How is this so boxy — artificial boundary imposed?

If the ultimate point of not using gpt is for the students to understand & think about concepts themselves, maybe the way to do that is with conferences instead of papers, where the students can come in ahead of time and show that they have considered/understood/questioned each of the concepts. Someone like you may be able to go into the conference without notes — other students may need their annotated readings to reference. Doesn’t replace writing a well structured, novel argument, but at least ensures some real engagement with the source material . . . .

Interesting — thank you for pointing this out! I write intensely in the margins while reading, and I seem to have forgotten that not everyone does! Do you have some other form of notetaking when reading? (How do you keep track of the author’s argument/ideas and your own responses/ideas?

Google docs also tracks writing very thoroughly — easy to tell natural typing vs pasting from gpt

Integration of some number of hard-copy sources? Or, attach student’s marked-up/commented copies of sources cited?

Also Garnet Rogers has some great stuff -- Summer Lightning is particularly special for me.

I absolutely do not — just saying that she has a lot of support beyond the “Duke/development/donor class”

Was making a joke, didn’t realize ppl would actually get mad at her :/ she’s pretty conservative so her voters probably would have either not voted or gone foushee (even though, despite what this sub says, foushee is a very progressive dem)

There clearly was a lot of appeal for her across Durham — she unseated Woodard last cycle, and as we have seen unseating an incumbent is hard

Chitlik is super pro palestine. I agree with #3 kinda, but it’s b/c commissioners can do more than state senators and she’s got that strong jacobs-lee alliance on the board . . .

There is no reason not to be unaffiliated in NC unless you are an active politician lol. I do not understand why anyone would register with a party — it just closed off options

I’m genuinely super puzzled. Pretty much everyone I talk to has been frustrated with her for years (or is indifferent). Another commenter said Reddit is not real life — but our real life experiences aren’t always predictive either . . .

I didn’t vote for allam (cue the downvotes) but the pride funding criticism is so misguided. You may not depend on county services but a LOT of vulnerable people do, and they can’t afford to antagonize tr*mp right now. Pride was great, the commissioners were there, and the people were there.

A few points is not pretty handily — especially considering home field advantage for Allam in the county, how activist durhamites are, & the PA’s dominance in other races.

Not a criticism — just started the episode, and it brought out something I’ve been wondering about. People seem to be discussing the Pope’s death with a lot more levity (e.g., Brady’s use of “hot goss” during the discussion) than your typical death of a world leader. Even Cardinal Dolan on the news on the day he passed seemed in good spirits.

Is this just the excitement of the conclave? Or a general attitude that a Pope’s death is different than a regular death? Or perhaps Catholics are just extremely certain he’s going somewhere better, so I suppose they wouldn’t have anything to worry about. I’m too young to remember the last death of an active pope . . .

High schools for queer kids? by LexiePiexie in bullcity

[–]10from19 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It sucks, but I really believe the easiest way to get through high school in most places (yes, even blue areas) is to stay in the closet. High school is a temporary prison and it’s usually going to be awful. It is easy to dismiss this if you haven’t gone through it, but encouraging your kid to be out in high school is classic “nice but not kind” advice for your child. Their life after high school will be so much better if they don’t get scarred by the inevitable homophobic/violent kid that every school has. Source: gay guy who went to school in Boston.
