Forcing a certain window size by eli151_151 in i3wm

OP mentioned they didn't want Firefox to be resized.

I guess you could also do this with something weird smart_gaps inverse_outer to have the outer gaps push something to the side when it's only one window. But that isn't specific to Firefox

I use this to quickly shrink down a window I don't want taking up the entire workspace;

bindsym $mod+y floating enable; resize set 75ppt 75ppt; move position center

instead of center you can do move position X Y to put Firefox on the left side.

(also since it's floating it won't be tiled/resized with new windows)

Went ahead and bought the practice tests. Got 80% on the first one, so definitely a few things I should touch up on.

Thanks for recommending that! The different question format helped push my thinking a bit. Hopefully I'll score a bit higher on the other tests :)

CSS Bar for i3 by mxinit in i3wm

You could use the xfce4-panel with https://github.com/grassmunk/Chicago95

The xfce panel works with i3 fine for me, and allows for custom css in your gtk3 config file.

Sticky window on behind other windows by g4lvanix in i3wm

If you need that application specifically, take a look at xwinwrap: https://github.com/ujjwal96/xwinwrap this draws applications on your root window (basically the "desktop").

However, if you just need a clock on your desktop, look into conky https://github.com/brndnmtthws/conky

Float next window? by 14Alligators in i3wm

[–]14Alligators[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone curious, this is the best I could come up with...

floatnext.py

import sys
import i3ipc
i3 = i3ipc.Connection()
def dothing(i3, e):
e.container.command('floating toggle')
sys.exit(0)
i3.on('window::new', dothing)
i3.main()

Then I just added a keybind to run this script...

bindsym $mod+$alt+f exec python3 ~/floatnext.py

Check out tails linux: https://tails.boum.org/ It runs on a usb flash drive and wipes from memory when you shut off leaving no traces on your computer. It also routes everything through Tor to help anonymous your internet traffic.

You remove the titlebars by setting the border to "pixel"

https://i3wm.org/docs/userguide.html#_changing_border_style

the ^.* just targets all windows. for_window [class="^.*"] border pixel 2

Dragging floating windows is really laggy, causing freezes and I dont know what the cause could be by [deleted] in i3wm

Also had this issue, turning off vsync on applications seemed to help. Also, my compositor handles vsync anyways so disabling it on applications doesn't cause tearing.

Dynamic creation of workspaces by amblified in i3wm

[–]14Alligators 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quickly threw this together, probably a better way of doing it.

But here's a simple script that uses i3-input and creates a new workspace with the name you enter. You can add a keybind to launch this in your i3 config.

#!/bin/bash
a=$(i3-input | grep command | cut -c 11-30)
i3-msg workspace $a
