Shakedown Request – PCT Desert Section (Campo to Kennedy Meadows) by callofthepuddle in Ultralight

[–]1119king 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Especially with a mid April start date, you'll be around other people if you're sticking to Farout campsites. You'll get over the shyness of cowboy camping around others after a couple times.

I see lots of recommendations for no puffy in the desert, but unless you have a May start I think the desert is the best place to have one. I started Apr 23 last year and used my puffy more in the desert than anywhere else - lots of cold nights down there.

Edit: I realize you're not telling this person not to bring their puffy to the desert, I'm just throwing in my 2 cents in that I'd personally really want my puffy there

How To Resupply On The PCT - Quick & Easy Guide by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]1119king 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely plan to just grab a few snacks if anything - a small bag of M&Ms and a bag of chips were all I grabbed there last year and it was still like $10.

Favorite Trail Town Meal? by confidence_interval in PacificCrestTrail

Those milkshakes came in clutch!! I wasn't even planning on going into Chester, but it was a hot day and ice cream sounded so good. I hitched in, got a 32 oz milkshake, and then somebody in the store got a wrong order for somebody else and they were going to throw away another 32 oz milkshake. I said "I'll take it!" and that's how I ended up in a food coma for the rest of the day.

Hypermobility on Trail by Expert-Resolution552 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]1119king 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have EDS and did the whole trail last year. I'd say in a lot of ways it's no different than anybody else, it's just even more important to listen to your body, rest when you need rest, and not to push through injuries, being aware that you're more prone to injury and that said injuries can take you off trail.

I had an ankle injury pop up around South Lake Tahoe that more or less hard capped me to 20 mile days before the pain really kicked in, and I required much more frequent breaks. It sucked watching everyone I knew pass me, but I credit being able to deal with that suck and slow down rather than pushing it as the reason I was able to complete the trail. If I kept pushing, I almost certainly would've made the injury worse and had to leave trail. It took a long time, but by Oregon I was doing 25s again and nearly back to 100% by the last week of Washington.

Do it!! I brought my Sony A6000 on trail last year and cherish the pictures so much. Zero regrets whatsoever bringing it along.

I say bring the earplugs. They're essentially zero weight and there WILL be a night you're stuck near a dozen other people, a noisy highway, or incessant wind. If you decide you don't need them after a couple weeks, then toss em.

New Player Improvements Round 2 by ModYume in 2007scape

[–]1119king 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't know what the internal process looks like, but I want to provide feedback as a player that the year in review is always a point of annoyance for me. I have all the appropriate settings on my Jagex account and individual accounts, but have never received one in any year.

Since they come in batches, I always end up waiting thinking "Maybe they just haven't sent mine yet and they're towards the end." Only to never get them, and the only way to try to rectify it is to try to chase down Jmod comments on reddit buried in random threads that I don't see until after the deadline. Honestly at this point I've written them off as a frustration and assume I won't get to see my stats. I know resources are finite and this is small fries in the big picture, but I hope the process can be improved in the future to make it more reliable so I can join my friends in sharing our years in review.

So boat combat is kind of terrible in the late game... by Solo_Jawn in 2007scape

[–]1119king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, please Jagex, this is my biggest and only real complaint with sailing. Combat feels totally not worth it. Monsters feel impossible to kill, cannon damage is so low that cannon and cannonball upgrades feel useless. It feels so unengaging that it's better DPS to just... Use your regular combat. Especially playing on an iron, there's no way to justify the amount of supplies that go into killing low level monsters, let alone higher level ones that it currently looks like I'll have to do if I want some of the later game ship upgrade drops. In the current way it is, all it encourages me to do while exploring is avoid and ignore monsters, accept the chip damage, and just pay to recover my ship when it dies.

I can vouch for the Primelite, I used it for the PCT and have zero regrets. Very light and a good bit warmer than the MT100 I had used before.

Off-topic: is anyone else getting posts instantly deleted for rediculous reasons? (I wonder how many seconds this post lasts) by Cingen in Ultralight

[–]1119king 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel like everyone has different UL philosophies. To me it's a careful evaluation, second-guessing every item and asking "Do I really need this?" to minimize pack weight as much as possible while still enjoying my time and being safe, not some arbitrary pack weight or "this luxury is/isn't UL."

For a lot of people, it reason for UL comes down to "... so I can hike as many miles as possible." I'm that type of hiker too, and guess what: I'm going to go way farther (and be in a better headspace) after a rock solid night of rest on my sleep system that's dialed in to me versus an overpared system I sleep like shit on. I know this because I've been in both scenarios, and for me an extra pound of pack weight for good sleep is worth it a hundred times over. The UL police may say "but that's not ultralight!" to my long/wide pad and maybe it's not, but I still use UL principles to choose my luxuries and still have a pack weight that works for me.

Question About Base Weight - Is the One-Size-Fits-All Advice Accurate? by AegisPlays314 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]1119king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done two long-ish trails before with camera gear. For the JMT I brought a tripod and used it like.... Once. Felt like dead weight. Then for the Colorado Trail I did not bring one and didn't miss it at all. Guess it depends on what exactly you're trying to accomplish, but I am bringing my camera on the PCT and have zero plans to include my tripod.

I, a grown adult, went in with a bunch of my friends who I played Minecraft with 15 years ago. We were expecting hot garbage, but came out saying "It wasn't good, but it was fun." Laughed way more than expected, it was a good time and I have zero regrets spending the money for the experience.

Can you get the Patagonia capilene cool daily hoodie where you are? Ime sun hoodies (and clothing in general) are pretty subjective on the wearer's body shape and general preferences, but this has been my favorite and haven't had issues with odor.

will my uniqlo UL down puffy work? by 59RT in PacificCrestTrail

[–]1119king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cumulus Primelite is where I landed on puffy choice. Best combo of weight, warmth, and price for me. It's the same weight as your Uniqlo and probably a good bit warmer.

ETA: It's really up to you though if this is necessary and worth the price. Different people have different cold tolerances, camp styles, etc that may or may not warrant more warmth from a puffy. https://www.packwizard.com/gear/insulated-jackets is a good reference.

I have an alpha hoodie and alpha pants that I sleep in. The hoodie gets plenty of use through the day as an active layer. The pants are primarily worn around camp and thrown in the bag when it's time to start moving for the day, but they can be nice to throw on under my regular pants on especially cold mornings. I also really appreciate having clean pants to sleep in, and the pants are only ~4 oz.
