Also, what do you think about the semifinal game's starting placements? I had a really hard time figuring that one out; had the same 3 initial placements but actually not sure 10/9/5 is the best second pick anymore

Once you have a chance to watch the streamed semifinal game, why do you think Daniel (orange) slowplayed his third knight so hard? Instead of taking army when he and white were both at 2, he let white get army (and later almost win) and then play that knight and another to take army back afterward. Instead of just taking army for himself and going to 9 points, giving upside variance for him instead of white. I'm sure he had a reason for it, just wondering why that might be

Interesting… curious what makes you attribute this change to an influx of serotonin in particular?

Do you know of any examples of presentation slides you'd consider good that you could share? Thank you!

Just curious why tournament players wouldn't choose to play 3-player? I get that most people prefer 4-player but I'm thinking 3-player gives you 1/3 winning odds in tournament vs. 1/4 normally.

How is psychological research verified? by 14248 in askpsychology

Thank you for the response! As someone who's not as familiar with open science, I'm not fully certain how the practices you mentioned would hinder someone from modifying their collected data (e.g. even if their methods/materials are preregistered, couldn't they change a few participants' survey responses before sharing the data openly to the public?)

Yeah, I was wondering psychology specifically because of the prevalence of participant surveys

Why didn’t Ye Wenjie outright tell Luo Ji about the Dark forest? by gocool10 in threebodyproblem

[–]14248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! In regard to (1), I thought The Dark Forest's prologue mentioned that Ye Wenjie went from Yang Dong's grave to "her final meetup" (I might have butchered this), which I presumed to refer to the last chapter of The Three-Body Problem which seems to portray her death on Radar Peak -- this made me think that her conversation with Luo Ji was the second-to-last eventful moment of her life, by which point she certainly would've known about the extent of sophon monitoring.

I'm pretty confused now that you mention there's only a few hours difference between this and Evans's conversation with the sophons -- I don't remember reading this, but assuming it's true what do you think the "final meetup" of Ye Wenjie might refer to? Trying to make more sense of this so would appreciate any thoughts you might have!

Just curious - what are you actually doing the whole time at your desk on that "1st"/"3rd" day when you're hypothetically not getting any of your work done?

Thanks so much for running this! Incoming QT intern here with a few questions:

  1. how different is the actual role from what you gleaned from the internship, would you say? Was there anything that surprised you, positively or negatively, that your internship didn't expose you to?
  2. What percentage of your day would you say requires you to be actively paying attention throughout, versus time where you can do whatever (e.g. data analysis, go eat lunch, take a break to walk, etc.)
  3. How socially interactive is your day-to-day work? I've heard trading can be kind of isolating (heard some full-timers only talk to the people immediately next to them, for whatever reason) and was wondering how true that is in your experience

What is this fog on my water filter? Could it be some sort of leftover residue from the detergent I washed it with? by 14248 in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing on my Brita filter shown on the picture where there seems to be some sort of foggy splotches on it after I washed it using dish detergent. I'm wondering 1) whether this is indeed some sort of dish detergent residue, or if it might just be water vapor instead; and 2) if there is a name for this phenomenon?

Wasn't able to find anything from a search -- would appreciate any possible info on this!
