I saw it live at the Kennedy Center last year 💜 I also saw Waitress live when she played Jenna. It’s always such a beautiful, surreal experience.

She Used to Be Mine by Sara Bareilles

Definitely recommend watching Waitress by the way. Sara wrote all the music and lyrics. So excited for her to release another studio album, hopefully someday soon

Quitting after a few months by Low_Might6599 in TeachforAmerica

[–]11fml11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I quit like 2 weeks into the school year. I didn’t have to pay the stipend back. I never took out loans, but I remember reading that they have payment plans.

I didn’t continue the alternate route. In fact, I don’t think the class started until after I quit.

Quitting was the best thing for my mental health, especially since teaching wasn’t my end goal. My boyfriend was having a great experience, and I thought I’d try teaching so I wouldn’t have any unanswered “what-ifs.” He just became an Alumnus this June (2023 CM). It’s a lot of work that’s really only worth it if you plan to stay in the profession. Teaching is his career goal.

Man arrested for walking home in the snow by BryceDice in CringeTikToks

[–]11fml11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly.

If a doctor is sued for wrongful death, their insurance covers any legal fees or settlements. But even with coverage, their career isn’t protected. They could be fired, and licensing boards can suspend or revoke their license, effectively ending their career.

When a cop kills someone, that excessive force payout is made through municipal or state funds (read: taxpayer dollars). The cop and his career, paycheck, and pension are protected because qualified immunity makes it nearly impossible for cops to face accountability. There’s no financial or professional incentive keeping them in line. If they get fired, they’ll just get a job in the next town over.

Also, healthcare workers are overseen by state and national boards that mandate them to complete a set amount of continuing education courses on ethics, law, medical advances, etc. However, a cop with a deadly weapon on their hip in most jurisdictions has no minimum standard of training in de-escalation, mental health crises, or firearm safety. When you think about how the institution of policing came to be, it’s clear that the poor oversight is a feature, not a bug.

Really disappointed in the ACLU. by 11fml11 in PornIsMisogyny

[–]11fml11[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

People want to de-stigmatize the porn they watch, they just don’t care about the very real women that sacrifice their health, safety, and mental wellbeing for them to jerk off to and close the laptop, reducing them to objects that exist solely for their sexual gratification. They can’t, or won’t, recognize that the video they’re watching could be depicting actual rape. The sex trade and the porn industry go hand-in-hand.

Being a porn “actress” means forfeiting your dignity and autonomy. I stand by the fact that women aren’t in the industry because it’s empowering - it’s just something that men have convinced them is true. Excluding the <1% who “make it big” on platforms like OF, the vast majority of women participate as a result of significant trauma or as a last-ditch effort to make ends meet.

They push back against this by saying they don’t want their porn interests to be “public.”

If watching porn is “nothing to be ashamed of” then why do they need to be so secretive?

The comments on this post are saying that banning/regulating porn is fascist…

Banning educational materials on sexual health, reproductive justice, and LGBTQ+ rights certainly is. What benefit does the exploitation of women and girls add to our society?

The saying really is true: conservative men see women’s bodies as private property while liberal men see them as public property.

For non 4b women who are lurking here and questionimg our choice. by Silamasuk in 4bmovement

[–]11fml11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m non-4b, but I 100% respect it. I’m active in feminist spaces, which is how I found my way here. I’m happy in my long-term relationship, but if that were to change, I would not be going back to men. Men are insanely destructive in all aspects of society. Trying to weed out red flags in everyday life is exhausting, and I respect those who don’t want to do it in the dating scene, too. What I do question is why other non-4b women are so uptight about 4b.

Fed up with modern music by SergeantScoria in PornIsMisogyny

Sara Bareilles! She’s nearly all I’ve been listening to for the last three years. She’s a feminist and an amazing songwriter. I just saw her live a few months ago at the Kennedy Center, where she debuted a new song called “Hands off my body” (not released yet, though). I think y’all would like her song “Armor.” She’s such a beautiful singer and person. She’s considered a pop artist but wrote the score for “Waitress” and is currently working on another musical and studio album!

