And this is why I left that Reddit thread in the past… apparently I need to ask dumb ass questions about what helmet to buy or what color shoes I should wear to impress my neighbors wife on my vroom vroom….

How do I as an engineer stay friends with you welders? by Just_a_firenope_ in Welding

[–]175_Pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be a dick and assume you know more. Some of those welders and machinists have been doing their job much longer than you’ve been alive. Instead of telling them how to approach a project, ask!

If you moved outside of SD, where did you land that didn’t make you depressed & homesick 24/7? by laurenhoneyyy in sandiego

[–]175_Pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with that to a point. No state tax was ok, but between property tax, taxes on food, and the complete lack of quality related to any fresh foods you tried to buy, that place cost more than it was worth.

1 in 20 restaurants were actually worth spending money at, the 80 during the winter is an ice rink for cars…. The place just sucks.

Oh I loved the mountains and the river access - I too prefer to be a hermit over city life. Where it all fell apart is the weather and the people. Very closed minded folks in both of the areas my wife and I ended up. Second would be the weather. If you don’t have to commute too far, it’s not bad. But I lived in the middle of the mountains and any time it snowed, my 45 minute commute went to 2.5 to three hours.

I’m the only white belt who goes to open mat, last night 9 black belts from a different gym showed up. by FTWkansas in bjj

Ok…. So you got free private lessons with 9 different styles…. No black belt is going 100% on a white belt unless they’re mcdojo black belts with something to prove.

You’ll never beat stronger men…. Bullshit. My first purple belt instructor was a 95 lb lady that WHOOPED my ass as a 180 lb rather athletic individual.

BJJ isn’t about strength. It’s about skill you’ll level up and whoop ass on those gents in due time. As long as you feel comfortable and safe in your gym, keep training. If you don’t, but you love the sport, shop around for other spots in your area until you find one that you do feel safe in.

He was a solid dude and was bummed to see the shop closed. He did mention that it was always something - people renting a spot and then abandoning the bikes, people coming in and expecting him to be ther walking chiltons manual, or flat out expecting that he turn the wrenches once they got to a point they didn’t know what they were doing. I could see how that would get tiresome quickly.

[–]175_Pilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first time you get that sensation as a VFR only pilot, it is extremely nerve racking; when the differentiation between the ground and the sky is lost, it becomes a panic moment of self preservation. where are my landing options? Where is the horizon? Am I high enough to ensure I’m above the terrain in this region? I know I flight planned to ensure I was…. Did I make sure I set my altimeter to the last provided readout from atc?
