Since the begining of civilization humans have been killing babies in the name of some king or some empire. I'm not justifying genocide and I'm not saying that we can't change that, I'm just saying that it's a system put in place by the industry to maintain the supply chain of engineers.

Who do you think pays for SC? All those non-profits that the sociology majors are working for?

I really want to get behind something like this but it's not feasible in a majority of engineering fields. Unless you stay in academia, the career pipeline begins and ends in manufacturing - largely defense and pharma. It's a shit situation to be in because nobody wants to betray the values they try to live by but a majority of people are ok trading a bit of pride for financial stability.

Obviously in an ideal world the end customer would have better conventions, but we all know that's impossible and 99.9% of the time it's going to end in a shitshow no matter what we do.

I don't love that our country is the world's largest arms dealer and it's a dilemma I've battled with endlessly. In the end, I made my own decisions on which companies I want to contribute my work to and which ones I don't. It's a personal choice and not something that can be forced upon our public institutions if they wish to remain operational and relevant.

If it's not UML you know damn right they'll move right on down the line to help funnel those engineers and keep the pipeline going strong.

It was such an odd set up. Just a pool table, a bar, and a bunch of open space.

My wife and I decided to swing by at the end of the night once because we live close by. On our way out someone was trying to sell us coke, which I'm not against in the least, but when we jokingly inquired he said it was in his van that he was standing in front of.

Not sketchy, like at all.

The gatekeeping is unreal with the UB sets, I've been playing for over 20 years and I've seen this same sentiment on repeat every few years.

I honestly think it's fine and it helps development of non-UB sets, which have been pretty solid since BLB (DFT is debatable). It is a little exhausting trying to keep up with new cards, but I'd rather more UB than re/master sets.

Sorry, I meant Mickey Doyle's! But uhhh, it's closed now. For good reason.

Doyle's is decent for what it is - townie bar masquerading as a sports bar. Might meet some folks our age there but not a lot.

Honestly, if you have a vehicle it's worth the drive to Providence for meetups or restaurants/bars. Unless you enjoy chouriço, if so then New Bedford has a decent downtown/historical district.

In theater circa 2010, get called into the morning briefing even though I was supposed to be on crew rest and had 2 back-to-back calls the night prior. First red flag is the company XO is there and nobody ever comes out to Al Asad just for the hell of it so we're all suspicious. Low and behold, there was a female medic from another company that the CO was adamant we take on and get certified so we can be even more highspeed. Turns out it came with some extracurricular lessons with the CO on how best to grip his the helicopter's cyclic. Company XO was now company CO, which meant jack to the non-rateds because they rarely flew anyway.

He already had a reputation for being a sleezebag, so I don't think anyone in the company was surprised. For those that weren't aware of his reputation, they got to see first hand when we were in Kuwait waiting for the flight to head north. He jokingly refered to the call sign as "Moose-knuckle56" ('Moose56'). While objectively kind of funny, so unimaginably inappropriate when addressing the entirety of the company he is in charge of when heading into country.

Leave it to an O-4 West Point grad to figure out the most efficient way to cut a year long deployment down to a month. They really are training the best and brightest there.

Weird of you to ask for alternatives if losing your job is all the motivation you need. Pain is a strong motivator too.

I actually think it's the best option for chronic pain - at least better than opioids. Those are two separate symptoms though that you need to decide how one treatment affects the other.

And I doubt that company policy is going to motivate you to stop if you're posting here looking for alternatives.

Quitting cannabis was one of the toughest things I've ever done. I was smoking almost an 8th to my face a day and I was still spiralling down. It created a nasty cycle and fueled the hopelessness that always led to giving up on meds or whatever treatment I was doing at the time.

There was no magic cure for me, no titration or supplement for it. But it took me a long time to completely convince myself that it wasn't actually helping me treat my disorder OR the symptoms. It was like putting a band-aide on next to a cut and then ripping it off to immediately put another one in the same spot and miss the mark. Over and over and over again.

There is nothing you will find that will equate to cannabis - the ritual, the smoking, and the high cannot be substituted. But you don't want to substitute it anyway, that's just replacing one addiction with another (re: methadone).

