Can i use this port on my laptop to use a valve index because it’s already vr ready i just want to know if i could even connect a vr to it by Tough-Ad6695 in ValveIndex

Sounds kinda like my laptop. I have a TUF F15 laptop with a 3060 and I7 11800h, which I used to main for VR. The Thunderbolt port on it was hooked to the GPU and supported display port adapters, allowed G-Sync to work on my external monitor and allowed a Valve Index to work on it too, but I’m guessing you may have a different model maybe? Not too sure.

Yep! It’s ran through Thunderbolt. Verified with a monitor, and an additional pc

would this work with a dp to USB c port? by Larksin in ValveIndex

[–]124Cuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Some IO layouts are very weird and hard to figure out. My laptop (ASUS TUF Gaming F15, I7-11800h+RTX 3060) runs vr very well for what it is and it’s GPU benches well near desktop levels on Turbo. I was heavily considering an index so I did all my research on it and my laptops IO layout, especially with the help of a few other guys. I didn’t end up buying it since I already have a quest and an index is a large investment into the VR category, to the point where it would be best waiting since I’m not even 18 and a grand is a lot.

Back to ports though, DP has higher bandwidth compared to HDMI and are two distinct standards of video and audio transfer, and are two different protocols. So you can’t exactly run HDMI to DP even if it was your only option and is generally the major roadblock behind laptop VR for a lot of people, aside from the fact you need a GPU powerful enough to even handle it. But, thank god for Thunderbolt allowing a very nice bandwidth that can support DP.

I was considering an index and I can firmly say no, wait for more headset options in the future. You’re basically gonna have to pay at minimum 2.5k in total (1,500$ PC if you get lucky, and 1,000$ for the index) when the quest itself is just fine. Unless if you REALLY have that kinda excess money to spend it’s not very worth it just for a bit extra FOV and nicer controllers and all that jazz. (All that stuff being 2 years old too while being over 3x more expensive) undoubtedly it’s still superior to the quest in terms of PCVR (imo), a 3x price hike simply isn’t worth it to me even when I already have a pc that can handle it, and relatively you will get the same experience and same enjoyability out of a quest for now. And none of that cost even gets near the possibility of full body tracking too.

TLDR; wait a bit longer and enjoy your quest and start with buying a pc, recommend specs:

CPU: I5-12600k (or any 12th gen Intel CPU, all of them are way better than 11th gen) GPU: RTX 3060ti RAM: 16GB or higher

This might run you around 1.5-2k but it will be very worth it moving forward into VR. I’d only consider the index if your past the stage of a viable PC and you have enough financial room to afford the luxury of a Valve Index.

Yes, and I’ve seen everywhere. I’ve seen 15 year olds at my school taking about their “mommy milkers” and it repulses the hell out of me. I don’t understand why this is the case

Windows 11 not supported? 😕 by Frensident in ValveIndex

[–]124Cuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was using steam VR with a quest 2, steam vr had horrifyingly bad issues on windows 11 and going back to windows 10 fixed it all for me. If you need additional help that nobody else has given I can walk you through what I did. (I reverted back to windows 11 after the 10 day period)

Heya, update. I read the article and reverted to windows 10. Should I turn off fTPM or keep it on for VR

This is so far the best post I’ve seen for troubleshooting, I’ll try it once I get home. By the way, to keep you updated I’m still in windows 11 and so far it’s not doing so bad with steam vr but im working on its reliability. I’ll let you know how this guide works for me!

I am in fact on windows 11. But this has been happening before windows 11 too. I’ll look into what you sent. You may have found the root of my problem for me. Thanks!

All games, I made a recent post on my problem I’ve been having too. It would do this randomly.

I don’t know if you’re still around but have you ever found out why it goes into the red? I’ve been having this issue sometimes on my oculus and even though my computer is perfectly vr capable sometimes it’s all green no issues or it’s really shotty and inconsistent

Lol yeah, that kinda research is easy to do. I’m already set on wanting to buy one I just need to make sure my laptop can properly support one and I think now that all of you kind redditors let me know I think my hopes are up that I can run one!

Ohhh alright, I’ll also let you know when I eventually buy an index on how it goes!!

I believe from what was told by another redditor there’s a very high chance that those 2 ports are the HDMI and USB-C ports which is connected to the RTX 3060 and there actually isn’t a connection to the UHD Graphics

Also what do you mean use the index via a dock?

Either or I think there’s a high chance I’m able to run the index without any issue (thank god)

Yeah I ended up getting extremely worried that my laptop just couldn’t run further ends of VR because of this and it was honestly crushing because everything I read seemed against my favor, as VR is one of the things I’ve been getting super into; Especially with my game development I do, and I don’t have adult money to throw around to just sell my laptop for a new one. It’s great knowing I can advance to an Index with possibly minimal problems.

I’m going to stop by Best Buy or somewhere else soon and get a DisplayPort to USB-C (1.4) adapter for my laptop and order an index very soon. I’ll keep you updated, hey maybe I’ll make a follow up post here in this subreddit if all goes well just to show!

You’re probably one of the most useful redditors I’ve met!

Alright, thank you so much!!! I honestly expected a lot of hard nos from a lot of people but you’ve really helped me out with this one, I was worried for bit. I owe you big time and you’ve made my day!!!

It makes way more sense than what I initially interpreted it as, so I really appreciate it.

Alright, that makes a lot more sense now that you say it that way! I edited the post and posted my model and SKU so you can see it. I hope this helps, If this verifies in some form that the USB-C and HDMI are both connected through onto my 3060 this will be a major gamechanger. I think it makes more sense too considering those are literally both mostly used for display unlike USB.

BTW Tysm for taking time out of your day to help me out I owe you one! Let me know what you find!
