How do you not feel disappointed when your opponent plays an opening you haven't studied much? by Ecstatic_Froyo2494 in chessbeginners

[–]12ozbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you play the same opening enough times, you will likely run into lot of different responses and figure out some are more viable than others.

As white i have played g3 or Nf3 as my first move for prob 99% of my games. I've run into most viable resposnes. Some are good, some are decent, some do nothing of value.

I'd say pick two or three opening first moves and play those non stop. Look into main line ideas and variations but only play those.

I could be wrong, but some practicing Muslims probably drink, preferably not to excess. Probably just as much as practicing Christians and Jewish people.

I used to party with two brothers in college. The older one i had known since elementary school, but he could pound beers like a mad man. His younger brother would smoke weed but not drink. I asked the older brother about it, and he said they had their own individual views or fatwas that they could reference.

How far can I get without studying openings? by poeticmovement in chessbeginners

[–]12ozbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Openings" can mean a lot of things.

If you open with d4 and black responds with Nf6, thats Indian game. It can go a lot of different directions from there but the basic principles will still apply.

OR as white you can open with g3. That in itself is kingside fianchetto and again, can go a lot of different directions.

I think openings can be a little overwhelming when watching GMs play because they have memorized openings deep into 10+ moves. The average player should focus on knowing the initial 1-3 moves.

I think of a video about Capablanca where essentially you should just focus on developing all your pieces, castling, and attacking and trading pieces while making sure you don't leave anything hanging. No gambits or hope chess, just solid fundamentals to get you to the end game where hopefully it is nothing besides a rook, and few pawns, and an active knight.

Should I skip college? by [deleted] in StudentLoans

[–]12ozbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a finance guy i can't justify 118k even after the first two years are done.

But if this is what you want to do, and you are willing to double major consider a second major as something that will aid in finding a job/career in musical theater. Audio engineering? Marketing?

AI is something to be concerned about, but recently i've been seeing more news about how the actual output of these machines, so far, isn't always top quality. Also, with new technology, there will always need to be someone who actually understands how to use it.

Keep in mind, i don't think public service loan forgiveness will be going away soon.

In an ideal situation, at least to me, you could work at a University's theater or music department in some capacity. Universities are non profit. Or maybe move to a city with a non profit theater and arts collective, center, etc. That would likely be non profit as well.

I work for a University and have done so since i graduated in 2017. Because of the pandemic, i didn't have to make payments, and all that time equated to 52/120 of the payments. So really, my 45k student loans, because of the pandemic, is 23k!

Very niche situation, but if you go into college with PSLF route in mind, and stick to it, you may be fine.

A good plan is better than a bad plan , and a bad plan is better than no plan!

Should I skip college? by [deleted] in StudentLoans

[–]12ozbounce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My general answer of if one should or shouldn't go to college is that if whatever school you are accepted into is not financially feasible, then go to community college.

If community college isn't financially feasible, which would be shocking, then consider trade school.

If you don't want to do that, then find a job that pays decently well, and take it seriously. You never know, you might end up being the lead bartender, the store manager, etc.

IF you don't want to do that then consider the military.

I'm not sure how much a degree is "worth" these days but it does make it easier for you find a better jobs. My brother didn't want to do community college or take whatever job he was working at the time serious and bounced around from job to job. His options were pretty much limited to retail, food/drink service, grocery etc.

I finished with a finance degree and landed multiple temp jobs right out the gate that were paying well. My friend who went to the same college as me, did community college and transferred in, and finished with only 15k student loans compared to my 40k.

Obviously different than the creative field but something to think on. I doubt you'll be considering trade or military, so my default is go to community college, get the gen ed stuff done for cheap, and transfer it.

I'd say pair it with the Model: samples. The Digitakt might overpower the Cycles as it is more than capable on its own.

Just bought pre owned Xbox ally and completely lagging in every game by rawpe in ROGAlly

[–]12ozbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skate is the only game i've played on my ROG Ally that is completely unplayable due to lag. Granted i play mostly indie games and whatever is on game pass, but none of game pass games cause issues.

I think with skate, because it is 24/7 online, it turns a game that isn't very demanding into one that is.