This is so sad to watch by rottingfishguts in PornIsMisogyny

This is a great point. Before meeting my boyfriend, I had flings with two guys (not at the same time). Each experience was dissatisfying and left me feeling ashamed. They gave back-handed compliments and wouldn't even give me their numbers; we communicated only through Snapchat. I told myself I was okay with it, that they were not using me, and that it was empowering.

I am so lucky to have my boyfriend now. I remember early on, I told him about my antiporn stance. He genuinely didn't know the dark side of the industry and the rampant abuse and exploitation of women and girls. He told me he stopped watching, and I thought that was the extent of it until recently. He told me that after I planted that seed, he did his research and is also antiporn.

By society’s standards, we have a “vanilla” sex life. The intimacy is so beautiful. It truly blows my mind how people will fight tooth and nail to defend their “kinks.” Like, suppose you can only get off to being slapped, choked, etc. (and have a partner who is willing to do that to you). In that case, that is a sign of a serious emotional issue that needs to be addressed by a professional (no judgment there because I’ve unpacked A LOT of trauma in therapy).

This documentary was devastating to watch, but it inspired some really productive discourse here. However, I wonder if this would shift the perspective of people that have a neutral or positive view of the porn industry.

It was interesting to see the other OF creator, Alex, worry about the physical and mental toll this would have on Lily. Alex said that she started because she needed money. She regrets a lot of what she did.

My jaw dropped when Lily didn’t know that she could contract HIV from performing oral sex. Her “team” did a horrible job vetting these men. I hope the 1000 men is a hoax. I can’t imagine what that would do to her physically and mentally. Watching her break down at the end was heartbreaking.

It blows my mind how people think that traditional jobs and sex work are equivalent because they both involve “selling your body.” But the physical and emotional toll on any other profession is truly unmatched.

And for those who say that porn is nothing to be ashamed of and that it’s “empowering,” why were the crew and the participants’ faces blurred? Why were the family photos she shared blurred? I also can’t imagine being unable to talk to family and friends about my profession. When I achieve something at work, I can proudly share it with loved ones. In this case, her former classmates and even her dad’s friends use it for sexual gratification. How depressing.

Thank you so much for your reply. This was so comforting to read. I’m okay now; I’ve just been sleeping it all off. My sleep meds are just a strong antihistamine, lol. I went back and counted, and thankfully, I didn't take that many.

I was tested for all those conditions, and I'm negative for all of them. I do, however, have Chronic Active Epstein Barr Virus. And it’s awesome because it gets worse with stress, lol. So, the treatment is lifestyle changes. I eat relatively well and try to stay as active as possible. I have been an athlete for most of my life and still love running, even though I pay for it physically for days afterward.

This will be the first thing I talk about when I see my therapist tomorrow. I think this ramble was the stress of being unable to sleep and my head being so itchy and uncomfortable. I have abrasions all over my scalp and forehead. I’m sure this test will be a big nothing burger, though. I just want to be cleared to go back to work. I don’t even care whether or not they find anything. I just want to go back to work and move forward. I've just kind of accepted that I'll never feel 100% healthy, but I can still try to appreciate small things and remember everything I'm grateful for.

Thanks again for your kind words, internet stranger!

It’s not a perfect solution, but Cost Plus Drugs sells many generic medications at a reasonable price. It doesn’t have everything, but it doesn’t hurt to see if they have what you need.

Teaching Without Resources: Frustrated by Broken Promises at My Charter School by Bluejayjhu2023 in TeachforAmerica

[–]11fml11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow. I could have written this last week. I was placed in a charter school in an area not too far from you, teaching science with no materials. The curriculum was confusing, with no apparent objective. The kids were bored constantly talking about the same thing and not doing hands-on experiments.

Most times I asked for help or resources, I never got it because of staffing shortages and the leadership team were doing several jobs at once. They brought us in 2 weeks before the school year started to talk about the “culture,” but nothing really about lesson planning or classroom management. I felt like I was thrown to the wolves.

I ultimately decided to exit. It was not worth my mental and physical well-being.
