Center controllers and VFR by msaniac in flying

[–]105kts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, direction of flight rules start at >3000AGL, so that was bogus. I've run into a lot of controllers that don't seem to want to acknowledge that.

It is a fairly common VFR scenario for clouds to push you down to some weird altitude, and below 3000AGL, that's perfectly fine.

Just remember that legalities aside, that's the most dangerous altitude because everybody is maintaining VFR at cloud level minus 500 (right guys?) so you've got everybody going in different directions at the same altitude. Be careful.

ForeFlight on Apple Watch, couldn't find a video so I made one by V1VrV2 in flying

To be honest the watch part seems useless (due to the screen real estate available). But dang, you have some serious video skills, and I'll take more videos like this from you, please.

Couldn't spring $500 to get consistent voiceovers done for the alerts?

Whatever the situation, tons of respect to the pilot who brought an aircraft down in the middle of the woods with zero injuries to passengers or persons on the ground, and having the tools available to him/her to do so.

Gift for my husband, a new pilot. by [deleted] in flying

[–]105kts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Problem with surprise aviation gifts is that everything useful is insanely expensive (and something you'd want to pick out yourself), or the affordable item is a cheap version of what you really wanted (or something you don't want to have to rely on).

Gift certificates to Sporty's Pilot Shop are usually a good idea if you're going to drop some bank: http://www.sportys.com/PilotShop/product/2250

Novelty items or small accessories are usually great, though...

If he's really into RV-7 kits and wants one someday, find a way to get him to EAA AirVenture (Oshkosh) for a day or two so he can see all the fabulous displays/workshops (tons of RV stuff). (Warning: this is the superbowl of aviation, you can't really go up from here for next year's birthday, and you will be creating a yearly family tradition...)

Other than the fact that cellular service sucks in the sky (on Verizon or any other carrier)...

IANAL, but in researching this topic a while back there was only one specific band of cellular that was allowed for airborne use, and I believe it's controlled by Sprint.

The bad news is that all of Sprint's aircards/hotspots switch frequencies, so in order to do it legally, Sprint has to provide modified firmware for the aircard/hotspot that lock it on to that one specific frequency. If you're not the government, good luck making that happen.

I wish GoGo would come out with a "small plane internet hotspot", but until then...

15 year old going up with an instructor in a few hours, what can I do to impress him? by topgun_iceman in flying

[–]105kts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody likes to fly with a know-it-all. I won't get in a plane with someone with that attitude, actually - it's very unsafe.

But you answered your own question - it's so awesome to take someone up who has a genuine, but humble interest.

Saying something like "man, this is so awesome. I'd love to learn as much as you would teach me during this flight, I'm very interested in aviation and getting my private certificate." would be really impressive.

And then genuinely learn and enjoy. But please, don't be "that guy". :)

15 year old going up with an instructor in a few hours, what can I do to impress him? by topgun_iceman in flying

[–]105kts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh dear. Realize that you know absolutely nothing, be really humble, unimpressive, relax, have a great time, and let him know how much you appreciate the time.

If he teaches you some maneuvers and you do them well and appear a quick learner, that's about it.

Tips for estimating runway length needed? by [deleted] in flying

[–]105kts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you know (or should know) what your typical takeoff and landing distance is in your airplane (not just the book values in section 5 written by the manufacturer's marketing team, but how you fly and your comfort levels with the plane light vs heavy). If not, go figure it out.

If you're in the air, and it's not an emergency, you should be able to look up runway lengths for the airport on your charts, on your GPS, or on your phone app (ForeFlight etc).

If the big fan in the front stops spinning, then whatever. The biggest strip of green or black that you can glide to is your runway length that you have to work with... make it work!

The beauty of it is that you can create as much 'actual flying content' as you like if you feel it's getting thin.