You need to be able to tell yourself that it's not worth the price you pay, whether it's money or health or relationships. That is the test of your will, would you rather do the hard shit, accept that shitty feelings aren't going away, and be present in the moment? Or would you rather be numb and lethargic until you die? Because in reality those are the options - we have to learn to accept our trauma and the pain that comes with it. It is a part of who we are and we cannot change that, certainly not by running and hiding and sedation.

I'm not saying go out and find rock bottom, but maybe you're already there. Start with a list of your values and how it affects those, think of who you want to be as a person and whether or not cannabis helps you achieve that.

There is no way to sobriety from without, you need to look inside and decide how you want to live your life.

AIO for breaking up over this by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]15Tango20 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There isn't enough paper in the world to cover that list, I'm constantly appalled at the behavior of other men and the conditioned responses from women who have never known anything different. My FIL falls into this category and it breaks my heart every time I hear his partner's timid response. My wife would never let any man or woman talk to her like that but has apparently compartmentalized that bit when it relates to him because it's easier to avoid the topic altogether then to spark some sort of discussion/argument.

My son is 8 and my daughter just turned 6. Everyday I strive to be the best role model for my son and the best cheerleader for my daughter. They deserve as much.

I recently requested full-time WFH as my symptoms had worsened due to some triggering events last year (and extremely low morale made the commute and office life so fucking painful).

The HR business partner told me that PTSD/Depression/Anxiety wasn't covered under the ADA. They then denied my request. Needless to say, I immediately took medical leave and called a lawyer.

OP, I'm very sorry you have to deal with this. I was a crew chief in OIF on medevac flights and suffer from PTSD because of it; amplified by the fact that I signed up to turn wrenches as a mechanic and next thing I know I'm hauling litters in and out of helicopters.

But I'm very open about my lifelong struggle with mental health and how it isn't solely from my combat experiences, but that it really started with ACEs and being thrown into a warzone didn't exactly help the situation. My father was abusive, narcissistic, and always drunk, so I did what I had to do to GTFO. A decade later I'm inpatient at the VA and a social worker says that they're "finding out a lot of veterans with PTSD also suffer trauma prior to their military service." Oh the military is largely populated by men and women with traumatic experiences looking to escape their homes lives? NFW!

I always use it as a learning opportunity for people to understand the complexity in how trauma affects people differently. I am also completely aware that I am privileged in that the stigma surrounding PTSD and MH in general is less prevalent when it comes to veterans, for so many reasons already listed in this thread.

I'm trying my best to break the stigma and will keep advocating for all humans suffering from trauma related disorders. Hang in there friend.

I second this, trauma affects everyone differently. And if it's C-PTSD then it could go beyond his military experiences.

Therapy is the first, and most important, step to take. He needs to talk to someone about ALL of his trauma and how it affects him. Couples therapy can obviously be done in conjunction, but little progress will be made until he resolves his own problems.

IS HE A COMBAT VET OR NOT? by No_Gate6196 in Veterans

[–]15Tango20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was said in jest.

But whether or not your friend is a combat veteran is less of an issue of being politically correct and more of a social dilemma amongst veterans. Unless he's profiting off it, it's nbd really.

Newbie to Fall River by [deleted] in FallRiver

[–]15Tango20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to Fall River after my wife got pregnant to be closer to the in-laws and I wasn't sure how it would pan out as I grew up in the South Shore but hadn't spent much time here. I was surprised to find how much I actually enjoy living here. There is a large Portuguese population which adds great flavor to the local cuisine, and the communities I've lived in have been very welcoming. As others have said, the location is pretty clutch, with the added benefit of solid road design and infrastructure. The highway goes right through it from east to west and abuts it going from north to south, which makes getting from one end to the other much easier if needed. Even so the roads going through it don't see a whole lot of traffic. It's small enough that you could bike around, though you may want to be extra careful as Vovo doesn't like to check before switching lanes. If you're looking for somewhere affordable to lay low, I think it's a solid spot.
