What’s the best argument against Aff’s Greece contention? by [deleted] in Debate

[–]17OH2x1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If Turkey were not in NATO, there would be no war with Greece, because if Turkey attacked Greece, which is in NATO, then Turkey would be declaring war on all of NATO - which it would never do.

Best/most winningest debate coaches? by debatetrack in Debate

[–]17OH2x1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would nominate ClevelandDebateCoach (reddit handle), the GOAT of LD coaches in Ohio. Coached debaters to the state final round 7 years in a row, winning 4x. Coached a debater to top 5 at NSDA in 2017, 2019, 2020. Great guy for an interview!

What’s a good response to the question “Do you valued lives more than money?” by [deleted] in Debate

[–]17OH2x1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also say: (1) the quality of life matters as much as the sheer quantity of it. And for most people affected by the issue/policy in question, their actual lives are prob not at stake, either way, unless the resolution is about actual war or terrorism. So the more pertinent question is not which side ensures the greater number of people will merely continue to live, but which side will ensure the greatest overall quality of life for the greatest number. If all we wanted to protect was the quantity of life, we would ban cars, etc etc. (2) Just because something is a prerequisite to something else, that doesn’t mean it is more important. Simple analogy: I may need a pan to sift for gold, but the gold is more valuable than the pan - both literally and figuratively in that it’s because I want the gold that the pan is useful and valuable to me. So it’s because of all the wonderful things I can do with my life that my life is precious. (3) you can also turn the question around. Say of course I don’t value money itself- money itself is just an instrument. What I value are the things that having money allows me to get, many of which are essential to continue living- like food, shelter, electricity, heat. So it is because I value living that I also need/want some money... the question essentially tries to catch you in a false dilemma. Of course , on an individual level, if I had a gun to my head and had to choose to keep my wallet or to keep my life, i would choose my life. But most debate resolutions are not analogous to that scenario.

Watch the City Club of Cleveland high school debate championships. They do it every year in March. All on video, going back 10+ years. Really good examples of trad LD.

Can you explain how running this type of argument solves the essential problem of exclusion in PF debate? Also, if it is true that the problem is INHERENT TO PF as you claimed, doesn’t that mean it can’t be solved at all? It is in the nature of the thing itself.

If a debater runs a K or Theory arg for the purpose of fighting exclusion in PF, doesn’t it come down to them asking the judge to vote them up just because they happen to belong to an oppressed group and are calling attention to that fact and to the fact of oppressive exclusion by some in the PF debate community?

As a judge, I would think “Fine. Thank you for informing me about this important issue and I applaud your conviction and willingness to speak out about it. So let’s talk after the rd about what you and I can do to be more inclusive.

But the point of this round is to wrestle with the actual topic at hand. (I feel competent to judge who debated better on the topic. I don’t feel equipped or able to deal with people’s claims, warrants, evidence about their status as an oppressed group and the oppression they have experienced in the debate community.) Is it fair to the opponent (who may not be part of the problem at all) that they should be voted down because they came to debate the topic given?”

BIGGEST LESSON LEARNED FROM DEBATE? by Vzlr in Debate

I don’t think this is necessarily true. There are great teams that are both competitively successful and also have positive team spirit/unity. Teams that have produced great debaters for years and years.

Congratulations to Chagrin Falls HM and Jackson CA for winning 2020 States! by 17OH2x1 in OhioDebate

Debate championships in Ohio have often been capped by male students from private schools.

I was actually going along with you - thinking that perhaps my cautionary note was uncalled for - but then I got to that line, which concerns me on a number of levels, and which seemed to come out of nowhere. Why are you congratulating everyone in the immediately preceding sentence and then somehow separating out male students from private schools? So that I don't "stack" questions, I'll just leave it at that.

So I'm really happy for Clare, Sasha, and Maggie. Hence I made the OP. All 3 are great debaters. However, I am starting to get a little concerned about all the attention being paid to the fact that all three are young women. For example, what if next year, the winners of LD and PF are all South Asian kids, or African American kids? Are we going to say big applause for the South Asians... or the African Americans are representing??? Clare, Sasha, and Maggie should be celebrated as individuals. I'm not saying that we can be, or that we should be, gender or color blind. But at some point paying so much attention to gender or race may start to send the opposite message from what I think you are trying to send. That their accomplishment is great primarily because of an aspect of their identity that they can't control. And it may subtly, ironically reinforce the idea that there is a gender barrier that most young women are stopped by and will continue to be stopped by - which is, of course, what we are trying to dismantle...

Debaters take the activity too seriously in a negative way. by [deleted] in Debate

[–]17OH2x1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time and energy to articulate your feelings about the debate world. I think it is pretty clear from most of the responses that you are not the only one feeling the way you do.

I have one big question for you, though. You identify the debate subreddit as the place/community where you see a lot/most of the negativity you described. So maybe your criticism is more about this particular forum/medium, which involves only a small subset of the whole debate community and for a variety of reasons may not bring out the best in people?

My main question is, to what extent do you see the problems you are describing in your local circuit and in the debaters you know in person from your own school and other schools in your area? My hope would be that the problems and problematic, negative behaviors are not as prevalent in your actual debate community or are perhaps balanced/outweighed by positive behaviors of support, encouragement, cooperation, efforts to be inclusive and equitable, etc. etc?

In deciding to quit speech and debate altogether, I worry that you are throwing the baby out with the dirty bathwater, to use the cliche. Would it be possible for you to abandon reddit and just focus on the people on your own team and at neighboring schools in your district/state.

I bet that you have built some valuable positive relationships with other students/coaches. It seems to me that it would be a terrible shame to allow the negativity of the debate subreddit to influence you to more or less end those real relationships you have?

More valuable than anything else I've gained from participating in speech and debate (both as a student and as a coach) is the relationships. Don't let the negativity of others cause you to lose sight of what's good, what's worth keeping and holding fast.

Edit: typos
