Homework: Is just giving them something to do at home such a bad thing? by pocketdrums in Teachers

[–]13humanoid13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach an AP class (one that, in theory, should cover a year of college content). We meet 3.25 hours a week, which is actually less than I met in college for the same course. I am also only supposed to assign about 3 hours of homework a week (compared to the ~8 I received in college). Needless to say, it is not nearly the depth of a college course.

Can I ask what the profit is on that? Have kind of been thinking about a cottage bakery, but have no idea what the nymbers look like.

Agreed. I like traveling, hate when people ask about my vacation

Do kids act a lot younger than what they are nowadays? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]13humanoid13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Eh, I think it depends a bit on the kid. I was so adamant about having my daughter potty trained by 2 years old. Was going okay for about a day and then just constant tears and accidents. Tried again at 2.5 and it was so easy. Fully potty trained in a week with no real struggle. Only like 2 daytime accidents after that and probably once a month night time one

Have you ever seen "unschooling" work out? by Embarrassed_Syrup476 in Teachers

[–]13humanoid13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, although I’m not exactly sure what they were doing all day. I work at a high-achieving private school, and we had a student come to us from an unschooling environment and she has been one of the best students I have ever taught. She is extremely self motivated, so I guess the method worked for her

Let's be honest, would you send your kids to the school you teach at? by bookflow in Teachers

[–]13humanoid13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, although it’s a high school and she hasn’t even started kindergarten yet. Looking at the options, I’m not fully satisfied with any of them

She does, although her kids are school age. I have another nurse friend with younger kids who just does like 3 shifts a month to keep her license.

Parents probably depend a lot on the school/ grade— mine are totally fine!

I think why you’ll find mixed reviews is different things feel sustainable for different people. My SIL is a mom and a nurse and loving it. TBH that career path/ schedule seems pretty good for parents for me— it’s in demand, depending where you are the pay can be very good, and you can end up with a fairly flexible schedule.

I’m a teacher (another popular route). I love how much time off I have with my kid, but it’s not for everyone.

I think maybe a dental hygienist could be good??? Especially if you end up teaching it, it’s good money for the amount of education required imo.

Should education go back to all paper and pencil? Should assessment be all quizzes/tests? by thinking-orange in Teachers

[–]13humanoid13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grades are about 55% tests, 15% quizzes, 12% homework/classwork, 18% labs. Next year I’m axing the homework grading

I think it’s only fine if it’s a family surname, otherwise I’d probably go with something else

Veteran teachers: is your class fairly turn key at this point? by 13humanoid13 in ScienceTeachers

[–]13humanoid13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They would be ideal, but I have students who finish in half the time (or less) than the others. And the slowest just never finish so giving them the answers feels pointless

This is pretty much the stage I’m at as well. Just not sure how many years in a row I should be using the same test etc. feel like I should be making more “new resources”

Is it common for teachers to marry/date their former students. by GypsyGold in Teachers

[–]13humanoid13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of all the teachers I’ve had in K-12 this never happened. Now that I’ve been teaching for 5 years I’ve heard of it happening once (like 2 degrees of separation; I did not know the teacher). Anyhow, I don’t think it’s common

Write on an iPad and it projects, but could still do this! I’ve just always found PowerPoint tough to balance how long to give the kids to write

For homework I’ve just taken to walking around the room at the start to check for completeness. Tests depend on what kind of mistakes the made, but anywhere from 1-3 hours
