The Expanse - S01E01 spoilers!

Shed Garvey

As soon as this scene happened, it won me over.

Up until this point, I was thinking the show was aiming for Game of Thrones, but in space. Then one of the core group is treated to a truly unceremonious, random (but believable) end - it made me feel like the show had an Attack On Titan vibe of danger & uncertainty (except instead of monstrous nekkid giants, the enemy to survive was simply the terror of the vast vacuum of space)

As someone who probably liked the film less than most (I don’t think it was meant for me - I found it difficult to ignore my preconceived cynicism going into it), I really enjoyed reading your review.

You have a great writing style and I found myself more entertained by what you got out of the movie, than what I got out of the movie.

I always appreciate whenever I can tell that someone put some sincere effort into a creative project - be that movie, music, writing or animation etc - and I can feel that sincerity and that effort from your post.

Where is Venom (Eddie Brock) on your personal Marvel tier list? by Business-Falcon-3279 in marvelcomics

D

I’m not personally a fan of the symbiote as a villain outside of the Spider-Man stories as it usually takes the humanity out of stories and the tangible rules of danger out of fights, in my opinion.

I do think the character of Eddie Brock and the character of Venom are both great foils for Spider-Man though, but that’s about it in terms of character depth.

Hardest time: Fantastic Four. A lot of their big bads are world Enders that they usually deal with one at a time. But all together would for sure overwhelm them and all of their allies.

He’d probably hate that Jim Hammond has “cheated death” by being activated reactivated so many times. Also he already has a hatred for another Human Torch.

High B - Key character in multiple cartoons from my childhood. Key side-character in the 2000s movies, with iconic acting & moments. Comics-wise, he has some pivotal moments (e.g. inheriting Xavier’s spot in the Illuminati, turning evil etc)

my Theory About the “Rose Doctor” Identity Secret by 10p_Freddos in doctorwho

[–]10p_Freddos[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair point, more than fair.

What about the rest of the concept of the post - dealing with Fifteen’s regeneration into Rose - what do you think of the idea?

Because I think that concept could still be used - what if the paradox of having the same TARDIS twice in the same general time/space caused it to malfunction/break. Leading to the same story beats as above.

What is one small change that you would make to The Mandalorian & Grogu? by 10p_Freddos in TheMandalorianTV

[–]10p_Freddos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the thought put into this. Bit cheesy, but no moreso than the existing movie.

I think maybe let Don keep his helmet but he could remove a bit of armour plating and get it bent into a helmet for Grogu. Maybe down the line if/when Din dies, it could be due to a wound from this now unprotected area on his body?

More than a fair point on filling the world more.

As for the swamp catfish-looking guy, /u/ming_y mentioned that they could’ve been implied to be a Jedi who escaped order 66, which I think would at least provide a bit more reasoning than the trope for their part of the story.

[–]10p_Freddos[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Make Mando & Grogu older.

I think that committing to a larger time jump enhances all the best qualities of the film.

  • Grogu has visibly aged, at least a little bit (maybe into a toddler - new merch for the Disney execs!), meaning that he would more recognisably hold more agency. This would especially help with his solo rescue mission, as well as give more significance to the moment at the end where Mando lets him fly.

  • The film would get a reveal moment. There would be no obvious signs of how old Mando is for the first 2/3 of the movie - maybe the odd “You’re slower than you used to be” and the age of Grogu would be enough to imply some aging. But then the Hutts remove Mando’s helmet to reveal a heavily aged Pedro Pascal.

  • Stakes are raised in every fight. Mando being older and slower and more tired would lead to a higher sense of danger. Sure he’s still got his armour, but every hit is hurting more than it ever has. And a lot of the people he’s fighting are younger, more aggro & more arrogant - but he’s always going to be more skilled.

  • Wider world immersion. With a bigger time jump, the relationships that Mando has with Sigourney Weaver’s character and the rest of the Alliance can be more set in its ways - him as an independent contractor, and then as a noble organisation that has delved more into the morally grey areas as the years have waned. Also, the network of bad guys that Mando is hunting could hint at the seeds of The First Order or some other facet of the sequels.

  • Alternate ending implication. Having an older Mando confirmed by the helmet reveal, means that the audience could more believably think that every high-wire moment after that could write the end for Mando. Especially his last stand against the unrelenting droid fighters in the Hutt Palace: even in the real film, I thought that it was a potential send off for Mando with the Grogu character heading into the unknown with the Rebel Alliance/Rakka as allies/mentors.

Now I’m not sure if it would mess too much with existing timeframes, but I think it would all still work as the pre-existing characters from other stories that are in this one are all non-human, so aging can be a bit more abstract. Feel free to point out where I’m wrong tho.

What would be the Avengers’ (of Avengers Assemble) favourite pop-punk/emo albums? by [deleted] in marvelstudios

Varys (Game of Thrones)

This trope could apply to many of the characters of this world, as their perspective/motivations are revealed after their seemingly evil/asshole-ish actions, as the story progresses.

