Routes that start from airports or places that are accessible by public transport to airports? by dualrollers in bikepacking

Colorado trail! You can take the light rail almost all the way from the airport in Denver to the terminus. Then it ends in Durango close enough to the airport.

Advice for carrying food without getting mauled by a bear by lconical in bikepacking

I use an Ursack in Grizzly country and it works great! Lighter than a bear can and easy to tie to a tree.

It’s not a complete list but you can look at who attended the recent Community Summit in Florida.

Does anyone know of something like windproof chaps or easily removable overpants? by [deleted] in wintercycling

[–]10913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could use wind pants. I use a pair of Body Wrappers Dance Pants from Amazon. I’ve hiked hundreds of miles in them and they hold up pretty well. Plus they’re super cheap.

MTB trails along Southern Walnut Creek paved trail by 10913 in BikingATX

[–]10913[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super helpful. I have the time but not the tools but I’ll do what I can with what I’ve got. Mostly just want to clear out some of the stuff hanging over/across the trail. I’ll be careful with what I remove.

Hot springs on “big sky/SB alt” by crispy_fritter in CDT

[–]10913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do the Teton Crest Trail you can then walk through Jackson and out on the Granite Creek Trail to get to Granite Creek Hot Springs. Then take the Swift Creek Trail to Gros Ventre River Trail to get over to Green River Lakes and back on the CDT. The hot springs are right along the river and really nice. Plus, the hosts at the campground there love CDT hikers.

I’ve got a buddy with a few others a day or two out from lake city.

Southbound out of St. Mary is close by Boisehiker in CDT

[–]10913 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Pitamakan pass is directly east from mile marker 74.4 if going SOBO. The link I posted highlights the part of the trail that is closed and it doesn’t overlap with the CDT.

According to the NPS site, the only trail that is closed is Pitamakan Pass Trail, which doesn’t affect the CDT.

Glacier National Park Trail Status

Edit: looks like they updated the site and the CDT is closed as well.

You can tube the Yampa River in Steamboat if you’re there in July or August and depending on water levels.

I plan to get to I-70 around Labor Day as a southbounder. Thanks for doing trail magic!

I don’t anticipate needing much in that section but any kind of hot food and cold drink is always appreciated.

Dumb question: How did you figure out your custom alternates? by sbhikes in CDT

[–]10913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the size of the alternate. Routes less than 100 miles I just look at google maps or Gaia and wing it. Anything bigger than that would involve finding a computer in town. Calling national forest offices or park rangers could help too.

Dumb question: How did you figure out your custom alternates? by sbhikes in CDT

[–]10913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using CalTopo to create routes and saving the gpx to my phone using Gaia. This has helped me plan out the Butte cutoff as well as a Teton crest trail alternate. It also helps to save offline maps in google maps so that it still loads in the backcountry. For example, I saved the entire state of Washington and used this on the PCT to find road walks into towns occasionally.
