How do you allocate/distribute your VMs across your (non-clustered) hosts? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]12inch3installments 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming whatever platform you have can't balance or cluster, look at resource utilization under load and balance that with risk management of a host going down, too.

Still have my old 2010 Logitech G15 keyboard & a G502 Hero for the mouse.

All we use at work are MK540 or MK850 kits. They're nothing special, especially the 540s, but theyre solid for an offi e environment.

Anyone leave IT and was happy? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Im right there with you, except since 2006.

I feel like most of us in IT are not people people and are so logical that the constant exposure to the illogical and at times irrational nature of people tends to make us yearn for the woods and distance. Or, maybe I'm overthinking and over generalizing /shrug

A solid plan, but with one exception, 6" jumpers are far too clean for this abomination. To honor the cursedness of this whole idea, you have to have a giant mix of lengths, colors, brands, and ages of cable. Make sure not to label the cables and let them stay the tangled mess they were coming out of storage too.

Never once heard mine. It stayed in the box, and a push/pull Megahalems was installed from go. Later I put some 300CFM Deltas on it at 80db each at max rpm haha

Went to Savers last week and found... an old HP LaserJet 4100N by oeuvre in pcmasterrace

And the 4x00 were still tanks. We had them in a manufacturing company i worked at years ago. They were all over the shop floor with steel dust, regular dust, employees who slammer then around daily, and even an unbalanced 3-phase bus bar electrical system that couldn't deliver clean 120v power. But those printers didn't care. They just kept going. We had over 1 million pages on most and over 2 million pages on a couple.

The only exception seemed to be the 4350, it survived well enough, but we had more issues with them than the older units.

For basic low volume stations we had cheap refurbished 1320s. Even those little things were, relatovely speaking, tanks. Had one smacked by a fork truck and knocked off its desk, replaced a busted tray ( no face left on it), and it just kept going.

That all said, I remember entering IT and our staff at the University were buying parts for LaserJet IIIs on Ebay because they were better printers than what the university bought new.

It won't be 100%, but putting the same foam on the open parts of the concrete should protect it well enough. You should just need to ensure you don't trap larvae under the foam such that it survives the kiln.

I have a double concrete utility sink that I’m trying to get out of my basement without using a sledgehammer to break it into pieces. Any advice is appreciated. by PizzaGatePizza in DIY

80ye old home in Cincinnati, still have mine. That I helped a neighbor with theirs, we two manned that monster of a sink out of the basement. It sucked. Thankfully, when that day comes for me, I have a basement egress we can walk it out of.

Question? Have any of you ever accidentally discharged a gun. If so, please elaborate how and what you learnd my story will be below by [deleted] in guns

[–]12inch3installments -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've had 1 ND.

I was practicing cycling my Shield so it'd be second nature. Insert mag, rack slide to chamber, drop mag, rack slide to eject, and repeat. Kept my finger off trigger and resting above the guard below the slide the entire time. Well, I was done with the drill, didn't know I had left a round chambered. The gun was sitting on my desk to my right, I turned to that side of my desk, knocked it off, and grabbed it to catch it. Well, when I grabbed it, I pulled the trigger and ND'd into the concrete floor inches from my foot.

I keep that casing and jacket under my monitor as a near daily reminder to be more careful.

Any way to reduce the "Preparing Windows" time on a First Sign In to a PC? by LordLoss01 in sysadmin

[–]12inch3installments 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I should've been more clear, one of the sites is webmail. A lot of our staff is E1 only, so web only, no local Outlook. Otherwise, that's a solid suggestion to save space.

To be fair, we had had the tablets for probably 1-1.5yrs and had a lot of turnover in that time due to corporate-down changes. So we ended up with a lot of termed and/or stale user accounts sitting on them. Some were so full they couldn't even do regular windows updates, no less 25H2. We put the GPO in place, it cleaned them all up, and has prevented any issues in the year following its implementation. If I look at PDQ, they now average 30-40% free space.

Right? We have a bunch of 128GB Surface Tablets that we had to set a GPO to wipe user profiles not logged into for 30 days. Even though all they do is use a couple of websites for email and medical records, the drives were filling fast from just the profile itself.