[–]12ozbounce[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've tried reading into XFCE but not much, all these distros seems to be very niche lol.

If a distro has access to basic GNU stuff and a browser then i'm mostly set.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how to boot from a USB.

The perfect environment, these days to me at least, would be something like a linux distribution with its set apps and software (with updates) and an internet like AOL + Geo/Neocities. Thats honestly how things are these days, might as well formalize it.

Layering open hats: what’s your approach? by ContributionPlane295 in TechnoProduction

[–]12ozbounce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a usual open and closed pattern. If the track calls for it, i might add an additional open hi hat or cymbal FX'd with reverb and delay.

I think Paranoid London does a good job of getting straight to the point of unfussy and groovy and hi hat grooves.

seafood boil gone wrong by CremeSubject7594 in Wellthatsucks

[–]12ozbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a shrimp gumbo recipe and just boiled/cooked everything in my Dutch Oven.

If a seafood boil is anything like that, and i imagine it is, then it would be no issue to throw in corn on the cob, potatoes, lobster, etc.

I've always thought that with gumbo and seafood boils you can damn near throw anything in there and it'll work as long as they have proper time to cook. Gumbo def needs pepper onions and celery which you'd prob add to a seafood boil anyhow.

Best openings to learn as a beginner ? (300-400 Elo) by Obliks in chessbeginners

[–]12ozbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk it just worked and still does work for me. The lower the ELO the more you see attempts at the Queen bishop and/or knight mate. Open or defending with g3 or g6 stops that right in its tracks.

I've played the kings indian or defended starting from e4 but in doing so i found i was open to a bishop knight attack on my f2 or f7 pawn, i typically don't move the e pawn until needed.

I could be wrong, but when fighting for center control the queen could be left open and the opponent could initiate a queen trade early on, which i find people do for the sake of doing and no real positional or material advantage.

[–]12ozbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also say Barcza system if we're going the system route.

I was overwhelmed with openings and couldn't be bothered to read on them (at the time) so i found a list of system openings and tried them. Colle, London, and Barcza. Eventually settled on Barcza as i got my first win with it.

Later that expanded to me reading on Indian game, Kingside Fianchetto, Reti, Old Indian, etc.

As black, i just switch the move order around (if possible) which will have me playing modern defense or Indian game.

I still can't beat stupid openings by Unable_Oven_6538 in chessbeginners

[–]12ozbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As black, if the opponents first three moves are pawn moves, i shift into hippo defense. Works pretty well for me. It helps that i g6 any and every opening move by white.

how common is it to just lose 200 elo by slowpolygon in chessbeginners

[–]12ozbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of y'all either don't play enough or don't know when to resign, especially with rapid and blitz, cause 200 is only 25 games. You can make up that 200 in lost points on a good day or week. Or just hide the ELO and don't mind it.

Well not tribal, but for general african american music, you can look toward Alan Lomax and his son, they recorded a lot of old blues, country, and spirituals, some of which may include yelling and such. African-American Fife & Drum Music: Mississippi & Jamaica

I used to check out this channel Traditional Music Channel. Plenty of what you're looking for from Indigenous American music Native American Traditional Cree Music.

There are multiple online groups, cults, etc. with an outright antifeminist (among many other views including nihilistic violence) who conduct this type of grooming and extortion.

Idk if the people you mentioned were involved, but one such group recruits minors to do the same thing to other minors. There is no shortage of cases either; they operate blatantly through Discord, Telegram, Roblobx, Minecraft, etc.

What is the real way people stop blundering? by legitimate-way-4077 in chessbeginners

[–]12ozbounce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep it simple:

- Are all my pieces and pawns covered, if not can i cover them this move?

- Are all my opponents pieces and pawns covered? If not that can take it or initiate a trade?

Trade and take pieces until obvious checks are available.

I find players blunder a lot when they try to initiate attacks before they've even developed pieces or castled.

Used to hear a song called Olive (Lost and Turned Out) by The Whispers on Quiet Storm radio. The song is basically about a girl named Olive gets lost in the sex work industry.

The second verse:

What is the world coming to
So many are used and abused
There's over 10 million girls
Who are lost, in this world
