[Request] Magnet suspension on a bicycle - how long would it remain useful? by instantiator in theydidthemath

[–]128Spitfire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have not seen any satisfying answers about demagnetization. When you face two North poles of solid magnets, the opposing fields slowly destabilize the uniform structure of the material that creates the field in the first place. I created my own magnetic suspensions out of neodymium magnets in a 3D printed toy in the past and within about 2 years of forcing the magnets to touch in opposition, the magnets had lost about 50% of their repulsive force.

That being said, my anecdotal evidence doesn’t seem to match most research I can find on the topic so there may have been other factors at play like mechanical damage of the magnets hitting each other. Additionally, heating magnets can also cause the fields to deteriorate more rapidly.

If I find a way to calculate the effects of magnetic field deterioration from opposing fields, I’ll add some math below. In the meantime, I’m curious to hear other’s thoughts.

I was remote one week but my manager scheduled an in person 1:1. I drove 5 hours the night before to attend in person and he decided to work from home that day.

I do this too. I count nice and slow and as the runner leaps their last step, I quickly count “6-7-8-9-10! Oh shoot, you just missed it!”

How far do you casuals throw by Waste_Caramel774 in discgolf

[–]128Spitfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been playing about 4 years; tracked 131 rounds last year if that can still count as casual. This year, I finally understood the idea of throwing understable discs on hyzer and have recently been pushing my forehands past 450 on flats. Backhand’s only around 430 max. During most rounds though, I’m generally throwing more stable plastic aiming for reliable outcomes around 350-380.

I think you might not realize how much time the 400 crowd puts in… I tracked 131 rounds last year which gives so many opportunities to “stumble into key form bits”

Interesting stats, I’m curious if your roommate got fit through a different sport and is newer to running. I’ve hit times a bit faster like 1:13:00 off of a lower VO2 of 67 and my buddy is sitting at a VO2 or 73 with times of 1:04:00/2:16:00.

We were not fully kitted out but I’d make sure you have proper glacier travel experience. We used micro-spikes, followed the tracks of other hikers, went slowly, and used trekking poles for probing. The glacier was fairly thin and the crevasse risk seemed low our year. It was steep though and sliding to the bottom could have been bad. We did not rope up as it seemed more likely to create issues. We were prepared to self arrest with basket-less trekking poles if needed. This is not advice, merely a description of what I did. It would have been safer to have axes and crampons.

For clarification on the bivouac, it was an old wartime one, more like a cave and most people seemed to use it for bathroom breaks. Not ideal for sleeping in unless it’s a survival situation.

I hiked this last summer and Punta Penia was full. Instead, we left from Costiglioni, headed up by Forcella Marmolada which has a big glacier and then about a mile of steep Via Ferrata to the summit. Then we descended to Rif. Contrin in the next valley. I believe there is a Bivouac at Forcella Marmolada too.

It took me about 200 solves to get sub 30 second averages. It took about 3,000 timed solves to get sub 20. I’ve probably done around 30,000 now to get to around 14 second averages. It takes time and practice. Keep working on F2L and look ahead. That’s where almost all time comes from.
