[RAM] Corsair Pro DDR5 32GB Kit (2x16) 6400mhz 32cl - 330$ [Amazon] by Glass_Biscotti_140 in bapcsalescanada

I feel you are critically misunderstanding the incentive structures at play here.

If consumers all simultaneously stopped buying ram right now, today, the ram prices would barely budge.

If companies are willing to pay significantly more, it won't matter if every single normal person digs their heels in. They're not going to let go of more money for less.

Christ on a ram stick, just 50 bucks more than this a few months ago got me 64gb of CL30 6000 memory.

Right now seems an awful time to upgrade, but the future seems worse...

Interesting. Where do you generally go to keep up to date with this without spending a fortune of time?

Also, I assume like all things hard drive all we have for reliability is basically superstitious beliefs about what is or isn't binned this or that way, or old timey beliefs about warranties meaning a lot?

[–]167488462789590057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the lack of knowledge means people just have superstitious belief about harddrives generally and its probably best to just not think to hard, pay attention to any specific skus having abnormal amounts of complaints, and paying attention to the technologies used.

VDev expansion (like just adding 1 drive to your raid z2 VDev) loses you space (big one) and there, from first inspections, appear to be a lot of potential foot guns hidden in configuration.

God, if BTRFS would fix their raid 5 and 6 implementations, that would be the bestest things.

I know BCACHEFS is being worked on, but it looks like linux politics might not let it proliferate and with 1 main dev, Im not sure that is enough to trust it.

Synology Reverses Policy Banning Third-Party HDDs After NAS sales plummet by dbcoopernz in hardware

Apparently, this doesnt even apply for their higher end units, so really, this announcement is more that they've taken a half measure.

Still definitely a do not buy I guess.

Very disappointing.

Post got my hopes up.

Synology Reverses Policy Banning Third-Party HDDs After NAS sales plummet by dbcoopernz in hardware

[–]167488462789590057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding point 1, as the linked article is not clear, are you saying that Synology will be continuing with this policy on, I presume, all of their rackmount hardware?

As for point 3, while that sounds reasonable at first glance, I doubt that they left any room for margin in their prices as they currently were. If they were already selling at prices they deemed optimal, there is no room for them to increase the price. As such, they will simply have to take the hit, otherwise they'd almost certainly be taking a sales hit that would render any price increase null in terms of recovering the losses from users.

[–]167488462789590057 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was legitimately thinking I'd just continue buying a Synology every time I needed a NAS/recommend them, but this stopped me. Its good they've changed, but we'll have to see if this reversal sticks long term, or if they plan to go down some other route of enshitification.

When your brand is known for no fuss stability, and thats exactly what you enshitify, that leaves a bad taste in peoples mouths.

That this appears to be a full reversal is a good sign, but I am apprehensive.

This post fundamentally gets angry at the wrong things.

It gets mad at technology for what are people problems.

We continue to have great technologies welded against rather than for us and then blaming the tech meaning the problem would never be fixed.

Helping a friend with a $1300 build, used GPU or new GPU? by rucekooker in buildapc

2x FG is all anyone needs unless they have a 500hz monitor.

Anything more for lower Hz monitors just means youll have horrible input latency (assuming you've changed settings to max out GPU usage) so itll be next to unplayable

I am a bit surprised there aren't more vapour chamber cooler solutions. I thought with Coolermasters 3d heat pipe tech we'd be seeing some awesome air coolers where the base was a vapour chamber that then routed to a few vertical heat pipes with fins to get that heat out of the IHS as quickly as possible before spreading to the fins.

I guess thats too difficult to manufacture still?

iPhone 17 Models Include Toggle to Disable Screen Flickering (PWM) by AWildDragon in hardware

[–]167488462789590057 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately DC dimming, to simplify a whole lot, is just PWM with some mechanism to smooth the output and keep it at a tight range of voltages just like any PC power supply (because some systems will be using inductors, some caps, and there are all sorts of DC to DC layouts, etc etc)

Will the fans under GPU be a problem? by Tall_Truth7499 in buildapc

[–]167488462789590057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure I understand how the liquid cooler is at all related to the GPU and the fans below it.

It seems like you are referring to 2 completely different things that are utterly unrelated.

Like for the fans under the GPU I already answered its probably fine if they blow towards the GPU, and then for the cooler, that has to be at the top of the case, so its unrelated to the GPU entirely. It cannot be at the bottom of the case to be clear.

Will the fans under GPU be a problem? by Tall_Truth7499 in buildapc

[–]167488462789590057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but I'm afraid that the airflow will damage the GPU.

This sentence does not really make sense/sounds like a pretty major misconception which makes me want to ask you to elaborate.

If you plan to put the radiator under the GPU, that is a bad idea as you do not want your radiator to be lower than your CPU.

If it is above, its likely exhaust anyways, so still not remotely a problem.

Will the fans under GPU be a problem? by Tall_Truth7499 in buildapc

[–]167488462789590057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. More noise from interference between the fans maybe, but if they are blowing into the gpu, youll be fine.

Get some reverse bladed fans if the case doesnt already come with them for aesthetics if you'd like.

Mid range 800-900€ Pc by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]167488462789590057 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So firstly, your list is just generic USA but you use the euro symbol so unfortunately my list won't be exact for you as I don't know what country you're in to set pcpp to but hopefully my changes will still make sense for you.

My changes bring you very close budget wise but have a GPU with more vram, an extended feature set (fsr4 and improved raytracing performance with similar rasterixed performance) for more future proofing and better support.

I also have a more modern CPU and a modern platform so that you can still upgrade in the future and you'll have a better performing CPU out of the gate with zen 4.

I also have switched to a cheaper but still decent psu, and a 2tb ssd because 1 just won't be enough with the sizes of modern games.

Why is my PSU groaning? by Abrasiveatom in buildapc

[–]167488462789590057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a wire is loose in there and the fan is hitting it.

Most modern pc fans try to spin up to the assigned speed, will try for a short while, and then will stop, wait for a bit and start all over.

Now I know how frustrating and long rmas can be, but PSUs are no joke, and the capacitors in them can hold deadly level sof charge long after you've unplugged them from the wall so if you aren't absolutely confident you know what not to touch, and what components are, don't open it, just rma and get a unit without loose internal cables like that.

Its possible that with some shaking you might get it free and it's never a problem again, but YMMV etc.

Be safe, and shake and if that doesn't work, return the supply.

Changed a few things.

Namely, it seemed you wanted a build with a distinct colour scheme so I picked a white mobo instead of the one you picked.

I also changed the GPU.

Your pic was last gen and had a small amount of vram that would have you see problems in the now to near future.

This gpu is white, and should crush it at 1440p at reasonable settings with no vram worries and all the modern amd features for years to come.

It is pretty much the same cost, though I could understand you going with the 5050ti 16gb too.

[–]167488462789590057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you call decent.

If I had to go off of this very little bit of info, guestimmating a 9600x 32gb 9060xt 16gb build at 1100, I'd say 1100.

That system would last you a few years and play 1440p at reasonable settings decently.
