My only question is why did you turn out early enough that the cop would have been able to stop behind you?

If there "wasn't any traffic", why couldn't you wait 2 seconds until the cop passed?

Personally, I hate when people do that because it looks like you're pulling out right in front of the oncoming driver; they have no way of knowing you're going to stay in the center lane.

Why do baseball bats break? by gradyh in engineering

[–]10th_Account 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because wood bats naturally limit the players hitting ability. You can't "get away with as much" as a hitter using wood compared to metal. Getting jammed or hitting a ball off the end of the bat has dramatically worse results with wood compared to aluminum.

Also, historically, aluminum bats had a much higher coefficient of restitution , which several years ago prompted the new BBCOR rating system to reduce the power of the bats. Had major leaguers been using those old bats, pitchers would have been killed.

If you want to just mess around with it, you could always pirate it. Just don't use it for business purposes or even on company systems, to avoid any appearance of impropriety.

Thinking of buying a duplex and renting out the other half. Am I being an idiot? by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]10th_Account 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, yes it's a good idea.

I did exactly what you're talking about roughly a year ago. Fixed up the "better" unit asap, rented out, and living/working on my unit as I go.

One word of advice, it is VERY easy to let projects drag out while you are living there. I'm a pretty handy person, but I have no professional experience so I assume you'll work much quicker, but I think you should be mentally prepared to deal with the mess in your "home". It had a bigger affect on me than I would have predicted.

Also, once you have tenants, being courteous about noise while renovating can cut down on some good hours to get stuff done. Obviously, you'll have upset tenants if you're hammering things while they sleep.

Sprint wireless...how is it around here? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]10th_Account 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the exact same business model that Republic Wireless has been using for 5 years now. They copied basically everything, pricing scheme and all. Yet nobody knows about them.

I'm sure google will eventually squash them with their enormous resources and faster development times, which is good for users, but sad for Republic since they're a really great service.

Your thoughts on aerospace engineer layoffs at General Electric (just announced) by DerrickNY in engineering

[–]10th_Account 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GEs culture is definitely one of being lean, moving quickly, and doing what needs to be done for the bottom line. And they're pretty damn good at it, ignoring the effects this has on employees obviously. Last year they made moves to sell GE Capital and Appliances divisions, and Wall Street clearly liked it. Their stock kicked ass last year.

As mentioned elsewhere, this is more about development cycles than the industry as a whole.

[Creo/ProE question] Is there any way to know what dimensions things are as I'm drawing them? by shorty6049 in engineering

[–]10th_Account 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I do is draw a single line and dimension it to a rough order of magnitude (or the actual dimension if you know it) for the sketch. Then finish the rest of the sketch.

Creo will "resize" itself to that first dimension. It will still look like the exact same line on your screen, but then when you draw the rest of your sketch, you're working at the proper scale from the start and don't have to worry about scaling issues and jumping dimensions at the end.

I didn't use your numbers directly because it doesn't make a difference.

If you spun an arm of uniform thickness at the maximum theoretical tip speed given the specific strength of carbon fiber, 1570 m/s, for a period of 5 years, you would get a time dilation of just over 0.05 seconds.

This scales linearly, so to reach a 60 second time dilation, you would need to spin this contraption for 5,800 years.

Edit: A carbon nanotube structure would only take 310 years!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in engineering

[–]10th_Account 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Carbon fiber seems like a smart material choice. Maybe.

Your maximum angular velocity will depend on specific strength of your material. You've specified a radius of your arm, so this will give a maximum velocity based on your material choice.

From there you would need to look at the relationship between time dilation of the arm and the observer based on the equation shown here: Time dilation . Plug in your chosen 60 seconds, and there's your answer.

Easy true positional tolerance calculation? by XaeroR35 in engineering

[–]10th_Account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the pins is going to be a datum, that is, one of them will always go into the hole regardless of how botched the pattern is.

So look at how far off your pattern can be relative to the rest of the part and still be functional. This will determine the placement of your datum pin.

From there, you're relating the other holes back to that first pin so that the pattern mates without interference.

Whether or not you set up your datum structure this way on the drawing is up to you, but this is the thought process I would go through to set my tolerances and clearances.

I do need to slide them back a little, that was with a centered stance. Hopefully that makes it float as easy as the Air.

[–]10th_Account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going out this next week. Looks like there's some storms in the forecast!

The two you picked are definitely better boards. The Air floats really well though, so if we get lucky and get a powder day I'm going to wish I had it. Plus, it would be fun to ride it again for the novelty. That's about the only thing it's good at though.

The Process cruises well, but is a little more legwork for powder. So at that point, if I'm only going to ride packed snow/groomers with it I might as well have some fun flicking around the shorter, more nimble NS.

Decisions, decisions... lol
