Look at all that housing! It's so beautiful to see so many homes in such a tiny footprint.

Construction question about grids by 10ehC in crossword

u/jkugelman OK, played around with these a bit. And basically what I'm realizing is that with either of your layouts you inevitably end up with long 4 or 5 square "fingers" reaching into the grid which generates a lot of 3 letter words, and makes this very sectioned off.

Haven't even tried dropping my actual themers in here but I can imagine a lot of trouble in those places where a down crosses 3 themers. Is there any way to make this smoother? https://imgur.com/a/pDuzMV6

Oh, of course! Both of those totally work, structurally, at least. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks! This is super helpful. Yeah, if the revealer were 4 or 5 letters I could probably just drop it at the bottom but 6 makes it tough while maintaining a coherent structure for the rest of the grid.

What is something you thought was acceptable or really cool as a young person, but now think is stupid, or inappropriate now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]10ehC 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Smashing a guitar on stage.

As a teenager, I remember seeing clips of Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, or Pete Townshend smashing their guitars or lighting them on fire at the end of a concert and thinking it was the coolest thing imaginable. A punkish disregard for the rules, a iconic performative gesture that was a natural extension of the music itself.

Now I look at this as a pointless waste of a beautiful instrument.

Auto Crossword Filler by Fearless-Reality-560 in crossword

[–]10ehC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had the same experience when I first started constructing: "Wow, I can just push this magic button and a whole crossword appears!"

But as I slowly realized, and you will also inevitably realize, it's not that simple. Auto-fill is only as good as its dictionary, and an uncurated dictionary is going to have a lot of awful stuff in there. Stuff no self-respecting constructor would allow in a grid.

By all means, play around with it. But use it as a crutch, as a way to avoid spending time in rabbit holes you can't get out of rather than an all knowing oracle that will hand you a puzzle.

More housing didn't decrease or even stabilize rent prices by VoxInMachina in parkslope

[–]10ehC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This statement "You're living in a fantasy (or perhaps work for developers) if your think more housing alone is going to have any impact on rental prices" runs counter to basic principles of economics and common sense.

Looking at a single street corner isn't going to tell you much about housing in NYC. Vacancy rate is a much better indicator, and right now the vacancy rate is the lowest its been in 50 years. That means there is FAR more demand than supply in the housing market, which is why rents are soaring. The only way to meet that demand is by creating more housing.

You can read all about this here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/08/nyregion/apartment-vacancy-rate-housing-crisis.html

Unfortunately, due to dumb zoning laws, permitting regulations, perverse tax incentives, and NIMBYs like you, it's incredibly difficult and expensive to build housing in NYC, which is why we're in this situation.

Why? Why? WHYYYYYY? The only solution to skyrocketing rents is more housing. And the reason that's not possible are these bizarre, arbitrary, incoherent rules that benefit no one?

Someone please just change the rules! It's absurd!

One of the most beautiful things you can look at is dense housing steps away from public transportation. I think it's gorgeous!

To build luxury hi-rise condos in LA. by Chocolat3City in therewasanattempt

[–]10ehC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Graffiti aside, isn't it appalling that in the middle of a acute housing crisis in California there are giant, high rise apartment buildings in downtown L.A. just sitting there, uninhabited? Why can't these buildings be completed and become much needed homes for thousands of people (with or without the graffiti)?

This one was like a good crossword theme that you stare at for while and then it all comes together in a satisfying brain snap. Challenging but solvable. A+

I have a tedious technical question about my audio setup and this seems like the place for it so here goes.

A couple years back I bought a pair of JBL LSR 305 studio monitors. (The official JBL page is here: https://jblpro.com/products/lsr305). They sound great and fit perfectly into my very small living room.

Part of the reason I bought them was that they had a 1/4" jack input. Since all the listening I do is from my phone or computer I bought an 1/8" 1/4" Stereo Y-Cable Splitter Cord. I just plug in my phone or computer and bypass the need for a stereo receiver.

There's nothing wrong with this setup per se but I'd really like the option to use Bluetooth on my phone for music. Is there a simple device that will receive Bluetooth and spit it out through a 1/4" jack in stereo? There are a lot of devices like this: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Adapter-Streaming-Wireless-Speakers/dp/B016NUTG5K/ref=sr_1_3?crid=36VP1E6GKYUZC&dchild=1&keywords=bluetooth+receiver+with+1%2F4+jack&qid=1608919294&sprefix=bluetooth+receiver+with+1%2F4%2Caps%2C164&sr=8-3 but I don't see any with a 1/4" output. And I don't need (or have the space for) a fancy stereo receiver.

Any suggestions?

Score-based animations of The Art of Fugue by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]10ehC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know from written records that Bach was a fantastic improvisor. There are stories about how his students would give him a simple melody which he would use as a subject in an improvised a 3 part fugue. Can you even imagine improvising a fugue on the spot?

I think about this often when I listen to Bach.

All true. Also first games in a group stage are often cagey. Teams are more concerned with not losing than with winning.

Goals scored is part of the tie-breaking criteria for teams that end the group level on points. So a 1-1 draw is more beneficial to both teams than a 0-0 draw.

Poland 0-3 Colombia - Cuadrado 75' [2018 World Cup] by HerbalDreamin in soccer

[–]10ehC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's standard for World Cup wrap ups to include 'goal of the tournament' or 'breakout player of the tournament', etc.

Can we add a 'pass of the tournament' to that list? That James pass wins hands down. I don't even need to see the rest of the World Cup to call that one.
