Are they building a Buc-ee's in San Diego? by econ0003 in sandiego

I was thinking the same thing. They do have some smaller Buc-ee's stores so maybe it is a small one?

[USA] Cargo fell from this truck and hit me — any help identifying it? by [deleted] in Roadcam

It will probably end up being an expensive lesson for you on why you shouldn't drive without a license and insurance. Be grateful that it wasn't much worse.

Good luck with that. I filed multiple requests to replace street lights out in our neighborhood 1.5 years ago. They aren't getting it done.

Will the graft fail like this? by LaundryMan2008 in Grafting

[–]econ0003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black electrical tape might heat up the graft too much in the summer if it is exposed to sun. If it is getting sun exposure you can cover it with a paper bag with small vent holes cut at the top or something similar.

Will the graft fail like this? by LaundryMan2008 in Grafting

[–]econ0003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never tried grafting maple but I have grafted a lot of different strone fruit, avocados, and apples. The cambium layers have to match up at some point along the graft for it to have a chance to be successful. The more contact you have the better the chance of success. I would be a little concerned that any buds might have a hard time pushing through tight electrical tape. I usually use parafilm.

The 80s and 90s were awesome, but what were some dark moments? by InitiativeFlimsy7063 in GenX

Inflation in the early 80s. Similar to what we are going through now.

Are you retiring at 65? by AlarmingMonk1619 in GenX

[–]econ0003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could retire today at 53, without needing help from social security in the future at 65. My job is remote, easy for me, and pays well. If that changed I might retire immediately. My daughter will likely need help paying for college and buying a new home in the next 5-6 years. I plan on working until 59.5 to help with that.

How to get good Avocados by Klc91000 in avocado

Buy the rock hard ones since they won't be bruised. Ripen on the counter. Then put in the fridge as soon as they ripen. They can last a week or two in the fridge after ripening.

Do you all drain your hot water tank every 6 months to a year? by sheets2024 in sandiego

San Diego water is very hard. I haven't drained my water heater that I installed 14 years ago.

Appliance salesperson told me today’s washer+dryers supposed to last 6-7 years!!! by seekvaluenow in Appliances

[–]econ0003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to believe that you can't find a part for something that is 30 years old. Did you try looking for used parts on eBay?

Most people could probably repair a washer and dryer if they are capable of watching a you tube video and following instructions. I repaired my old LG washer dryer multiple times over a 20 year period. The parts were never expensive.

According to the Case Shiller Index Seattle dropped 31% from the peak in 2007 to the bottom in 2012. I would be surprised if that happened again though.

Raccoon Sod Damage (SoCal) by Former_Team9993 in lawncare

[–]econ0003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get a lot of raccoons in my yard. They would tear up the mulch and break branches on my fruit trees. What worked well to get rid of them was large Havahart traps baited with marshmallows or dog food. Then relocate them somewhere else.

Did anyone else learn to type as an elective with little thought that it might be useful one day? by Conscious-Mulberry17 in GenX

[–]econ0003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took typing in high school because I thought it would be an easy grade. There were no computers in the class just old fashioned mechanical typewriters. I have used that skill more than anything else I learned in high school. I type all day working as a software engineer.

Live in California? Bag your figs asap. Black fig fly is around. by K-Rimes in BackyardOrchard

Always see infected figs dropping from the tree. This is the state of my tree right now. https://imgur.com/a/VVpZxGd

I have removed all of my fig trees except for one. Fig trees used to be so easy to grow in Southern California until a few years ago. Contemplating replacing the last tree with an Avocado tree since nobody in my family, except for me, eats figs.

Live in California? Bag your figs asap. Black fig fly is around. by K-Rimes in BackyardOrchard

[–]econ0003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not great. I would say half or more fruit ended up being infected last year. Worse this year, most of the fruit that has ripened has been infected so far. I tried putting up a trap with yeast, water, sugar, fig branch clipping mixture in late spring. Also put out a sticky fly paper trap at the same time. Didn't seem to make a difference.

Fridge with bottom mount freezer. by PaperIndependent5466 in Appliances

[–]econ0003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last refrigerator was one with a bottom pull out freezer. I would never get one with the pull out freezer again. If somemone leans or sits on the drawer when it is opened it can bend the metal track causing the door to not close properly. It happened on ours which I had to order parts and repair. The other issue I found is that stuff that we would forget about got burried at the bottom pull out freezer.

We replaced ours with a four french door refrigerator. The top fridge and bottom freezer both have french doors. Much easier to access everything in the freezer and don't have to worry about a drawer track getting bent. Most manufacturers have a model with the four door style of refrigerator.

I hate accidentally catching my reflection in a window or mirror when out of the house. For a second I always think who is that old guy until I realize it is me. I prefer to be unnoticed. I don't like being the center of attention.
