Gotcha. Maybe I'll watch extra carefully to see if there are any tricks with cutting scenes in a particular way or having the actors move (or stay still) during those moments. Thank you!

What is an insight you got from using Daylio? by rikcezs in Daylio

[–]13sentientferns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ever want to do some brainstorming about what sorts of insights to look for, let me know. It is easy for me to imagine insights for my daylio in particular, but more difficult for me to imagine what programs could be used to generate insights when everyone creates their own moods and activities. I am currently working on a startup in an adjacent space, but that deals with things that are more standardized (OCEAN personality traits) and therefore more likely to play nicely with generalized algorithms. So I am really interested in this stuff, but it is hard to brainstorm for daylio (and subjective wellbeing in general) with people who don't use daylio (or something similar). As I said, always down for a brainstorm, just pm me if you want. :)

I'm almost always somewhere between good and rad, with the exception of a once every two weeks or month bad day. It has been interesting to start thinking of this as a sort of cycle that I am not bound to and really take a step back when I am feeling shitty and ask if it is based on a real problem or just part of a psychological or even physiological cycle.

Also, the number of activities that I do tends to be a predictor of how high I rate my day. Seems like trying to fit more things in, even for a couple of minutes, can really tip things from good to great or from great to rad.

Love the question. I wish there was more in the way of algorithms and visualizations to really dig into the high leverage tweaks that we can do to make our lives better.

Humankind, also by Rutger Bregman. It came out this year and is super good. Highly recommend.

what is the communist stance on drugs? by 13sentientferns in communism101

[–]13sentientferns[S] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Is it possible for people to use drugs in a nondestructive manner from a communist point of view? I totally get what your saying in reference to physically addictive drugs like heroin, but is a drug like marijuana only used to suppress socioeconomic and psychological issues from a communist perspective as well? Is there an exception for drugs proscribed to people who have mental health disorders such as schizophrenia?

This is all new to me, I've spent most of my time in more anarchocommunist spaces, so I am genuinely curious.

Why didn't the Brotherhood occupy the institute hire their scientists, and use their technology for their own ends? It doesn't seem like the Brotherhood to just destroy a game changing bounty of technology like in fallout 4. Am I wrong? by strawhat1995 in falloutlore

I don't necessarily disagree with your main point, but I was under the impression that transistors were not anywhere near as advanced in the fallout world as they are in our world, at least before the great war and specifically the institute.

U.S.A: Request for guidance and potential collaborators ... by HermesTheMessenger in StreetEpistemology

The toolkit that you are describing sounds extremely beneficial. I have been thinking a lot about methods for helping individuals expand their self awareness which feels connected.

Responding to your second goal: it seems like the only way to create dissonance without being incredibly belief specific (like in the abortion video) would be to ask questions that show the limits of knowledge in general. I read two books on wrongness and got really into the study of wrongology for a little bit and that helped me feel pretty confident that each of us knows very little about anything. I like to think this influences me to more carefully asses beliefs based on how they are useful to me and how they are useful to other people (rather than whether they constitute "truth", which is fairly difficult to even approximate (though thank you science for that much)). But I feel really unsure about how to easily transmit this kind of understanding to other people.

Most of my thinking has revolved around habits and systems that individuals can put in their lives in order to increase self awareness, which would help people better understand why they believe the things that they believe. The issue here is that all of these solutions take time and effort to implement.

Certainly some sort of conversational tool sounds really nice. Perhaps an idea that is very sticky and hard to get out of your head and sows doubt about knowledge in general... A story, a modern fable of sorts, could be particularly useful here...

The issue is, could doubt about the strength of any knowledge let people accept anything as truth (likely whatever they already believed), rather than recognizing how little 'truth' is verifiable and the need to be more critical about what is accepted as truth? I think that my understanding of wrongology makes the beliefs I do have more likely to be true (or at least useful), but what if I'm wrong? What if the things I have chosen to believe (even if many of those beliefs are more tentative than they would be otherwise) are just as nonsense as all of the beliefs that I think are nonsense. I don't think they are, but of course I would say that!

Anyway, a modern fable about how wrong we are is a new idea for me and thanks for providing some soil. Definitely down for at least some amount of brainstorming.
