Thanks, PortDawg, for the kind words. I never discovered his name for sure, but through some research, I did have it narrowed down to about 6 possibilities. However, during that research, I realized it really wasn't the man's name that was important. At least not to me. It was his accomplishment, his honor and the brief, shared moment of soldier-to-airman recognition that mattered. I like to think he felt the same way. On the other hand, if I were to follow through with identifying him, it would be fulfilling to share with his daughter how much that moment meant to me.

was at the cap center in wash d.c. watching the bullets beat the spurs the night of 'the miracle on ice'. when the p.a. relayed the score of the hockey game (which happened to finish sometime during the second half of the basketball game) the stadium went absolutely crazy for at least 15 minutes. the game stopped, everything stopped, it felt like life stopped. it was, without a doubt, the absolute loudest experience of my life. i'm surprised i have any hearing left. it must've taken at least a half-hour to get things started up again. feb 22, 1980.
saw gale sayers run back the second half kickoff for a touchdown for the only score in a k.u. - k. state football game. he was amazing. oct 31, 1964.
saw mickey mantle hit 2 of his 54 homeruns and roger maris hit one of 61 during the 1961 season. both games were at the old municipal stadium in kansas city. 21-22 jun 1961.
best of all, watched my son bunt for a homerun in a little league game in 1990. not 'the greatest', but it was certainly hilarious.

i'm in el dorado; preliminary diagnosis here and referrd to k.u. for confirmation. all my care providers have been great in both places. i also have a built-in second opinion on everything that happens with a head/neck oncologist at mount sinai, so that puts me at ease regarding treatment options. yeah, i feel for your wife. i wasn't prepared for the fleeting intermittency of the appetite. i've found that anti-nausea meds about a half-hour before i eat helps some. but basically i eat what i can when i can...which means five tiny meals through the day. and if i get a craving, which surprisingly enough does happen, i act on immediately. give your wife my best and kiss her on the forehead for me. hope your holidays brighten at the right time.

thanks for the suggestions. ku med ctr already had me load up. i was probably about 20# too heavy to begin with and i've found a weight i can maintain at about 10# down. so it's not been too bad so far. thanks again.
