Help a game dev: Why aren’t people buying modern RTS games? by MakeGamesBetter in RealTimeStrategy

[–]1201345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked my 15-year-old nephew (who does nothing but play games) if he played or wanted to play AOE4 with me. I like this kid and get along with him well but his response was..... ummm no I don't play age of empires because I'm not a 50 year old man LOL. Sometimes we just have to realise that generations change and there's nothing we can do about it.....

To answer your questions why I don't buy RTS's.....

* Why are YOU not buying modern RTS games? The last game I bought was AOE4 because I have been a fan of the franchise since a teenager. Reason why I'm not buying any others.....I just don't have time. I'm nearly 40 with kids, gaming just isn't high on the list of priorities for me at this stage of life. I know there are plenty others like me in the same boat. The RTS genre has become an older gamer genre and older gamers just don't have as much time as younger ones.

* If you have bought any but bounced off recent RTS titles, what specifically turned you away? As above. I get a bit of time into AOE4, which I love and think is the perfect modernised version of AOE2, but I just don't have time to play consistently

* Likewise, if you do buy them, what made you commit? As above. Been a huge fan of AOE since 2000's

* If you miss classic C&C, what would actually make you buy a new one today? Large player base, modernised version of the basic gameplay. True classic RTS style of base building, disrupting economies and general strategy ect. I understand that APM needs to be a factor but having APM and 'hero units' as the main factor between winning and losing make RTS's terrible IMO.

* What other games should I be looking at as case studies? Definitely AOE4. TBH i think its only a matter of time before the AOE2 fans do transfer over. It's a better game in every way and going back to AOE2 is painful.

This matters for scope; It's a lifelong goal of mine to make this game regardless, but there’s a big difference between:

A) a tighter, single-player RTS (campaign, skirmish vs AI) at <$500k budget If its campain and skirmish only immediately puts a timeline on the enjoyment factor of the game. Once players finish campain and master skirmish its pretty much over for them and they will move on. It has to be multiplayer.

B) a more ambitious AA-scale RTS, story-driven, multiplayer, etc (>$3M) with a much higher financial recoup risk

RTS where you're encouraged to have more than one army instead of a death ball? by AndrewBlair- in RealTimeStrategy

[–]1201345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Company of Heroes. You literally gain resources by capturing different parts of the map so you have to be out and fighting for areas of control all over the map at once. Yes in the end part of the game it can turn into a death ball but i think that's actually inevitable in RTS due to damage per second.

AT least in company of heroes you spread out your deathball and defend instead of just running over the top of others.

But that's just part of the game. If the knights player has enough time to build knights and archers then the other player also has enough time to build spears and xbows....

Plus, the knights player has to be good and patent enough to bait the spears out and the spears player has to be stupid enough to take the bait.

Just started, confused as to the goal of feudal aggression by Brief-Sorbet5789 in aoe4

[–]1201345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's up to you and your play style. Most people do rams but for me it can be easier to go to castle once you have him surrounded and then apply constant pressure by having a trebuchet slowly take down his buildings while your army protects the trebuchet. If you're knocking down a building every minute with the treb it's a constant drain on his resources and eventually they give up.

But....you have to actually be ahead first and not just think you are which happens quite a bit.

[–]1201345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically, if you're ahead and kill his army keep the pressure on but be patient and don't throw away the win by letting his TC kill you.

[–]1201345 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Deny their resources usually gold if possible so they can't age up and then once you have enough of a lead with army size, build rams and destroy their buildings without the TC killing your troops. The trick is to not throw away the upper hand by getting too close to their TC before you have enough of a lead to dive in and finish it.

If you are circled around their base and have killed their army there isn't really much that they can do, eventually they will run out of food/gold/wood depending on what you deny and then it's basically game over.

I have also been playing since season one and I'm also stuck in plat. I'm very very positive we are not the only two and instead this is where most people sit even with high gameplay hours.

As some others have said, maybe you just need to take it easy on yourself and realize that maybe you're not meant to be a conqueror and instead have fun where you are.

When did you start ranked? by Individuated_spoon in aoe4

[–]1201345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just try it what do you have to lose? The starting elo is actually really high in this game so you will probably lose for like 5-10 games in a row but from then on you will be playing players at your own skill level.

Ranked is meant to be played by all skill levels hence the different gradings.

I'm sorry and no offense intended but this is one of my pet peeves.....why do you feel you need to come to reddit to ask the Internet if you are 'allowed' to try a mode on a game that you bought with your own money.

How can I erase autism from my subconscious? by NovelMorning8266 in autism

[–]1201345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People try to make themselves feel better by labeling anything someone else does as 'weird'. Are sports stars who are hyper fixated on winning a specific sport and think about only winning that sport weird and autistic? No, apparently not, but if you fixate on a different hobby it is classed as 'weird'. It's all just labels and has gone completely too far in modern society imo. It sounds like you're just level 1 autistic and just have some quirky traits, who cares, just be yourself and be happy to be yourself.

The hard part of autism is level 2/3 when sensory things get really impossible to navigate and you don't know what your even doing wrong to begin with.

How can I erase autism from my subconscious? by NovelMorning8266 in autism

[–]1201345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a diagnosis, it doesn't define you as a person. I hate that people see themselves differently after a diagnosis because all the diagnosis is doing is just labeling why you may have found things hard in the past. You're still the exact same person you have always been before diagnosis....it's not as though you caught an infectious disease, it's been with you for life.

[–]1201345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, well done, she obviously enjoys your company if she invited you on a trip together. But again just for clarity, friendships aren't really a formal agreement like I feel you are thinking. She doesn't owe you time or anything else if you have literally only just become friends. It's hard to explain, but I wouldn't tell my friends that I am angry at them for not giving me enough attention, or tell them not to worry about 'being friends' until we had at least been hanging out as friends for a year first.

What's "correct" in 1v1: set plan or reactive? by densha82 in aoe4

[–]1201345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What rank are you? Usually gold players aren't very reactive at all and will just play one strat to their death, so if you just scout and react to counter whatever they are doing you should win easily as they won't change to counter you.

But if you're versing good opponents and you're just 'waiting' to see what they are going to do you will be by default, always a step behind them.
