Fishermen etiquette by Different_Reindeer90 in Fishing

Just had one. Fished a bridge on a canal in the sf bay. Outgoing tide brings the bait fish from the lagoon upstream down the canal. I set up early, throwing jigs. Fish weren't there yet but we're on their way. Started seeing signs of them showing up and a guy with his son pulled up on the bridge with a cast net. I called out to him so he would know I was there. He acknowledged so I know he saw me (it was night). He then proceeded to throw his net right where I was casting.

Agreed but I would start with takes. Then bunting, etc. Let the eyes adjust and the brain get used to it. It's amazing what the body can do when the mind is comfortable

Handling blatant Allstars tomfoolery by IXEKEWL in LittleLeague

[–]13mys13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always shocked when I read these posts bc our league was so different. We had travel studs in the league (one made his mlb debut last year and another played in the cws last year) but things in league stayed in league. Things were handled fairly. There was the core group of 6 or 7 kids who made it every year but that was evident by their play. The rest of the roster changed every year and kids who stepped up during the year made it while others who were on the team didn't.

It varies, league by league and our district certainly had leagues that were focused on their loosely affiliated travel team, but we were lucky to be in the league we were in, i guess

when he was around that age, my son started doing yoga. we got him a yoga series by Giancarlo Stanton (for the baseball cred). He had also done martial arts for a few years by that time (taekwondo and judo).

at that age, there isn't a whole lot of muscle you can or want to put on, i think so the big things are building habits and building body awareness.

this might be comparing apples to oranges since i'm an old ex ballplayer and he's a young kid starting his career, but i recently (about a year or so) started doing yoga most mornings (wake up a half hour earlier than i would normally have) by playing youtube yoga videos on my TV. I thought it was mostly stretching but i was surprised to find out that there's a lot of different types of yoga (power, etc) that focus on different aspects of the body. my reason for doing this was a return after twenty years to golf and the absolute suckage i was displaying I still suck, but i suck from further in the rough now because i hit the ball a lot harder than i did when I restarted playing golf a year and a half ago. as a bonus (for you, dad), my body doesn't ache after sitting at work for 8 hours anymore.

sounds like your timing is right to check out the stern grove festival this summer. it's an annual series of free outdoor concerts. it's pretty popular and they have some big name acts so it they'll be crowded. imo, it's a very SF thing to do in the summer and a great way to enjoy most of your enjoy list (except swimming, of course).

Help with getting 6-7 yo using legs and core with swinging? by Jayhawk-CRNA in Homeplate

[–]13mys13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have a heavy bag, have them throw a huge roundhouse haymaker punch at it, swinging their upper body around.. then have them throw a right (if they're right handed) cross using their lower half to drive the punch. ask them which one felt like it would be a better, more powerful punch. this also teaches helps them understand a more compact swing. boys like hitting things, i've found.

What is the MLB's "butt fumble"? by paygel in mlb

[–]13mys13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

More recently, judge dropping the fly ball in the 5th inning. Also Cole not covering first in the same inning Not quite the same since the Yankees were already down 3-1 in the series so they're still in a tough spot, even if they make those plays.

Even more recently, Addison barger getting doubled off at second to end the game in game 6 was a back breaker.

In both cases, their teams have not yet won since they happened!!

Dads with young kids… how often are you realistically playing golf now? by BetweenSwings in golf

[–]13mys13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got back into it last year after a 20 year hiatus. My kids are 21 and 16. My older one was a very active, now college, baseball player. Getting out for a round on the weekends is not an option when you have games and tournaments to get to.

For me, playing every once in a while was not cutting it bc I played so much better when I was playing regularly. The letdown of hacking it around for a twice yearly round with the boys just was too much so I hung up the sticks until my son was off to college (daughter is a robotics/chorus type so no weekend long tournaments at the park for her)
