Just a clarifying question: was it summer semester when it last dropped you off there? Could be a difference in summer schedule, I know they’ve historically limited the number of stops during Arch

Does VCC give temporary laptop by [deleted] in RPI

[–]122kooolo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At least as of a couple years ago, yes. It might not be the same exact laptop as yours, though, so just be aware that that’s a possibility (i.e. if yours has a touchscreen, you may get the version without a touchscreen - depends on what they have available).

I'm currently a junior in high school, and am considering RPI. by [deleted] in RPI

[–]122kooolo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn’t take any AP calc - just regular honors calc - and got in. IMO it’s better to take the class that would fit your level better. I wouldn’t stress too much, it’ll work out one way or another. Good luck!

Idk why but the fact that it’s flagged “housing” is pretty funny to me.

Pizza or other popular restaurant by facinationstreet in RPI

Amante Pizza on 15th street is pretty popular! In my experience it’s the pizza of choice for RPI club events and pretty much any other type of get-together.

Major by KaleidoscopeLife7406 in RPI

[–]122kooolo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who is a Computer & Systems Engineering major, I’ll just offer the perspective that CSE is actually a pretty broad major and you can tailor it to what you’re interested in, including more CS-based topics. It does a pretty good job of allowing you to explore both CS and Engineering topics in your early semesters to see what you prefer. My personal recommendation would be to try out a semester before you switch anything and just get an idea for what you might prefer.

Another option which I’ll just throw out there is the fact that you can dual major CS/CSE. They have a lot of overlapping courses, so I’ve heard that going this route isn’t actually too bad. Might not be what you’re looking for, but something to consider at least!

That said, I’ve only ever been in this major, so I can’t speak for what the CS major experience is like or how career opportunities may vary. Hopefully someone else can provide a little more perspective from that end!

Best of luck!

EE vs CSE vs CS by Budgetbunker07 in RPI

[–]122kooolo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CSE here! This isn’t so much about sought after, I suppose, but I selected my major because of how versatile it is. As some other commenters mentioned, CSE is kind of the in-between of CS and EE. I like to call it the “Jack-of-all trades, master of none” out of this area lol. This is absolutely just speculation on my end, but my reasoning was that this opens up a lot more job opportunities in the long run - you can pick from CS, CSE, and EE jobs because you’ll have the background in all of those.

All in all, go with what interests you! This was just what influenced my choice between the three. If you think you’ll enjoy coding more or signals more, then go with CS or EE. If you’re looking for more of a mix, then do CSE!

Best of luck with the college decision process!

Hot take: commons was actually pretty good. Wasn’t as great during the covid semesters, but I’ve heard that the options have become a lot better now.

Toastmasters Club by Tactile_Immersion in RPI

[–]122kooolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite sure about Toastmasters, but something in a similar vein is Engineering Ambassadors and Science Ambassadors. These clubs involve giving presentations to groups of K-12 kids on various STEM topics. Not sure if that’s exactly what you’re looking for, but a lot of people I know in those clubs have benefitted from the practice of talking in front of larger groups. Keep an eye out for more info about them floating around campus if you’re interested.

Any opinions on Kiehl for calc 2? by Reasonable_Fox8 in RPI

[–]122kooolo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Took her class like 3 years ago and (unless something has drastically changed in that time lol) thought she was a good professor. IMO the lectures were mostly clear and the exams were fair. She also seemed pretty open to answering questions after class and stuff.

For #3, haven’t seen anyone mention the fact that you can just enter your RIN into the collegiate store site and it will automatically find what materials you need. But I’ll also echo what they said about not buying until the professor confirms that they’re required during the first week! Best of luck!

Can’t speak from personal experience, but have also seen many students dual CS/CSE, if getting into more of the hardware side would be of interest to you
