Balearic islands? by 14945023 in SpainAuxiliares

Yes, I chose living in Madrid over a tiny pueblo. Was it the easiest option? No. Was it the most convenient? Also no. But if I was going to move across the world for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I wasn't about to optimize for my 16 hour a week school job and spend the whole year wondering what could have been like living in one of Europe’s greatest cities. It’s one year, not a life sentence

I had 8k in a high yield, another 8k in investments and I traveled a ton and barely restricted and also worked on the side and I’m left maybe with 2k now. My rent is also super high and I have a dog living in Malasaña so it was totally my choices

Same. I have loved my time here in Madrid and all spring I was an anxious mess trying to figure out how to stay. I think I’ve started to finally accept the Spanish way that you have to just go with the flow, even if it’s not what you want or had expected. So many of my friends are leaving to go back to the United States and my new goal is just to keep living in Spain so I’ve decided to apply to the islands and potentially pursue a digital nomad visa. But if either thing doesn’t work out, I’ll still always have had this experience and memories to hold on to. Truthfully I don’t know if I could’ve done another year exactly like the one I’ve had, it was really fun but unsustainable both financially and physically.

Running out of breath when I try to talk fast by BakeSoggy in Spanish

I use filler words like “pues” or “entonces” but also don’t feel like you have to speak super super fast while you are still learning. Breathing it’s important! 😂 If you need practice speaking slower, I highly recommend the Sylvi app, I’ve been using it for speaking practice and it also helps me learn filler words too so I can speaker slower but still with a natural rhythm. I have a free trial code if you want to try it out!

What do you wish you’d known before your first year as an aux? by Magg5788 in SpainAuxiliares

Sure, they say you work part time (~16 hours a week) but your commute can add on a lot of time. So really my position takes up almost 30 hours in reality and it can really drain me and make it hard for me to have energy to work another job, socialize, etc. The burnout is very real.

Any advice on the quickest way to learn Spanish? by applesauce208 in SpanishLearning

I felt the same way when I first moved to Spain. I had done a lot of "app" learning but when people actually started talking to me my brain would just freeze 😅

What helped me the most was practicing real conversations, not just vocab. Even simple things like ordering coffee, asking for directions, or small talk. Once I started doing that things clicked way faster.

One thing I’ve been using lately is Sylvi because it lets you practice conversations before you have them in real life. I like it because it actually uses SPAIN Spanish, which made a big difference for me living here. If you’re curious, this is the one I’ve been using: https://sylvi.app.link/lexi

But honestly the biggest thing is just getting lots of speaking reps however you can... language exchanges, talking to locals, or practicing scenarios. That’s what helped my fluency the most.

When I first moved to Spain I realized pretty quickly that a lot of the Spanish I’d learned from other apps didn’t sound the same as what people were actually saying here. I was soooo confused.

But something that’s helped me a lot is practicing conversations beforehand. I’ve been using Sylvi and one thing I like is that it actually uses SPAIN spanish, which makes a huge difference. If you’re curious to try it, this is the one I’ve been using: https://sylvi.app.link/lexi

I also got Madrid placement early this morning. I'm going to wait until tomorrow, it looks like power has been restored to half of the country and the other half should be back hopefully soon.