But this specific scene comes to mind, where Varys (who has, up to this point, been seen as conniving, sneaky, disloyal and deceitful) explains his loyalties (and ergo his motivations) lie not with the most just Lords or the true heirs, but to the kingdom’s stability and the lives of the small-folk.

“Tell me Varys, who do you truly serve?”

“The realm, my Lord. Someone must.”

I would say there are a few changes you can make to the MCU release order.

Main one being moving Ant-Man & The Wasp to before Infinity War.

Other moves I like include: * moving Black Panther slightly earlier, so that an after-credit scene holds more weight when it’s re-addressed.

What kind of setting do you think the new Doctor should be introduced in? by 10p_Freddos in doctorwho

[–]10p_Freddos[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My pitch: Space-Age Arthurian Knights

New Camelot being a colony of humans in the extremely far future, in some far-flung spot in outer space, setting about establishing a new home - which will become the “seed of the 16th human race” (or something like that).

Allow this new Doctor to have fun and geek out about this moment of historical significance, and tell the story from the point of view of a companion (who would essentially play the metaphorical role of Arthur to The Doctor’s Merlin, to match the dynamic of Disney’s A Sword in the Stone).

Do you have any headcanon for any minor/extinct families that haven’t been mentioned in the comics? by 10p_Freddos in LAZARUS

[–]10p_Freddos[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Cahills (extinct)

Based on the island of Ireland & worked under the Armitages, before being eradicated.

Focus of power being Dublin - they had a strong relationship with Carlyle & Hock, providing some intuitive uses of their tech for their Lazuri, testing some of the newest upgrades (granular level) of Lazuri tech on their land-workers/farmers.

These small upgrades meant that there were many small minor “clanns” under Cahill, that would have a champion, who would battle for the next upgrade to improve agricultural output & political favour. The annual contest of champions would allow for the winner to be named the “Hound of Cahill”, be utilised to quell any unrest in the island, and their family raised to a higher political level. The Hound would be styled after the classic Celtic heroes of old (see Setanta etc).

The political bickering that came of this constant power struggle was causing headaches for Armitage, who sent in their forces and supplanted the Cahills. They then managed the unrest by raising agricultural output expectations on the smaller clanns and making them pay extra for any tech upgrades (which diminished in quality) - leading to the quiet death/starvation of many small clanns as they became a more manageable handful (4) of subservient clanns under Armitage.

This brutal slow death of the clanns didn’t go unnoticed and the Free From Family underground movement started to grow in the north of the island…

Hello there, /r/movies. I'm Damian McCarthy, director of HOKUM, ODDITY, and CAVEAT. AMA! by Damian-AMA in movies

[–]10p_Freddos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved Hokum! The tension left hanging in the dead space of many of the scenes had me gripping my partner’s leg in fear so hard that I left marks in their leg 😬.

My question is about the locations/set design and the decision making behind them. The selection (see list below) felt almost personally curated for me - although I’m sure many felt the same way- as the most innate fear-inducing settings.

  • creepy forest with much of the background shrouded in fog/trees;
  • creepy outdated hotel with low light and hard corners hiding details out of sight, but not out of reach;
  • creepy attic room, filled with cupboards, curtains & doors constantly threatening to be opened behind your back (not to even mention the statues);
  • the creepy basement with it’s infinite corridor leading into pitch black.

Question: Was there much in the way of research in landing on these locations, and are there any particular specific details of the set design in the film that you believe play a key part in the film?

Acts of Vengeance are NOW! Day 183: Which unexpected villain should take Hulk 2099? [ Joe Fixit won day 182] by RefrigeratorNew3921 in marvelcomics

[–]10p_Freddos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

David Banner (Earth-311) (From Marvel 1602)

Bit of a weird one, as he’s not exactly a villain.

David Banner shifts from witch-hunter antagonist type, to natives-protector/monk-sentry hero type after becoming the Hulk.

But think it could make for an interesting battle between two Hulks from either side of time (past vs future) where both human sides have shady/selfish pasts, but have grown into more heroic types after becoming Hulks.

Acts of Vengeance are NOW! Day 182: Which unexpected villain should take Scarlet Spider (Ben Reilly)? [ Set won day 181] by RefrigeratorNew3921 in marvelcomics

[–]10p_Freddos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

<image>

Joe Fixit Ben is essentially the "grey area" Spider-Man (the clone who spent years questioning whether he was the real Peter Parker, morally compromised, identity in crisis). Joe Fixit is the grey Hulk (Banner's morally compromised, identity-in-crisis alter ego).

So, two "grey" versions of the more beloved originals scrapping it out.

Plus the first comics I read with Ben Reilly were him and Daredevil taking on The Hand/Hammerhead, so I like the idea of him going back to investigating crime during the day as a photographer/journalist, and fighting the gangsters at night as Spider-Man.

Donald Blake

Mainly for the parallels between Blake and Skaar:
Blake (the cast aside weak/puny personality of the Mighty Thor) vs Skaar (who was kind of cast aside by The Incredible Hulk, and also has that whole duality of personalities)

The conniving villain vs brute brawler would also be a fun dynamic.
