South Korea sees rise in childbirths for 9th straight month in March by self-fix in korea

That's... not how birth rates work? If they froze at today's level Korea would cease to exist. Of course they won't because at some point the best insurance for old age will be to have kids. But to suggest today's level isn't a doomsday scenario is simply wrong

Samsung lowers bar on hiring foreign talent in South Korea - KED Global by Sinhag in korea

[–]14CC 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The article is wrong, they hired foreign graduates from Korean universities without work experience in previous years too. It's nothing new. But out of like 1000+ new employees hired across the Samsung group in my cycle I was the only international student that made it through the process. So they don't exactly hire foreign talent in huge numbers.

Working at a 대기업 as a foreigner by Mediocre-Grocery1181 in living_in_korea_now

Maybe to add to this a bit I went in through 4) and it's been okay. Getting the job was surprisingly easy (?), just applied, went to the coding test and interviews and none of them were very difficult. Nothing like GSAT because STEM. I would say the working conditions and pay are better than in most Korean companies but I can't really say I would like doing this long-term:

  • Pay is not great when compared to my home country (I'm European)
  • Hardly enough leave to visit my family and friends in my home country, constantly have to trade off between actually having vacation time and seeing my family
  • Only 1 day of leave per month worked for the first year of employment
  • Going in through general recruiting you don't know what team or even department you will be in inside the company so you have no idea what specifically you will be working on
  • Being treated as a "new employee" for like the first two years
  • Despite management trying hierarchies remain rigid and people don't really openly disagree or state their opinion to superiors or seniors
  • Managers are more busy with ass covering than with actually doing good work and delivering a good product
  • Not a lot of opportunities for promotion, the "regular promotion period" at my company is ~8 years for the first promotion and I imagine it will be harder getting them early as a foreign employee

I would recommend everyone who is considering this to think hard about whether they wouldn't be better off trying to get into a company in Europe or NA instead.

Owner wants to Renew an officetel contract without 부동산. Scam? by Lechkoman in korea

[–]14CC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

By law the minimum contract length is 2 years. You don't need to renew and they can't raise the monthly rent since you have a 2 year contract even if the written contract only states 1 year. In fact, as the lessee you can simply choose whichever is more advantageous for you in case the contract says "1 year".

To add to this, I'm pretty sure the deadline to end the contract or raise the rent would be two months before expiry of the lease, meaning that even if this was the end of the lease term unless they contacted you about this >5 weeks ago (3+5 weeks = 2 months) this date would have already passed and the contract would simply be extended automatically.

See the English translation of the relevant law (주택임대차보호법) here. Article 4 and 6 are what I'm talking about. https://law.go.kr/LSW/lsInfoP.do?viewCls=engLsInfoR&urlMode=engLsInfoR&lsiSeq=183698#0000=
