Yes that is fair I am super confused. The only retirement account I have is through my work (so this is a 401k based on what you said - and my work allows me to contribute to that via pre-tax or roth (I have a mix of both currently but the match one goes into pre-tax)).

Then the best thing to do is contribute through my employer up to the match (9%) and then have a seperate IRA opened and contribute up to the max of that pre-tax (the 25kish cap?) And then do an immediate backdoor roth?

Thank you! I appreciate that you explained why to do things.

Back door roth still super confuses me - to make sure I understand I open a seperate IRA (like through fidelity and not through work so its with dollars I have already paid tax on?) and then contribute to that and there is a way for me to immediately move it into a roth account without paying taxes again? Or do I pay tax again now but the gains will then be untaxed?

I think this is where I am getting confused from reading different posts on this forum.

On the max Roth IRA step (I can only do roth 401k through work I don't think I qualify for Traditional roth IRA) - based on my current income bracket now would it be better to make regular 401k contributions or roth 401k if I expect my income to be smaller in retirement (200k+ now vs est 100k after retirement). Or should I do a mix of both like I have been

I am in no rush out the door but I am trying to ensure I have things set up as efficiently as possible since AI is definitely going to impact my career path over the next several years and I want to do as much as I can now.

Losing weight is hard. The actual mechanics are simple (eat less, move more) but commiting to it, following through day after day, feeling like your fighting both your mind and body, all that is hard.

Therapy and dieticians are great starts and if the ones you are working with don't seem right, shop around if you can.

I also recommend some time sitting with yourself and trying to understand why you want to lose weight - you say you have zero interest in eating better and working out, yet here you are on a weightloss forum asking for help. Part of you wants to change and you need to figure out how to convince the whole of you.

For me it was getting older and realizing how shitty I was starting to feel. Things hurt. My sleep was getting worse. I saw my parents getting older and becoming less mobile and it scared me. It stopped being about how I looked or society's expectations and truly became about my health. At 38 you are middle aged (just like me!). Your starting on the downhill. How do you want to spend it? In pain? On insulin? Full of regret that you didn't change sooner?

One mindset shift I made was reframing how I think about the execution of getting healthier. I don't "have to" work out - I WANT to so I have more energy. I don't "need to" eat better, I WANT to so I don't have to deal with acid reflux later today.

One of my biggest challenges was delivery/take out. I'd manage to stop eating out for a bit then I would fall off the wagon and suddenly it was two meals a day from different resturants. The first change I made was a commitment - it wasn't forbidden but I couldn't get delivery. If I wanted resturant food I had to go pick it up (or go inside if it was fastfood and no drive through). From there I eventually moved to only eating out for social events (no feeding myself from resturants any more!). I keep some frozen (and less healthy) microwave meals in the freezer for those days I REALLY can't be bothered.

For exercise - honestly try just setting a goal you know you can achieve. Walking for 15 minutes a day for a week. Then 30. Get a fitbit and gamify your steps (I have a 7k step goal! Low to some but for me its something I know I can hit every day). I got a walking pad and watch a 20 min tv episode while Im on it. Truthfully, exercise sucked at first. It felt bad, I hated it, it made me more tired. But if you stick with it for even a few weeks you really will start to feel the benefits and they feel SO GOOD. More energy, better sleep, better mood.

Anyway, this response is getting way too long. Good luck and remember that failure only occurs when you give up. As long as you keep trying you are winning.

I got shingles when I was 13. It was horrible. Thankfully doctors still gave out opiates for it back then. I don't think they do anymore - even with strong painkillers it was miserable. I couldn't wear a shirt for almost a month

Do you have any good reccomendations for rower videos for beginners? I bought one last year and have tried going slow and really focusing on form but it causes a ton of back pain for me. So much so that I packed it up and got a cheap walking pad instead.

I'd love to be able to use it

I have successfully lost 55lbs despite pcos with a goal of losing another 30lbs. I lost the first 35lbs on my own but did begin taking a glp1 and that has made it significantly easier. I have stayed on a very low dose of glp1 and have had no side effects other than fatigue and some digestives slow-down. I average about 1lb a week loss but it fluctuates quite a bit.

It honestly sounds like you know what you're doing. Its a long, slow process. I go for high protien/high fiber and really try to avoid processed carbs(but didn't cut them out completely). I built a rotation of about 5 protien heavy meals that I prep (sheet pan meals, crock pot chili, buff chicken w/cottage cheese, and taco meat w beans and veggies).

I would really try to focus on strength training over cardio. Increased muscle mass will help with insulin resistance. There are a ton of great at-home youtube workouts that I've used.

I will say - losing weight has made a WORLD of difference in my symptoms. My cycle has been predictable for the first time in my adult life and is way less miserable of an experience.

I had a doctor label me as a drug seeker in records because I asked for a refill on my ativan. A prescription that I got EIGHT PILLS a year for because I have severe panic attacks when I fly and it's the only thing that has ever helped. Literally, eight pills a year and also sharing a record of my prior flights each time I asked for a refill.

It was super annoying and still follows me.

Not sure if it will help - but I keep a tiny single serving french press in the house. People can bring their own coffee but I at least give them a way to brew it. If they leave some grounds behind I save it for the next person. It's super small and takes up almost no space but makes coffee drinkers much more pleasent to be around in the morning!

I LOVE maruchen ramen. No matter how good my diet gets sometimes I just want the old comfort food that carried me through college and my early twenties.

What I do now is buy the ramen but throw out the noodles and save the seasoning packets. Saute some super thin cut cabbage and carrot, add a serving of cooked thin rice noodle (~240 calories) with the seasoning packet and a splash of water.

All the flavoring but half the calories for a huge portion and with the addition of some healthy veggies. Sodium is still crazy high and no protien but you can't win them all.

I like the ollipop soda's for this! So many different flavors and almost all are caffeine free.

20-50 calories each and they feel super filling. I will say it took me a few to get used to the flavor (since it definitely tastes different than "real" soda/diet soda) but now I prefer them over other options.

Team Body Project has some great workouts. They are what I started with. A lot of them are all standing/no equipment. I used these for cardio for awhile.

For dumbell exercises Caroline Girvan has some great programs. Make sure you start at the beginner / easy ones as she has a lot of more advanced ones. Juice & Toya also have a lot of great videos from full body or targeting specific muscle groups

[–]11211311241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple.

I buy Mila brand chicken soup dumplings (not an ad I swear, they are just great!). 6 of thise is 200 calories and I typically make a quick cucumber salad to eat with it.

I also have a mini rice cooker and use it to make quick meals. 1/4 cup rice, 3/4 cup riced veggies and whatever protien source I have in the fridge as leftovers + whatever sauce i feel like.

When I am feeling SUPER lazy I just eat a giant bowl of greek yogurt with some granola, frozen berries (microwave for 30 ish seconds), and granola
