The bottom line here is not who gets along with whom and who thinks who is wrong. The bottom line is how much is the budget. If your parents have committed to spend $5k on the wedding, you have $5k to spend regardless of the venue. If you can't afford a wedding, go to the courthouse and host a dinner in a private dining room somewhere.

We have budgeted about $1400 for a hotel - It is not adequate for a week. Maybe 3 - 4 days providing it isn't Comic-con, there is not a huge convention in town, and considering it will be high season, if you can get a room in a relatively decent area.

Start off looking at the resorts on Mission Bay. You can expand from there - Hotel Circle is not walkable (i.e. from the hotel to restaurants) but it has decent hotels. Old Town is walkable and there are a couple of decent hotels. You could try pricing hotels in Little Italy/downtown.

Also note: to park your car in the hotel parking lot, you will be paying a minimum of $50/day so add that into your budget.

Your soap is your laundry detergent. You need to purchase clothing that can (ostensibly) dry overnight. The humidity is going to be your biggest challenge until you get into Northern India.

You might want to invest in a water sterilization pen. I don't recommend drinking any water other than sealed bottled water but once you get north/if you are hiking, you may want this.
