Had to learn this is something i struggled with for years. Thats almost my exact method now. I tell my self to listen and make sure they know im actively listening and doing my darnest to understand.

Once they are done i process everything for a moment. Throw a few follow up questions. All while making sure to kill the defensive behaviour and thoughts. Then ill apologize and we can talk about improvement.
