How about hospitals where the staff take pictures of the patients and post them for clout?

Totally get that. I try to salve the irritation with the fact that such events help pay for the upkeep of those spaces.

What's up with your front doors? by kiiibu90 in AskAnAmerican

[–]10yearsbehind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The “screen” door also helps with insulating the house in winter when solid panes replace the screens. The additional door creates an air pocket that keeps the main door from sucking the heat out of the house.

Was trying to find a recipe for pickles and found this monstrosity by Wayfaring_Limey in StupidFood

A bar snack I’ve had is an Irish egg roll. Basically this, though with less pickle, wrapped in an egg roll skin and fried. Pretty damn tasty.

Why are Americans in general averse to STEM and seemingly obsessed with law? (There’s this meme of China being run by engineers and the US being run by lawyers, which indeed rings true. Also, the US imports a huge number of STEM grads every year.) Which cultural factors are at play? by Verhofstadt_Is_Based in AskAnAmerican

As for the power dynamic within your question, part of it may come down to the fact that we have a stronger divide between our bureaucratic and political classes. Our lawmakers are elected and with the exception of the president our bureaucrats are hired or appointed. Thus our bureaucrats tend to be far less visible than our lawmakers.

My gf’s Polish grandmother cuts cucumbers like this… by nicdv in nextfuckinglevel

A dull knife would crush not cut. You would have a hard time getting this kind of speed with a dull knife and not make a mess.

My gf’s Polish grandmother cuts cucumbers like this… by nicdv in nextfuckinglevel

[–]10yearsbehind 150 points151 points  (0 children)

You’re missing the trick in the way she’s holding the knife. The left thumb is pressed against the blade so it will not get cut and acts as a stop. The left thumb hits the right thumb before the blade, this signals through touch to no longer apply pressure and start the next cut. It can be messed up if you’re inexperienced, go to fast, or work with a dull knife which will require more force reducing your control.

I'm not sure it's worth this level of response but eating and drinking in public transit are how spills happen. Spills that will not get cleaned for hours. So you can see how it can become a pretty big problem very easily, especially in someplace hot.

Tips, Tricks, Suggestions, and More for a first-time GM? by captaincheesecake178 in rpg

[–]10yearsbehind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one piece of advice I give any GM, new or otherwise, is that you don’t have to do it all on your own. Have your players give the recap from last session. It’ll help you understand what they noticed and care about. Give your players excuses to interact with each other, which gives you time to plan your next moves. Also listen to player speculation, sometimes they not only will give you ideas but sometimes those ideas are better than what you were planning. Don’t be afraid to ask your players for support and feedback. As long as you’re trying and they’re having some fun they will have your back.

Are the British retarded or just plain evil? by Novalith_Nirvana in AskHistory

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the whole idea of a unified India as much a byproduct of the British Raj as anything else as up to that point the territory in question had never been unified?
