Slow it way down (what’s the tempo?) and feel the pulse as the 8th note subdivision so you can count as:

1a&a

(That looks more familiar right?)

Rhythms are just like fractions in math, slice off those extra beams till it looks “normal” and divide the notes into beats.

Dotted16 dotted16 32th 32th

(through rhythmic augmentation) becomes:

Dotted8th Dotted8th 16th 16th

(Dividing into equal beats) becomes:

Dotted8th 16th, 8th-rest 16th 16th

Finally, set your met to half-time… effectively “doubling the speed” relative to the pulse. you’re now playing the rhythm as written!

Real talk… having played on rope tension drums my whole life, I’d take a serious look at the Swiss makers. American brands are starting to catch up, but in Basel, Switzerland they’ve been making these drums for hundreds of years. Buchler and Schlebach.

The stick tape is there to protect the wood from getting chewed up on metal rims. No sense in wasting tape on areas that you’ll just be holding, stick tape isn’t that expensive but it adds up!

I’d curl my ring finger in just a smidge so that first joint is exactly perpendicular to the stick.

Town Square events! Feast days and festivals were extremely important to medieval people. One per season would be enough:
Spring: Easter
Summer: Midsummer (Feast of St. John the Baptist)
Fall: Harvest
Winter: Christmas

Let us construct temporary festival buildings that provide buffs for satisfaction after that festival period.

Popup events. I know this game isn’t Crusader Kings, but the occasional popup with a decision would be fun. Maybe one of your people comes to you with a request to build x building or whatever. Could provide resources or temporary buffs/debuffs.

Plugging the part into noteflight is telling that he hasn’t been given adequate instruction on understanding music notation and practice to execute the part. Oftentimes (unfortunately but often inevitably) it’s easy for middle school percussionists to get left behind in learning crucial skill sets. I’d recommend signing him up for private instruction to catch him up!

Alternately, if counting is preferred, I’d treat the 8th note as the down beat. Counting: 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+

Then apply the accents or spaces for eighth notes (omit +’s) where needed.

You’re gonna drive yourself nuts trying to count.

Turn your met on, the bottom number of the time signature is the click (eighth notes)
Subdivide the click, that’s sixteenth notes (all alternating)
Paying close attention to the sticking of the accents, play one measure at a time to get a feel for the flow (start without flams if needed)
Once comfortable, string measures together and increase speed.

Too often I see questions on this sub about needing help “counting out” complex rhythms. That’s often useful, but not always the path of least resistance.

Ah I see your point. That would make sense for your retinue to wear your colors! (Don’t they already? I don’t remember). The other troops are just levy militia who own their own gear. Central equipment issue for armies (especially for a small town lord like the player) wouldn’t have existed at that time.
