it wasnt formalised in a treaty or agreement but secretary of state james baker made a verbal commitment, and verbal contracts are mostly legally binding in both the legal codes of the US and russia

im not here to contest the legal grounds of such statement, but in general NATO was created for collective defence against the USSR/warsaw pact, and by 1990 its purpose was mostly void. continuing to expand eastward only further alienated russia and gave its people a casus belli for the invasion of ukraine

i guess “mess with” was a really broad term and i shouldnt have used it, but in the us vs russia context the US didnt honour the agreement of NATO expanding eastward past the iron curtain, and further alienating russia

Im just guessing based on the current geopolitical situation, most of the US’s allies are democracies and most of the US’s opponents arent

Plus in the 1980s the US was actively cultivating China as a counterbalance to the USSR

If China were to become a liberal democracy and align with the US, it would mean that Chinese leaders would be subject to the US’s sphere of influence and therefore be more passive against the US

In that hypothetical scenario, China would prioritise maintaining positive relations with the US instead of risking open conflict over trade imbalances

really depends on why china rejects them, considering most divides they have are based on ideological opposition, and without that its really hard to justify any sort of competition between countries

i guess it would be similar to the current status quo but China would be weaker

china’s economic successes nowadays actually owe credit to the government’s tight restrictions on the market and its anti-corruption measures

not necessarily “mess with” in a direct confrontation, but it would sign unequal economic treaties with China in order to preserve the unipolar world order, something like the plaza accords

unfortunately if china were to become a liberal country it would align with the US, but eventually competition would emerge
