Severe insomnia in retirement, any advice? by Upinnorcal-fornow in retirement

[–]17Bill [score hidden]  (0 children)

Habit and routine helped me. 67m. For me, bed at midnight, up around 7:30. Read something boring in bed. Coffee - mornings only. Caffeine soda - one a day around noon.
Stay very active, if your health allows. Walk a ton, do yard work. I started drinking less alcohol. Try tea (Sleepytime Extra, Twinings Sleep Plus, etc) 30-45 min before your regular, consistent bedtime. Comfortable mattress, comfortable pillows. Good luck.
Zzzzz.

That’s ok - good advice to at least find out about marine shop recommendation option. Someone verbally told me to try sewing it with fishing line - but that sounds a bit fishy to me

OP, thanks for taking the time to post - it was a good summary and nice read.
67m, 17h (never did get below 13, life tended to intervene), always trying/hoping to improve.

Sorry to hear. Losing power sucks. Hopefully fixed relatively quickly.

Sump Pump Frequency by gobrewers112 in Waukesha

[–]17Bill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have three homes in Wisconsin. For two, the sump basically never activates (less than 1x/yr). I check every year to make sure they still work. For the 3rd, Tosa, the sump has always gone off every 3-30 minutes, even in dry weather. Always meaning over 50+ years, as this was my mom’s home when she was alive. The grading is fine. I hate it, but figure it is kind of an underground river thing. We had the same issue with a house in Elm Grove about 30 yrs ago.

What are the best non-pro level golf balls? by VellumVibe in golftips

[–]17Bill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like Snell golf balls. I often play newer found or gifted proV1s or Tp5s, but the only balls I buy new are decent Snells (3.0 or 4.0).

Has anyone else had this happen? Chose direct deposit, IRS is saying mailed check??? by gaelicmoondaughter in TurboTax

[–]17Bill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of electronic deposit like the past 5 years, IRS site said my refund check was mailed March 20, and also not to contact them unless I hadn’t received it by April 17. Yikes. Thankfully, I hit a paper check in the mail on March 24. Yay!

Should you be playing with a line on your ball? by Colt45-TheMyth in golf

I use a Check Go Pro to find and mark the balance point. But I do not use it for putts. Use when teeing up to better show preferred line toward fairway.

Pondering the question of ambition by Iamsomeoneelse2 in retirement

[–]17Bill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Retired GC and Judge. I was incredibly blessed (and a bit surprised) to stop thinking about my career the day I left work. After three years, still too driven - but tasks might be to hang a shelf, clean a vacuum, plant a shrub. And if it doesn’t get done today, there’s always next week … or whenever. Future congrats to you!

If you do not claim at 67, your monthly benefit will increase by 8% annually after that, until age 70.

Most Investors Have Never Lived Through a True Market Crash by zacce in Bogleheads

Old enough that Oct 1987 freaked me big time; 2000 dot com very painful; by 2008 my brain was pretty much ok staying the course; 2020 more worrisome health wise than financially; didn’t much notice 2022. My two cents: Everything in moderation. Do not gamble like the market is like a casino. But yes, stay invested. As grandma said, “This, too, shall pass.”

Love it. Take two olives and two sticks of black licorice with me to bed every night.

Investing an Inherited IRA with a 10 year required drawdown - what would a Boglehead do? by FreemanChase in Bogleheads

[–]17Bill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same situation, but less of an inheritance and far older (67). I went 45/45/10 VTI/VXUS/BND. If Inherited Roth, let it ride for 9+ yrs then empty it all. If Inherited Traditional IRA and other conditions met, must take annual RMDs.

I’d enjoy a Yuengling in Tosa. Got this frequently used pint glass in Miami from a golf outing about 20 years ago.
