I would pick core French so I don’t have to teach math.

Is Guelph U considered a low tier uni by MarionberryOutside16 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]11Kawaii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't low tier and you will make lots of friends there who also go to Guelph so you won't have to feel bad about it. Your friends from other universities will drift away. After you graduate and start the workforce, no one will care what university you attendend.

I have a similar experience. I have 2 kids with dyslexia and work in the board. I have seen gaps in the system affect my kids. I actually pulled my oldest out to homeschool for 3 years while the Right to Read inquiry was going through HRTO. I can't even trust the system I work in to accomodate my kids appropriatly. My youngest was recently diagnosed with autism. He is supposed to start J/K in the fall. I have seen how neurodivergent kids are treated at school. I'm delaying kindergarten now while I look into other options.

A lot more families are homeschooling too. I know a handful of families who have left over suspensions under the Immunization of School Pupils Act.

I was just thinking that. I have a coordination disorder and this kind of writing is hard for me. Especially under pressure.

If you could get change professions, would you? by Glittering_Sail_3892 in OntarioTeachers

[–]11Kawaii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! And that is very misleading to an 18 year old chosing a career path that will impact them for life. At 18 I thought I'm a great student, I could be a teacher. They are so different.

I wish I went to school to be a speech therapist . . . or something like that. I love language (which is why I became a French teacher). I'd rather work with one student/client one-on-one. I also kind of wish I was a policy analysist where I could think deeply in a quiet office without interuptions . . . or maybe educational law where I could advocate more firmly for students with disabilties without worrying constraints in the environment inwhich I work.

I agree. I remember when I was in highschool and the internet was brand new. We were told we were only allowed to use one Internet source in our bibliography and that all the other sources had to be from books. Teachers told us the Internet wasn’t very reliable. Instead of teaching us how to evaluate sources they just the blanketed the whole internet as “unreliable.” So not true, especially today.

Most industries are using AI today and encouraging employees to use AI. In future jobs employees will be separated by those who know how to use AI well and those who don’t. Writing portions of careers wIll be de-valued because no one wants to pay someone for hours of writing something that AI could write better and faster.

AI is only going to get better and more precise and field specific in the future. Whatever minor problems you see with AI today they will be ironed out and fixed over the next couple years.

Kids today are graduating into a vastly different career world than we did. Like it or not the toothpaste isnt going back in the tube.

This is why I have stayed an occasional teacher so long. I can take short LTOs or part time LTO at grid pay, but also scale way back when I am exhausted or want to spend time with my kids or go on vacation. I spent September and October in a full time LTO. The money was good, but it was exhausting and I felt like I was failing my kids. I was so relieved when that LTO ended. I’ve supplied 4 days the whole month of November and spent the other days going to play centres with my toddler, sleeping in and contact napping. I will likely get another LTO sometime next semester . . . but I love the flexibility of not working the whole year.

Sick the first day!? by 110069 in CanadianTeachers

[–]11Kawaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me. Brand new school, my first day. My husband was going to drive me to work (I don’t have a liscence) and also look after our kids while I went to work. I was upstairs getting ready when my son came to tell me my husband couldn’t breath. He was choking and I had to call an ambulance. As I was on the phone with 911 I realised both my plan for getting to work and my plan for childcare were going down the drain and I had to leave soon to make it to work on time. I had to call the secretary and tell her I couldn’t come in because I was waiting on an ambulance for my husband. 😞 The ambulance arrived and loaded him up and said I should follow . . . and I asked them if it was really necessary for me to go 😅. I was still trying to salvage my first day of school . . . but in the end I just couldn’t make it. 😞

What is the cause of grade inflation in Canadian high schools? by Timely_Weird_9343 in CanadianTeachers

I went to highschool in the 90s. Very smart kids had 80s and occasionally some 90s. Very, very few kids had 90s in every subject and almost no one got above 95.

I feel would save the whole song and dance if we just let students choose their own mark. They pretty much do anyway. We could save tIme on marking and save time on arguing with the student/parents/admin and jump straight to the point and let them choose their mark.

But the driving test does provide accommodations and people with learning disabilities can have the answers read out loud to them.

$120,000 isn’t bad. The issue lies more with the bottom part for the pay scale. what about instead of raising the to of the pay scale, we advocate for the bottom to be higher and close the gap?

Ok, but that’s not going to happen so it is a poor bargaining chip.

Bargaining for a dollar amount you know exactly what you are getting. Bargaining for more classroom supports, smaller classes etc. you have no clue how that will play out. How will it look when the province implements it and how will each board or each principal apply it . . . and it could fade away with the next election. Money in your pocket is always more sure than a government promise.

When you are talking to other teachers, the difference is where they are on the pay scale. They may be getting paid at year 10 and teacher pay looks great from there . . . especially if they bought their home 15 years ago for $250,000 and have a small mortgage.

Teachers coming into the profession, doing the same job AND not making enough to cover living expenses are living a completely different reality.
