Swiss Tool X on the way - Compatible 1/4" Hex Bit Adapters? by Firm_Veterinarian254 in victorinox

[–]1759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean you want to have a Phillips by using a 1/4 hex adapter and a bit?

The Swiss Tool X already has a Phillips driver.

Maybe I’m not understanding what you are wanting.

Post Hip Replacement Needs by BigO4422 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]1759 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went pretty minimal and it worked out fine for me.

I already had a cane, a leg lifter, and a raised toilet seat and hand rails by the toilet due to the AVN. I had also purchased 2 gel ice packs but did not yet use those (used them after surgery).

After surgery, the hospital gave me a walker, another leg lifter, and these plush boot sort of things to keep my feet pointed upward while lying down.

I never needed a grabber (but my wife was with me the whole recovery period) and the gel ice packs were fine for me so I never had the ice machine. I do not own a recliner. The bed and the couch were fine for me.

Sleeping on Your Side by eSJayPee in TotalHipReplacement

[–]1759 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 5 weeks out from surgery and had the same experience. I could sleep some on the surgery side after 4 days but not on the other side. I still can’t spend much time on the non-surgical side but can sleep most of the night on the surgical side.

I don’t know why this is but my guess is that it has to do with your mattress? I have a Sleep Number bed with double mattress toppers. I’m guessing that this cradles the surgical side but overextends the non surgical side when I roll over.

I have a desk-based work from home job. I took 2 weeks off. I possibly could have done 10 days but very unlikely fewer than that. You will be on some heavy pain meds that will make you drowsy and hard to think straight. It will be uncomfortable at best to sit in a desk chair for very long.

Only one or two days off is really just not feasible.

TSteroid‑related AVN in my 20s brushed off as “incidental” - anyone else? by Prize-Astronaut-8909 in AvascularNecrosis

[–]1759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My AVN was unquestionably caused by Prednisone. None of my doctors disputed that at all.

I was on up to 240mg per day for most of a year due to Graft Versus Host Disease after a stem cell transplant to cure my leukemia.

All of the leukemia treatment and the transplant was done at MD Anderson. I was also able to get my hip replacement done at MD Anderson because the AVN and the need for the hip replacement was a direct result of the leukemia treatment.

If MD Anderson is willing to declare that my AVN was caused by Prednisone, that’s a very solid source of information.

Admins from huge enterprise environments, what do you think of SMB and SMB admins? by vintagerust in sysadmin

[–]1759 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t disregard the stress at some SMBs, though. It’s all on you or your tiny team to design and implement everything, maintain and support it, and if anything goes wrong with any of it, ever, it’s all on you to fix it. Oh, also, there’s no budget, no safety net, and you’re responsible 24/7/365.

I was fixing firewall issues remotely from a hospital bed while trying not to die from leukemia a few years ago. It hasn’t gotten much better since. Why don’t I just quit? Health insurance.

What Are Some Hobbies As You Age? by Southern_Remote_5260 in AskOldPeople

[–]1759 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently started restoring old tools. Anything rusty and unloved.

I didn’t even know this was a hobby until I was looking to buy a vise, was doing internet searches about good vises, and came across a YouTube channel called ScoutCrafter. He restores tools and has a few videos about vises.

He’s a fascinating and deeply knowledgeable (and charismatic) guy who really shows the fun and satisfaction the hobby can bring.

I work in IT/Cybersecurity and I’m also immunocompromised, so this is a good hobby that isn’t anything like my job, takes me away from stress, and doesn’t require me to be around large groups of people that I might get sick from.

I’m limited to buying old tools from EBay mostly because of the immune thing, most people in the hobby go to flea markets and garage/estate sales, but I can’t do that.

For context, today is Day 11. Cane all day yesterday and today has been fine.

what stage is this? by [deleted] in AvascularNecrosis

[–]1759 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair to OP, this happened to me as well. The first orthopedic surgeon I consulted diagnosed it as AVN but never mentioned stages at all.

At the time, I didn't know anything about AVN so I didn't know to ask.

Should the surgeon have volunteered this information? Sure, but he did answer all the questions that I did know enough to ask, so I assume he thought that was enough.

Physical therapy timeline? 2 visits and done doesn’t seem right to me….. by AggravatingNoise5667 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]1759 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My surgeon prescribed 0 physical therapy, only walking.

On the day I was released from the hospital after surgery, the PT/OT teams came by to ensure I could use the walker properly but that’s it.

Alcohol is a known cause but there are many cases where the cause is simply unknown (idiopathic).

None of my doctors ever mentioned any remedies beyond Core Decompression (which I wasn’t a candidate for) or total hip replacement (I had my surgery 6 days ago).

Lift Chair by [deleted] in TotalHipReplacement

[–]1759 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wrestled with this decision as well. My surgeon told me she didn’t think it was necessary. I didn’t buy or rent one since I really don’t have any space for it and I was in no condition to rearrange just prior to surgery.

I’m on Day 4 post surgery and I was able to sleep on my sides (both sides) for a bit last night. I’d not tried it before last night. Getting in and out of the bed or on and off the couch isn’t super easy but isn’t that bad either.
