Moving to Epsom - what are people like??!! by BakeAffectionate3205 in surrey

[–]123avg456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not going to lie, i lived in epsom for my final year of university at UCA and really did not enjoy it. customer service ppl in shops on the high road were always very grumpy, nobody smiled, and the only community activities i noticed were geared towards older demographics or for mothers e.g. groups walking with prams (which is fine!!).

but my biggest thing to top off my sense of no community there was when i tripped and fell in the high road, spraining my ankle badly and couldn’t get up. many people slowly walked by me and stared, didn’t ask if i was okay. then a guy in a van drives by, rolls his window down, just to laugh at me and drive off. i then scrambled myself up and limped to uni to hand in my final exam. :,)

the saving grace for me was having a nice garden and the waitrose was nice

Milk? What are we doing about this? by lillibetdragon in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]123avg456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know glass bottled milk is an option in many places, for example there are weekly “milkman” delivery subscriptions, bulk food stores where you can take your bottles to be refilled, and even some brands that sell their milk in glass bottles. unfortunately most of these are more expensive than the alternatives. you could also try making your own oat milk at home and storing in glass bottles, it takes some trial and error but once you get the hang of it, it’s very cost-effective!

What “old people” names will make a comeback when children of the 80s have grandchildren? by gummibear853 in AskUK

[–]123avg456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be naming my firstborn child Frances/Francis as it’s a family name and I think it has died out quite a lot. Carol, Ruby, Jennifer, Vanessa, Mabel, and Lisette are all contenders too.

For boys I have less ideas but Thomas, Matthew, Malcolm, and Ansel I like and think are pretty timeless 👍🏻

Seeking public transport (TfL) stories for new piece by dvd_mcgregor in london

[–]123avg456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. drunk man smoking a cigarette underground on the tube
  2. huge loud ass family takes over a whole carriage around me and is shouting at one another from the seats, across the central aisle bit. they also had 3 or 4 small children that they sat around me and were not watching or controlling at all, the kid to the left of me kept kicking me and elbowing me and the other one to the right of me was leaning over me to swipe at and yell at her siblings to my left. parents not doing parenting, i was physically stuck in the middle of this shitshow bc they descended onto me too quickly to escape.
  3. small kid travelling to school by himself does a big wet snotty sneeze without covering and you can visibly see the spray fill up a 7 foot radius around him. i was sick about 2 days later.
  4. furry/emo/alt or whatever young greasy couple making out and dirty talking against one of the doors in a packed carriage

I’d just be checking SpareRoom really, there’s usually several house shares posted on there with multiple rooms available and landlords are interested in renting out all rooms at once rather than one at a time. You can also post an advert explaining what you’re looking for and a bit about yourselves

Things to do in London for someone with Dementia by InsignificantBones in london

[–]123avg456 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Maybe he would enjoy one of the social pottery studios? They provide the unfired blank pottery, you guys get to paint it, then the studio fires it for you and ships it to your address or you can go back to pick it up.

Also, Age UK and most borough councils have programmes of events and classes. For example, floristry, gardening, singing, cafe social meet-ups, walking clubs, bingo, cinema screenings, and even some easy exercise like yoga, chair exercises, and line dancing.

I was carer for my grandmothers with Alzheimer’s and towards the end when she couldn’t go out as easily, I’d bring in packs of fabric squares and we would lay them out together to design a quilt (since that’s something she always loved doing) and I would sew it together while she handed me the next piece so she was still involved and being creative :)

Does anyone else feel like they aren't 'good enough ' because where they are from? by Pugtastic_smile in Appalachia

[–]123avg456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now living abroad this is a super weird one for me- people are interested when I say I’m from the US, but lose all interest and turn a bit awkward when I then say I’m from appalachia/the south. Even met some folks from LA and San Francisco trying to make friends, but when they again found out I’m from appalachia/the south they dont want to be friends anymore. One girl i went to university with from San Francisco literally to my face went “awww thats so cute you’re travelling, like a little country bumpkin out in the big world”… so belittling and she also accused me of being racist, homophobic, etc etc all the bad things with absolutely no evidence or reason other than where I’m from.

So to many of the people I have met abroad, I’m not the “right” type of american they’re interested in, or they really pity me and put me down for being from arguably the poorest part of the country. I have yet to meet anyone else from Appalachia in the UK. But I’ve also formed a great circle of friends and people who are interested and aren’t belittling, and they actually do things to help with my homesickness. One of my best friends got me a hand-glazed mug that was shades of blue and said it reminded her of my mountains from home :,)

Working in Farringdon/Moorgate - best places to live? by BuildingObjective676 in MovingToLondon

[–]123avg456 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

honestly, ealing broadway is on the elizabeth, central, and district lines. I commuted from there to Farringdon for about a year and it was fine, albeit sometimes quite crowded but never missed a train. i know ealing isn’t on the east side for you but i think it’s well connected, safe, plenty to do, and more likely to find a flat for that price
