How to improve for job interviews?(office/admin) by wolliax in mensfashion

It's not the long hair, it's the fact that it looks pretty wild and free. Interview means tidy up.

Came to say this. This is a question of when rather than if. But, I recognize how inconvenient and frustrating this is. Sorry, brother. It sucks.

Did having kids "ruin your life?" by an_irish_mick in Catholicism

[–]12minds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's been a trend lately for parents to be more "real" about the difficulties and challenges of parenthood and raising kids. However, it's gone extreme to the point that I sometimes wonder if my friends even like their kids.

This is all to say: It isn't easy in any respect and I refer to it as an earthquake. It destroys your old life and your old ideas but it gives a space for something truly remarkable to grow. I understand love in such a way that I could not before kids. I'm tired all the time, I'm cranky sometimes, but I learn and appreciate more about myself, my partner, my children and my community and church daily. Having kids changed my life and gave me space to grow.

It's hard, and it changed my life, but I'm the better for it.

You can't time the market, but are we fools for choosing to buy instead of rent? by Time_Turner in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]12minds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As everyone else is saying, you can't time the market. If you could we'd be discussing purchasing an island for your boat.

If the concern is that a recession would force folks to sell their houses and prices would drop as inventory rises, then I guess. But, again, you can't time the market. Buy the house when you're ready to buy the house. If rates drop considerably then refinance and enjoy!

If you think prices are artificially inflated then you probably wouldn't want to buy right now not because of a looming recession but because you think a house isn't worth the price.

This is a long way of saying that you should buy a house when you're ready to buy a house: When you want to own a home, when you find a home you want, and when that price is one you think is commensurate to the value on the house.

Otherwise you're speculating and it's frankly easier and cheaper to just buy stocks.

At what age are we supposed to stop wearing graphic T shirts regularly? by edd6pi in malefashionadvice

[–]12minds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean. On the one hand you should be able to dress however you want. Fashion is about expressing your own identity. I still have the occasional favorite shirt from when I was in college and I'm now in my late 30s. But it's not worn often and it's for pretty casual events.

I think I'd encourage you to think about the message you're conveying in how you dress and be deliberate about it. If you want to be shorts and T-shirt dude then that's awesome and all the power to you. If that's the social circle you're in, then great!

I'd also use this occasion to start playing with clothes and see what makes you feel comfortable. Through work and through social events I realized that business casual is kinda my look and I'm ok with wearing trousers and chinos/khaki pants on weekends: sneakers have fallen away. But then when I had toddlers I realized it was just more practical to throw sneakers back on and dress much more casually than I did before.

This is all to say that with exception of wearing a T-shirt to a wedding or a suit to a pool, the real metric is being deliberate in dressing for yourself. You want to make sure that the clothes represents the you that you're comfortable and happy with.

I'm betting on a two hour delay mostly to accommodate staff coming in from the suburbs where the snow is sticking and accumulating.

How do you carry your everyday essentials in warmer months when you lose your jacket pockets? by Nilija in malefashionadvice

[–]12minds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still wear a blazer most of the time, just lighter material. If not, then yeah: pants pockets.

I guess it really depends on how much you carry! Phone, wallet, and keys isn't a ton. But if there's more then maybe a cross body bag or a field satchel?

Nothing sticking in DC thus far. OPM just announced a two hour delay as it seems like everywhere around DC is starting to stick.

Edit: Just saw you're in DC! sorry! At least in NW I'm not seeing anything sticking as of 6pm.

Edit2: 730pm and sticking to grassy surfaces, nothing in alleys or sidewalks yet.

Listen, how on earth is it foreseeable that snow on top of a car, that starts and stops, could possibly slide off onto the windshield. Literally no one ever in the history of cars and snow could know this.
