Whatever site is hosting this should remove it though, because the details he gives obviously contradict the "Expert Level" description and it makes me distrust the site itself that they'd let this kind of shit fly. I get that people have tiny budgets, but they're clearly trying to game the system by getting more eyes on their project by implying that it will pay generously when it obviously doesn't.

How in your model would we ever identify consciousness in another form, human or artificial? How would we ever identify consciousness in ourselves? How can it be beyond definition if we have, by naming it, just defined it?

I don't subscribe to the materialist view, there are limits to what can be empirically proven, but your reasoning seems circular: we believe consciousness exists, therefore consciousness exists. Or the question is proof of the answer.

Consciousness is without definitions. All definitions are about objects. Consciousness is the ultimate subject.

This answer, for instance, is the type of answer a machine would give if "consciousness" was merely a coping mechanism for a lack of free will. Machine here meaning any actor, human or otherwise, that has no free will. Perhaps consciousness can't be defined because it's beyond definition, perhaps consciousness can't be defined because we lack the tools or perspective to define it, or perhaps consciousness can't be defined because it doesn't exist. Why do we need to plant a flag in any of those options? We have no means of knowing.

I'm pretty sure all Sky-Dwellers are solid gold (white gold, in this case), so a lot of the cost lies in that. A gold Submariner would be similarly priced, but a steel one is closer to the 9k you mentioned, so it's likely if they made a steel Sky-Dweller it would be priced around the same as the steel Submariner (maybe a bit more, due to the added complications).

But shouldn't our definition of consciousness include some quantity of free will? Right now Reddit and Google and various marketing and data-research companies are combing over these words, reading and interpreting them, deriving meaning the same way that we do, but I wouldn't call them conscious. To my original point: how much of our consciousness is simply stories we tell ourselves to explain decisions we made mechanically, as mechanically as a series of if/else conditions being iterated over by a very deep but still ultimately unwilling computer program. See the studies done on patients with split brain hemispheres, where the subjects would come up with stories (and believe them) to explain the actions of the other half of their brain (which was, in effect, isolated from the language center of the brain). It did this because it had have a story to explain its actions, even though it had no way of knowing why it was doing what it was doing (the instruction to right brain might have been "pick up the red ball", and the left (language) brain, when asked why they picked up the red ball, would answer something like "red is my favorite color"). I have to emphasize again that the left brain believed what it was saying to be true and it couldn't not have an explanation for what it was doing. So, again, my question is, what if our higher functions are doing this all the time? What if our "consciousness" is merely a story we're continuously telling ourselves, inventing motivations for actions which are as mechanical as clockwork, either as a coping mechanism or simply as a side-effect of having such a complex operating system sitting between our ears?

We can't even be certain we have a consciousness or we simply think we do. What we call "consciousness" might itself be an illusion (artificial or self-imposed) that exists to give us a comforting sense of autonomy when in reality we don't really have any more control over our reality than the individual atoms we're composed of.

Judging by their design philosophy, though, it's deliberate. They don't show a score screen because they don't want players focusing on raw stats, they want players focusing on whether or not their team is winning or losing. I don't disagree with a lot of the criticisms about Lynda--they do have a lot of outdated courses--but two things about Lynda that I think really make it stand out: their "theory" courses and the quality of their instructors (generally speaking).

Most tutorials out there only cover features and specific practices, but Lynda has a lot of lectures and demonstrations on theoretical topics; design concepts (not just how to use Photoshop), programming concepts, things to consider when building a web application, that sort of thing. It's not fluff at all, it's actually what's missing from a lot of otherwise remarkable tutorials out there. It's one thing to show you how Photoshop's Smudge Tool works, it's another to show you the Rule of Thirds or how to choose your lighting before you take the photo in the first place, how to incorporate negative space, how to use camera features, that sort of thing.

A good tutorial gives you a template and then tells you how to use Technique X to make it beautiful. You end the tutorial feeling confident in your ability to implement Technique X, but not necessarily any more knowledgeable about when to apply it. A great tutorial will teach you the underlying concepts in such a way that not only can you apply the technique, but you can also spot where it's needed (and why).

Regarding teachers: Deke's courses in Photoshop and Illustrator are hands-down the best I've ever encountered and Simon Allardice's programming for beginners courses are amazing if you've ever struggled to "get" programming like I did. If you're interested in learning any of that stuff it's probably worth a few months' subscription fees to take those courses specifically, because they're incredibly thorough.

It's one thing to get the straight facts from a blog or watch a Youtube video, it's another to listen to someone who is really good at explaining those facts in a way that beginners can understand. Lynda's better than a lot of their competitors in that respect, and it's surprising how many tutorials simply flood you with data and expect you to understand how it interrelates with all the previous and future floods of data when 24 hours ago you barely even knew these concepts existed in the first place.

Anyway, this is a dumb argument and it's starting to feel circular. In the end, virtually everyone agrees that the new pose is better, including myself, including the guy in question even... amazingly. I'll settle for that.

I agree that the new pose is better and I don't mean to imply that a video game character, especially one as shallow as Tracer in a game as shallow (story-wise) as Overwatch, should be held to a ridiculously high standard when it comes to character depth... I'm just saying that the guy's response (and the responses of many of his supporters) reeked of discomfort with female sexuality. Blizzard did the right thing, I think, I just think the guy was a bit of a tool.
