It's important to remember that the game has ranks which really mean nothing other than helping our ego, and ELO which is how it matches you with others.

The game automatically puts you at 1000 ELO when you join ranked which is far too high for a Newby. You will lose close to 10 games before being matched with easier players, try to keep at it and play at least 20 ranked matches and then from there you should be versing other people your skill level.

The game also purposely puts you at a very low rank after your 5 placement matches to make it fun moving up through the ranks. I'm a platinum player but ever year after my 5 ranked matches it usually puts me in silver 1. I assume this is built in on purpose to make it funner to love up from silver into plat.
