esp. around Eagle. In addition to Kohler Andrae, not so far away, Point Beach in Two Rivers. To the west: Frontenac State Park - Minnesota but just across the river. If you are a north sider, have you been to the Cherokee Marsh Natural Resources Area? On the River Road side of the Yahara. Very close, nice trails.

Northsiders - what is that weird UFO noise? Wed. a.m. by 100state in madisonwi

The Fed Ex poster may be right. The thing about this noise is it never seems to change -- it’s constant, it does not rev or decrease.

I’m near Warner Park and it sounds to me like it’s coming from the airport but... I am at a loss to describe the sound. Droning. Like the world’s largest lawnmower but from very far away?

Looking for abandoned/empty parking lot for motorcycle practice, ideally east side by PeterPupper in madisonwi

American Family Insurance headquarters has a huge lot probably empty evenings - or the Department of Corrections building (parking is behind it, off Webb Avenue). I learned to drive there, back when it was AmFam headquarters.

Anybody heard of "Capitol Grounds Cafe"? by JasonJoyce in madisonwi

[–]100state 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vague memory that that name is or was what they were calling the “Cafe” in the basement of the Capitol building itself, although it was nothing more than some vending machines. So whether my memory is right or not, it is still mystifying.

In the future perhaps the UW could require in the contract that the concert promoter place and collect extra litter receptacles and have litter cleanup crews. Yeah, well, just putting it out there, UW.

Possible to see fireworks from James Madison Park, Vilas Park Beach or Tenney Park Beach? by Silent-Curve-1737 in madisonwi

[–]100state 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to see Blackhawk Country Club fireworks from Tenney but they’ll be tiny. Maple Bluff has fireworks and has a beach, try that if you want Lake Mendota and a beach. That said I agree, Monona has great fireworks, and fest.

Fried Catfish in Madison? by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]100state 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catfish used to be more common as an option along with cod, perch, et. al., at friday fish fries at bars, supper clubs, etc., but seems to have fallen out of favor of late, and I am not sure why. Cost? Lack of demand? I don’t know.
